DESCRIPTION

Conveniently located in the center of the state, the Stevens Point area is a recreationalist playground in the heart of central Wisconsin. Fish the diverse rivers of the Wisconsin River and the backwaters, including the 6,830–acre Lake DuBay, a hotbed for walleyes, northern pike, muskies and bass. Paddle the backwaters and sloughs, trout streams and smaller lakes for more variety. On land, leisurely follow one of many great trails. Explore 26-miles of the Green Circle Trail, hike at Standing Rocks County Park, bike the limestone-covered Tomorrow River State Trail or discover hidden trails within Schmeeckle Reserve. The fun continues indoors by exploring the Central Wisconsin Craft Collective, with four breweries, two wineries and a distillery. Explore more local flavor by walking through local farmers markets and eating in local restaurants. Plan your trip today at StevensPointArea.com.

The Stevens Point area offers many great places to launch a canoe or kayak. Whether you’re looking for flat and calm waters or the challenge of some rolling rapids, you’ll find it around the Stevens Point area. Families and beginning paddlers should check out Lake Joanis in Stevens Point, a picturesque paddling route that features flat routes and easy access.

Intermediate paddlers can find more of a challenge on the Upper Plover River in Stevens Point, a route that features generally flat water with some rocky stretches. The Tomorrow River in Amherst offers another good option. This route meanders through woods and fields and passes the historic Rising Star Mill.

Paddlers with advanced skills should consider Mill Creek in Linwood. Get out on the river in the spring, when the water is high. Rapids on the route offer a challenge for skilled paddlers.

COMMUNITYRESOURCES

StevensPointArea.com | 715-344-2556 47

ToWn oF PLoVeRThe Town of Plover is a great place to live, offering peaceful surroundings just minutes from shopping, dining and other businesses. The town has a rich agricultural tradition and is home to some of the state’s largest vegetable farms.

AMheRSTOn the banks of the Tomorrow River, you’ll find the Village of Amherst, a quiet but thriving community with a very strong sense of place. Amherst is home to the Tomorrow River State Trail, Lettie W. Jensen Community Center and Central Waters Brewing Company.

oTheR GeMSThe countryside is dotted with small communities like Junction City, Almond, Rosholt, Nelsonville, Park Ridge, Whiting and Amherst Junction. The rural Lake DuBay area in northwestern Portage County offers many recreational opportunities and encompasses most of the townships of Eau Pleine, Hull and Dewey.

STeVenS PoinTWhen Stevens Point was founded in 1858, this was a community of loggers, fur traders and brewers. The community is still known for its outstanding beer and so much more: companies such as Delta Dental, Sentry Insurance, Travel Guard and Herrschners all call this place home. The University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point is one of the community’s treasures. The 400-acre campus includes Schmeeckle Reserve, the Wisconsin Conservation Hall of Fame, the Museum of Natural History, the Carlsten Art Gallery and the Allen F. Blocher Planetarium.

PLoVeRJust south of Stevens Point on the east shore of the Wisconsin River is the Village of Plover. This charming community is conveniently located at the crossroads of I-39 and Hwy. 51, and is home to a variety of retailers and businesses, including O’so Brewing Company and Great Northern Distilling. The village also has many great parks and the Korean War Memorial of Wisconsin at Lake Pacawa.

Fun facts The Stevens Point Brewery, founded in 1857, provided beer to Union troops during the American Civil War.

Stevens Point was historically part of the Menominee Nation. It was ceded to the United States in an 1836 treaty.

UW-Stevens Point’s nickname is the Pointers. The school’s mascot: a dog named Stevie.

The first Portage County Fair was held in 1869. Today the county has two fairs: one in Amherst in July; a second in Rosholt on Labor Day weekend.

Every spring, people flock to the Buena Vista Wildlife Area to see the mating rituals of the prairie chicken–a threatened native species.

There’s a disappearing race track in Portage County. The Winter thunder Club races cars on an oval track on Lake DuBay– until the ice melts.
