Since the outbreak of Covid-19 last March,

life and business have been challenging

for many people, especially Cameron

Croucher, the managing director of

Equine International Airfreight.

So far he’s endured five rounds of

mandatory two-week hotel quarantine, which

equates to 70 days of solitary confinement, just

to keep his business running and help ensure

the steady flow of thoroughbreds that are

imported and exported annually could continue

unabated.

“It's been terrible. It’s been pretty tough

and it's got harder and harder to move staff

around with the complexities of quarantine.”

said Croucher.

Last year, all international airline

transport for horses was grounded for three months from April through until

June.

Since such travel resumed last July, Croucher has been lobbying the

Federal and NSW State Government to ease restrictions on staff, namely

grooms, required to travel horses on cargo planes.

“What I have been lobbying for is to have grooms classified as airline crew.

“This has been successful

with the airlines and border

force but completely ignored by

the state health departments.

“Crew on passenger planes

are allowed to go home and self

isolate for 14 days until their

next trip out of the country.

That type of crew is allowed

to go home but we are not, it

makes no sense and it’s very

frustrating, as they are on cargo

planes with zero passengers.”

Inconsistent classification

of staff has added to Croucher’s

frustration.

“Returning grooms to Australia has border force classify us as

repositioning off-duty crew but NSW Health don't and classify us as a

returning traveller,” he continues.

“They consider us to be a much higher risk than cabin crew but how

can we possibly be? It's totally incorrect and misunderstood by people

making the decisions in the health department.”

Correspondence to relevant authorities written by Croucher

and Thoroughbred Breeders Australia (TBA) has so far fallen on

deaf ears.

Cameron Croucher has found innovative ways to cook for himself while in hotel quarantine

WHAT I HAVE BEEN LOBBYING FOR IS TO HAVE GROOMS CLASSIFIED AS AIRLINE CREW. THIS HAS BEEN SUCCESSFUL WITH THE AIRLINES AND BORDER FORCE BUT COMPLETELY IGNORED BY THE STATE HEALTH DEPARTMENTS- CAMERON CROUCHER

“TBA got involved and sent a letter off

and I have written to ministers but it all seems to be put in the too-hard

basket for a lot of them,” he said.

Croucher is hoping that by having staff vaccinated against Covid-19 that

they might not have to continue meeting such strict quarantine protocols.

“For the remainder of 2021, we are in process of having staff

vaccinated, which may allow home isolation to be reintroduced for them.

I'm not confident but I'm hoping that it will be a step in the right direction

and then more people will put their hand up and be prepared to do flights.”

Air travel for horses is in high demand and the past 12 months have

been busy for Equine International Airfreight.

In that time the company

has won the Macau Jockey Club

account servicing all their horse

air transport needs and has

two charters of horses booked

to travel to the Gold Coast for

the upcoming Magic Millions

National Broodmare, Weanling,

and Yearling sales this month.

After a tough year spending

much of it in quarantine and

undergoing countless tests for

the virus, which are far from pleasant, Croucher says he had to learn to

become enormously resourceful to survive the rigors.

“The important thing is to have a routine. I got up at the normal time

I would for work and exercise for an hour which is good for your mind,”

he said.

“I ran three and a half kilometres a day from the window to the door of

the hotel room and all up did 500 laps and that filled in some time.

“I ordered in groceries often because food in quarantine is pretty

ordinary and you plan what you are going to prepare and cook. That was

quite enjoyable to come up with different ideas with limited resources to

cook and make food.

“You are not allowed to have a microwave and the only appliances I

had were a hotel iron, kettle and hairdryer and I made use of those things

for heating and reheating. Doing that was much more appealing than

having to eat what was left at the door in a brown paper bag.”

Excessive periods spent in quarantine have also impinged hugely on

his family and personal life and he has been forced to miss numerous

important milestones such as birthdays and weddings.

So, not surprisingly, Croucher is loath to travel too much over the

coming months but he says until such time as restrictions on staff are

eased he doesn't have any choice.

“I will do it if it means a flight can go ahead because I don't want to let

clients down and I need to keep horses moving,” he said.

Ilovethiscity to stand for $8,800Randwick Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner

Ilovethiscity (Magic Albert) will stand the 2021

breeding season at Noor Elaine Farm for a fee

of $8,800 (inc. GST), double his $4,400 fee last

season. Sire of 2018 Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr

1, 1400m) winner El Dorado Dreaming, who

was bought by Tom Magnier for $1.35 million

at last week’s Inglis Chairman Sale, Ilovethiscity

served 124 mares last season. Chapel City,

winner of last year’s RA Lee Stakes (Gr 3,

1600m), is the stallion’s other winner at Group

level.

Change of plan for RubisakiThe Patrick Payne-trained Rubisaki (Rubick)

will have another run in South Australia before

heading to Queensland, with the Proud Miss

Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) next on the agenda for

the four-year-old mare, who finished third in

the Robert Sangster Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at

Morphettville earlier this month. "We decided

to do that to keep her against the mares, and it

looks a good option for her," managing owner

Joe O'Neill told Racing.com. "From there she

will head to Brisbane and head to the Dane

Ripper Stakes and then onto the Tatts Tiara.

The Group 1 for her up there is the mares race.

She will be well and truly in that." Rubisaki had

a track gallop at Bendigo yesterday to prime

her for the Proud Miss Stakes, with O’Neill

describing her as going “very well”.

Glenfiddich set to returnGroup 2-winning colt Glenfiddich (Fastnet

Rock) is set to return in the spring as he

continues to recover from a tendon injury.

The Peter Moody-trained three-year-old,

who has twice placed in Group 1 company,

has been out of action since finishing down

the field in last year’s Coolmore Stud Stakes

(Gr 1, 1200m) and was being earmarked for

an early retirement from the racetrack before

connections had a rethink. "Everything is

going very well. You can't actually even tell

he's had the bowed tendon," Ian Smith, stud

manager of part-owner Edinburgh Park, told

Racing.com. "All going well, he is just starting

his second lot of exercise … and he's got to

have three rounds of that. All going well he

should be back October/November. He's a

very well-behaved horse. When you have

tendon injuries with stallions, they tend to

get a bit heavy and out of control. But this

guy has got a good head on him, he hasn't

got too heavy, he hasn't got away from us.

We are very happy to keep him as an entire.

We are very confident we can get him back and

winning races."

Hezashocka joins new stable ahead of Queensland DerbyKiwi Group 2 winner Hezashocka (Shocking)

will land in Queensland today ahead of joining

the Mick Price and Michael Kent jr stable.

Trained by Shaun and Emma Clotworthy in New

Zealand, Hezashocka landed the Trelawney

Stud Stakes (Gr 2, 2100m) as a $76 outsider on

his last start, earning a shot at the Queensland

Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) at Eagle Farm on May 29.

"He lands at Eagle Farm on Wednesday for the

Derby," Price told Racing.com. "He looks a

lovely horse. He looks a clean-winded type of

gelding. I don't know him well, but the plan is

to run him straight into the Derby, which will be

fine. I will be up there shortly to get to know him

and have a look at him."

Queensland on the cards for Quick ThinkerQuick Thinker (So You Think) could be set for

a brief Queensland campaign after trialling

successfully over 1030 metres at Rosehill

yesterday morning. Winner of the Chairman’s

Quality (Gr 2, 2600m) on April 10, the Murray

Baker and Andrew Forsman-trained four-year-

old had been on a path to the Sydney Cup (Gr 1,

3200m) before suffering a minor high suspensory

strain which ruled him out of the Group 1. “It was

nothing major, but it was enough to not push on to

the Sydney Cup, where he could have aggravated

it further,” Forsman said. On Quick Thinker’s

trial yesterday, he added: “I thought it was good

for him over 1030 metres. A little bit of give in

the ground helped him be competitive, but over

that distance, that is about as good as we could

have hoped for. The race we have in the back of

our mind is The Q22 on June 12. There is a race

the week before that we might use as a lead-up.”

Zoustar filly bolts upThe Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained

Bright Flight (Zoustar) lit up the Rosehill trials

yesterday morning, winning her 900-metre

heat by eight and a quarter lengths. The two-

year-old filly, who was purchased for $600,000

from last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast

Yearling Sale, left her rivals for dead after

entering the home straight, with Beirut Miss

(Al Maher) finished second, a head in front of

Cape Breton (Vancouver). Bright Flight is out

of Listed winner Gliding (Flying Spur), who is a

half-sister to multiple Group 1 winner Eremein

(Timber Country). The Bjorn Baker-trained

Malkovich (Choisir) was another to impress

at the trials, winning by ten lengths over 900

metres. The three-year-old colt has four wins

from nine competitive starts.

Expensive purchase Montenegro wins trialMontenegro (I Am Invincible), a $1.4 million purchase by Coolmore from

last year’s Inglis Easter Yearling Sale, landed his first trial yesterday over 900

metres at Randwick. Ridden by James McDonald, the Chris Waller-trained

colt defeated Miss Worthington (Maurice) by a long neck, with stablemate

Tuhinga (Epaulette) two and a quarter lengths behind the winner in third.

Montenegro is out of VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) winner

Twilight Royale (Testa Rossa).

Clarken has mixed feelings over Beau RossaThe Will Clarken-trained Beau Rossa (Unencumbered) will line up in

The Goodwood (Gr 1, 1200m) on Saturday and Clarken admitted he

was slightly disappointed by the three-year-old’s work yesterday. "I was

happy enough. I thought he could have been a touch stronger late,"

Clarken told Racing.com. “But I'm pretty critical of that stuff knowing we

are going for our big race of the carnival. Also, he has been up for a while,

so we will have a look. Todd (Pannell) was really happy, but I was a tiny

little bit disappointed."

Prophet’s Thumb gets another Group 1 shotProphet's Thumb (I Am Invincible) will get one last shot at Group 1 glory

when she contests The Goodwood on Saturday, after connections changed

their minds on retiring the five-year-old mare following an unplaced

run in the Robert Sangster Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) on May 1. The Anthony

and Sam Freedman-trained mare already has a Group 2 win to her name

but connections are hoping to go one better. "If she was Group 1-placed

or a Group 1 winner last start, she wouldn't be here," Brad Taylor, racing

manager for the Freedman team, said. "We didn't have to run here but she

came through her last race so well, we thought it was worthwhile to have

another throw at the stumps before she is retired. There is no harm in giving

her one more run. She's in really good order and if she can get a bit more luck

on Saturday, it may be her chance to feature in a Group 1."

Kavanagh seeking his second Cup with Sikandarabad Eight-year-old Sikandarabad (Dr Fong) will look to give trainer Sam

Kavanagh his second win in the Scone Cup (Listed, 1600m) on Friday,

after he took the 2015 contest with Tales Of Grimm (Distorted Humor).

Sikandarabad has not won since landing the Coffs Harbour Cup (1600m)

in August last year but has subsequently been placed in stakes company.

However, he finished a disappointing seventh in the Hawkesbury Cup

(Gr 3, 1600m) last start. "We went to Hawkesbury thinking he was a

great chance. I sort of regret running him now, the track was too firm

and he didn't like it," Kavanagh said. "He seems to have come through

it pretty well, he worked this (Tuesday) morning on the course proper

at Muswellbrook and we were pretty happy with him. It's going to be a

pretty soft track at Scone which will suit him, and being a local track he's

trialled there a few times. Will Price is coming up from Victoria to ride

him for us, if he turns up to the form he was in Muswellbrook Cup day,

where he was unlucky with 62 kilograms, with 54 kilograms I think he'd

be a great chance."

Durrant praises Roma Cup rivalAdam Durrant believes his two chances in Saturday’s Roma Cup (Gr

3, 1200m), Massimo (Sessions) and Money Matters (Canford Cliffs),

will have to step up a level to defeat last-start Northam Stakes (Gr 3,

1100m) winner Cup Night (Maschino). "I've got a big opinion of Cup

Night," Durrant told Tabradio. "I think he is a proper Railway horse

and a Group 1 horse if he gets the right races at the right time. I feel

he may be too good for them. We might just play around these next

couple of runs and do our best. I'm happy to be wrong, but both horses

might be a tad under that real sharp grade. But in saying that, you have

got to be there because sometimes things can go wrong with these

horses.”

Lost And Running shooting for the starsLost And Running (Per Incanto) will get his first opportunity at stakes

level on Saturday when he contests the Luskin Star Stakes (Listed,

1300m) at Rosehill. The four-year-old has barely put a foot wrong so far

in his career, winning five of his six starts, and finishing runner-up in

the other. While victorious on a Good 4 track at Randwick last month,

trainer John O’Shea is pleased to see the Rosehill track rated a Heavy

8 ahead of the gelding’s first tilt over 1300 metres, with rain forecast

ahead of the weekend. “Rosehill can get a little firm and the fact there

will be the fire out of it on Saturday will be fantastic for him,” O’Shea

told SENTrack. “He worked beautifully on the Kensington track this

morning. We are really happy with what he did going into Saturday’s

race.”

Majestic Shot aims for Group 1Majestic Shot (Shooting To Win) will have her first look at black-type

company when she lines up in the Denise’s Joy Stakes (Listed, 1100m)

at Rosehill on Saturday. The Grant Allard-trained three-year-old

demolished her rivals in her first four career starts, but her undefeated

run came to an end last start when she finished fourth at Hawkesbury,

beaten just over a length. "I think she lost a bit of confidence, she had a

massive weight, things just didn't pan out and everything went wrong,"

Allard said. "But I think she was hitting the line as good as anything

at the finish. It certainly didn't go to plan and it was a combination of

things, we can't blame anything in particular and hopefully we can

bounce back from that. This has always been the race on the radar. Her

other wins have been pretty well spaced last preparation and I think

she's best fresh.”

Regal Power on comeback trail2020 All-Star Mile (1600m) winner Regal Power (Pierro) is set to return

to work after being picked up from the spelling paddock yesterday. The

Group 1-winning five-year-old has only managed three runs since his

All-Star mile win – two in August and one in February – after suffering

a lung infection in the spring, before a poor blood picture scuppered his

chance to defend his All-Star Mile crown. "I had a look at him last week and

he's getting a bit fat," owner Bob Peters, who is set to do some work with

him, told Racing.com.

NEW ZEALAND

Proposed super club merger a step closer The proposed merger between the Auckland

Racing Club (ARC) and Counties Racing Club

(CRC) took a step closer to completion this week

with members of both clubs holding respective

meetings where they discussed further details

of the merger. The clubs hope to double their

income over five years with the merger and

their collective assets. It will facilitate average

stake levels per race to double from $50,000

to $100,000, while Ellerslie would be set for a

major overhaul, with the installation of a new

StrathAyr surface, which would be used on at

least 40 race days per year, with work likely to

begin after the Auckland Cup carnival in March

next year. In order to help fund the infrastructure

and boost stakes levels, both clubs are planning

to sell off parcels of land, including the famed

Ellerslie Hill. Voting on the merger is likely

to take place at the end of next month. “Two

incorporated societies can’t merge, so we are

using the vehicle of the Auckland Racing Club

to bring Counties in,” ARC chief executive Paul

Wilcox said. “There will be a rule change at

this end to allow for that to happen, and our

(ARC) members need to vote on that, and the

Counties members need to vote for the merger

to proceed. The voting will take place once the

amalgamation documents have been agreed

to, so we are looking at late June-early July for

the voting, with the amalgamation to take place

in the new calendar racing season – August 1,

2021.”

New era looms for Pukekohe ParkThe merger between the Counties Racing Club

and Auckland Racing Club will also see training

facilities upgraded and racing set to continue

on a smaller scale at Pukekohe Park. As part of

the plan, the current training facilities would

be upgraded to improve its appeal rather than

seeking out a new training venue. “If you look at

the Australian models, Warwick Farm (in Sydney)

is a large training facility, they do race there, but

predominantly most of the racing is done at

Randwick and Rosehill,” Counties Racing Club

chairman Mark Chitty said. “We are right on the

verge of New Zealand’s largest city and there’s a

lot of opportunity there to get people engaged

with the industry.” There had been discussion

whether racing would continue at the venue, but

Chitty said it was likely a few days of midweek

racing would be retained. He also said some of

the current land at Pukekohe Park would be re-

developed, with some sold and other land for

lease, and said the Avondale Jockey Club had

been kept informed about the plan and that any

decision on its future involvement would be up to

its members.

Beauden seeking more Cup gloryBeauden (Bullbars) will look to record a hat-

trick of Group wins at Rotorua on Saturday in

the Campbell Infrastructure Rotorua Cup (Gr 3,

2200m). The Team Rogerson-trained six-year-old

has won four of his last six starts, including the

Awapuni Gold Cup (Gr 2, 2000m) and Canterbury

Gold Cup (Gr 3, 2000m). “The track was a little

bit chippy (at Riccarton last start), he didn’t like

it, but he showed how good he is,” said Graeme

Rogerson, who trains in partnership with his wife

Debbie. “And he was very impressive at Awapuni

the start before.” Arawa Park was rated a Slow 8

yesterday morning, with showers forecast over

the next couple of days. “The drier the better for

him, but we will see what happens,” Rogerson

added. Looking forward to the spring, Rogerson

is leaning towards bypassing the Hawke’s Bay

Triple Crown to solely focus on Melbourne later

in the year. “He is going to go out for a spell and

hopefully get ready for the spring in Melbourne,”

Rogerson said. “I don’t think he will head to

Hastings, but I will discuss it with Joan [owner-

breeder Joan Egan]. At this stage we are looking

at the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups. But we will

play it by ear and see how he comes back. I think

he will stay and he deserves his chance at a good

race.”

154 for ShamardalProgressive five-year-old Solid Stone (5 g ex

Landmark by Arch) came alone down the

stands’ side under Ryan Moore at Windsor on

Monday night to claim the honours in the Royal

Windsor Stakes (Listed, 1m) and become the

154th individual stakes winner for late Darley

sire Shamardal (Giant’s Causeway). Racing

prominently, Moore kept the gelding to the

nearside rail as Stormy Antarctic (Stormy Atlantic)

took the field across off the bend to the far rail and

he had to settle for a two and a half-length second.

He was a further four and three-quarters lengths

clear of Qaysar (Choisir) in third. The Sir Michael

Stoute-trained Solid Stone progressed through

the ranks and went up 11lbs in the handicap last

year with two victories and a runner-up placing in

the valuable Balmoral Handicap (1m) at Ascot in

October. His record is now five wins from 17 starts.

Four for CaravaggioFormer Coolmore shuttler Caravaggio (Scat

Daddy) recorded his fourth individual winner

yesterday when Dizzy Bizu (2 f ex Izzy Bizu by

Kodiac) won the newcomers (1000m) race at

Chantilly for Stephane Wattel. Ridden by Theo

Bachelot, she prevailed by a head from Hopeful

Melody (Havana Gold) and the pair had drawn

three lengths clear of Fugace (Siyouni) and

the rest of the field. Dizzy Bizou is raced by

her breeder Peter-David Savill and is the first

foal out of his Listed scorer Izzy Bizu (Kodiac),

who is a half-sister to German Group 2 winner

Donnerschlag (Bahamian Bounty). Dual Group

1-winning sprinter Caravaggio, who shuttled

for one season in 2018, started his Northern

Hemisphere career at Coolmore in Ireland but

spent this year at Ashford in Kentucky for a fee

of $25,000 (approx. AU$19,577).

Eight for Rio De La PlataTahlie (3 f ex Tianshan by Lahint) landed her

third win on the bounce and broke through at

stakes level on start seven in the Prix des Lilas

(Listed, 1600m) at Chantilly for Pascal Bary to

become the eighth individual stakes winner

for her sire Rio De La Plata (Rahy). Ridden by

Christophe Soumillon she tracked the leaders

and showed a good turn of foot to score by

a length and a quarter from Frenchette (The

Gurkha) and Lady Day (Motivator), who were

split by a head respectively. Tahlie is a half-

sister to dual Group 3 winner Trixia (Siyouni)

out of the Listed scorer Tianshan (Lahint). Rio

De La Plata started his career at Darley’s Haras

du Logis in France and relocated to Ljungstorps

Stud in Sweden in 2018.

FR: Makaloun returns with Prix de Guiche success Aga Khan homebred Makaloun (Bated Breath),

who lost his unbeaten record when finishing

third in the Criterium de Saint-Cloud (Gr 1,

2000m) on his last start in October, bounced

back to claim a third stakes success in the Prix

de Guiche (Gr 3, 1800m) at Chantilly yesterday.

Having already won the Prix de Conde (Gr 3,

1800) over course and distance last September,

Makaloun was sent off as favourite for the

contest on his seasonal reappearance and duly

obliged under Christophe Soumillon, who was

recording a stakes double on the card. The

promising Jean-Claude Rouget-trained colt

did everything right and saw off Millebosc (Le

Havre) by half a length, while Fort Payne (Rio

De La Plata) was a further short neck back in

third.

UK: English tracks to welcome back spectatorsRacegoers in England will be able to return

to racecourses from next Monday after the

UK government confirmed step three of the

roadmap out of lockdown will go ahead as

planned. In a televised address on Monday

evening, prime minister Boris Johnson

announced the next stage of the government's

plan will commence in a week's time. The

BHA gave the green light for racecourses to

end behind-closed-doors racing and will give

more details this week as to how capacity

limits and other protocols will be applied. The

government's own guidelines set attendance

for all but the largest sports stadia at 4,000

spectators or 50 per cent of a venue's capacity,

whichever number is lower. A joint statement

from racing's major stakeholders also included

the news that owners will be allowed into the

paddock from next Monday, while they will

press for a return to full crowds at the next

stage of the government's programme on June

21. The BHA also confirmed that, while face

coverings will still be required in the parade ring

and indoors, they will no longer be mandatory

in other outdoor areas on course. The lifting of

restrictions means there will be some paying

spectators at the Oaks and Derby at Epsom on

June 4 and 5, both of which are already sold out

following a ballot, while officials are hoping that

attendance for each of the five days of Royal Ascot

later in the month could rise to 10,000.

UK: Australian-bound Hint Of Stars aims to follow successful pathThe Highclere Racing-owned Hint Of Stars (Sea

The Stars) will bid to follow in the hoofprints of

stakes winners Libran (Lawman) and Starcaster

(Dansili) when he lines up in the Conundrum

HR Consulting Handicap (1m 4f) at York today.

The Kevin Philippart de Foy-trained Hint Of

Stars will be making his first start for Highclere

after he was acquired from Midlands Racing

Club in March and is set to join Matt Cumani

in Australia following the conclusion of the

British summer. Starcaster won the race in 2019

before going on to land the Torney Night Cup

(Listed, 2500m) in February, while 2015 victor

and fellow Highclere-owned Libran subsequently

had a successful career in Australia, winning the

Chairman’s Handicap (Gr 2, 2600m) and the

Kingston Town Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m), both at

Randwick, as well as Rosehill’s N E Manion Cup

(Gr 3, 2400m). Hint Of Stars will bid for his fourth

consecutive win when he lines up today. “They are

big shoes for Hint Of Stars to fill, but we are hopeful

that he may usher in a new era for Highclere

Australia – just as Libran did all those years ago,”

said Highclere Australia racing manager Andrew

Hawkins. “We hope he will follow a similar path

to Libran: the Duke Of Edinburgh at Royal Ascot,

then the Ebor Festival at York in some capacity,

before heading to Australia.”

FR: Boudot in police custodyPrix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Gr 1, 2400m)-

winning jockey Pierre-Charles Boudot is

in police custody in Chantilly as officers

investigate claims brought against him by

a 25-year-old woman. Allegations of sexual

assault first surfaced in March, at which time

both Boudot and his legal team strenuously

denied any wrongdoing and vowed to prove

his innocence. The state prosecutor's office in

Senlis confirmed his presence in custody on

Monday, initially for a period of 24 hours and

with the possibility of extending his detention

by a further 24 hours. No charges have yet

been brought and the prosecutor's office is

scheduled to give more information today.

Boudot has raced to 103 winners this season –

more than 50 clear of his nearest rival – and is

on course to challenge his personal best of 300

in a calendar year, set in 2016, as well as the

French record of 305 winners set by Christophe

Soumillon in 2017.

LLOYD JACKSON | @ANZ_NEWS

The NZB National Weanling Sale

at Karaka on Friday will present a

first public glimpse of some of the

first-crop foals from New Zealand’s

new and exciting stallions, as the Australasian

bloodstock market continues with its breeding

stock sales.

Kiwi Chronicles visited and contacted

stud managers of the seven new sires, whose

first crop were foaled last spring, with all but

one stallion represented at the May 14 foal

sale. They include Rich Hill Stud’s Ace High

(High Chaparral), Japanese import Staphanos

(Deep Impact) (Novara Park), Cambridge Stud

resident Embellish (Savabeel), U S Navy Flag

(War Front), who stood his first two seasons at

Valachi Downs before relocating to The Oaks

Stud for the upcoming season, as well as Ocean

Emperor (Zabeel) (Weowna Park), Eminent

(Frankel) (Brighthill Farm) and Waikato Stud’s

Ardrossan (Redoute’s Choice), the only stallion

not represented at Friday’s sale.

The auction is the first opportunity for studs

to showcase their new stallion's offspring as

buyers pass first judgement on their foals and

bid to kickstart a stallion’s career ahead of their

third and crucial season in the breeding barn.

Although comprising a select 114 lots, there

will be plenty to tantalise buyers at the Karaka

sale.

Ace High (High Chaparral), Rich Hill Stud2019 fee: $10,000

High Chaparral (Sadler’s Wells) and his

sons are revered in Australasia. So You Think

and Dundeel are among the best performed

stallions in the southern hemisphere and

Contributer recently joined the Group 1 club

when his Lion’s Roar defeated a top field in

the Randwick Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m). As did

Toronado, who sired the recent William Reid

Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Masked Crusader

in what’s been an exceptional breakthrough

year for the Swettenham Stud stallion.

While the High Chaparral line is more

renowned for producing offspring that peak

at three and beyond, Rich Hill Stud’s John

Thompson makes an important observation of

his very own son of High Chaparral, dual Group

1 winner Ace High, who raced

“Ace High is very interesting because it is

too easy to look at his Victoria Derby victory

and come to the (inaccurate) conclusion that

breeders and owners will have to wait. Not so,”

said Thompson.

“At two, in October, he ran second to

Champagne Cuddles (later a dual Group winner

and multiple Group 1 placed sprinter) at his

first start. As a maiden he ran fifth in the (VRC)

Sires’ and fourth in the (ATC) Champagne.

“His trainer, David Payne, said he was the

soundest horse in the stable, that’s why he kept

him going,” continued Thompson. “He won

in July (of his two-year-old year) but was kept

in training, ready to go for the three-year-old

spring semi-classics, winning the Gloaming,

the Spring Champion and, of course, the Group

1 classic, the Victoria Derby in succession.

“His first crop are strong and well

muscled. Overall they’re nice, correct foals.

Ace High has certainly stamped them

because he, too, is a physically strong type,”

concluded Thompson.

Ace High has 69 first crop foals on the

ground and will be represented by nine lots at

the upcoming NZB Weanling Sale.

sire of sires Redoute’s Choice (Danehill), but

also from his damsire, Iglesia (Last Tycoon).

The latter is responsible for the very much in

demand Written Tycoon, who is enjoying a

spectacular season in Australia.

Unbeaten in two starts at two, including a

Listed win, Ardrossan did not come up at three

due to a heart ailment.

Waikato Stud’s Mark Chittick takes up the

story: “We sent Ardrossan to Australia with

very high hopes as he’d shown he was a high

quality galloper. It might have been a virus but,

whatever it was, he was not himself.

“Our vet, Dr. Chris Phillips, did some

research and found a treatment. Ardrossan

came back at four to win the Concorde. So, we

went back to Sydney, had to scratch due to a

wet track then he injured himself.”

One of Ardrossan’s premier performances

was when finishing a close third behind

multiple Group 1 winners Melody Belle

(Commands) and The Bostonian (Jimmy

Choux) in the Waikato Sprint, (Gr 1, 1400m).

“So, there is a genuine reason for not

attaining a Group 1 but he had all the right

credentials,” continued Chittick. “He fits a

similar profile to Centaine who had 34 foals

his first year (Ardrossan has 39) and had an

amazing first crop of 12 stakes winners.

“They’re nice foals and if they can run it

will be all on. He probably represents the best

value of any stallion in the country. He can only

go one way and that is upwards,” concluded

Chittick.

Ardorssan is a half-brother to two stakes

winners and his dam is a stakes placed sister

to Diamondsontheinside (Iglesia), a multiple

stakes winner with 15 career successes.

Ardrossan is the sole first-crop stallion

to not be represented at the upcoming NZB

National Weanling Sale.

Embellish (Savabeel), Cambridge Stud2019 fee: $5,000

Embellish (Savabeel) may not be the

first son of multiple champion sire Savabeel

(Zabeel) to stand at stud but he has found

himself in the perfect location to assume the

responsibility of continuing the Sir Tristram –

Zabeel line.

A classic winner of the New Zealand

Two Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) and

a brother to the top class Group 1-winning

mare Diademe, he is from a super family and

is blessed with good looks. His opportunity will

be enhanced by having access to some of the

very best families available at Brendan and Jo

Lindsay’s historic Cambridge Stud.

Kiwi Chronicles visited Cambridge Stud

recently and caught up with CEO Henry

Plumptre, as well as Scott Calder, and Cameron

Ring, who handle stallion nominations.

“Here at Cambridge Stud we have a lineup

of foals that are everything you’d like to see in

foals. They are correct, strong and have good

tops,” stated Plumptre. “He is the only Group 1

son of Savabeel at stud and Savabeel is having

a phenomenal season, especially in Australia.

“We supported Embellish with mares from

Cambridge Stud’s best and, judging from his

first crop, we won’t have any trouble filling his

book this year.”

For Ring and Embellish, it's a case of “full

circle” as he prepped Embellish for the yearling

sale while at Waikato Stud as he sold for

$775,000 at the 2016 NZB Karaka Yearling Sale.

“Being a David Ellis buy, Embellish was

looked at by all of David’s advisors and experts

before making the decision to buy him,” said

Ring. “In that regard, the colt had to be nigh on

perfect. He was the highest priced Savabeel at

that time.”

“His conformation was and is excellent and

he is passing that on to his foals. One of his first

mares was severely offset but her foal is very

correct,” Ring continued.

“As a yearling, Embellish knew he was

number one and everyone around him knew it

too.”

Adding to Ring’s assessment, Calder

said: “Embellish is a $10,000 stallion at a very

affordable $4,000 fee. The intention was to get

numbers on the ground to give him his best

opportunity.

“He has covered 240 mares in his first

two seasons but part of the reason for those

numbers is his good looks.”

Stallion manager David O’Leary, who also

worked at Waikato Stud, looking after both

O’Reilly (Last Tycoon) and Savabeel, said:

“Embellish has plenty of traits of both stallions.

He has a placid nature and is a dream to handle.”

Embellish has 76 first crop foals on the

ground and will be represented by six lots at the

upcoming NZB Weanling Sale.

Eminent (Frankel), Brighthill Farm2019 fee: $8,000

The first, and so far only, son of Frankel

(Galileo) to stand in New Zealand is Eminent.

There is a reason that Timeform rated

Frankel the best ever. He was a powerhouse

galloper who simply pulverised his opponents.

Staphanos – Pressera colt NOVARA PARK

Page 13: STEVE MORANRandwick Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Ilovethiscity (Magic Albert) will stand the 2021 breeding season at Noor Elaine Farm for a fee of $8,800 (inc. GST), double his $4,400

Before an Australian campaign, which

saw Eminent finish second to Avilius (Pivotal)

in the Ranvet Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m), the colt

had the class to score at Group 2 level at

Deauville (beating Avilius) and at Group 3 level

at Newmarket. He also ran third in the Irish

Champion Stakes (Gr 1, 1m2f) and finished

fourth, less than two lengths behind Wings Of

Eagles (Pour Moi), in the 2017 Epsom Derby

(Gr 1, 1m4f).

Brighthill Farm studmaster Nick King

is excited about the prospects of Eminent.

“His first foals have not disappointed,” he

said. “They have plenty of leg length, are tall

and athletic. They have good walks and have no

conformation issues whatsoever.

“The stallion himself is just a lovely horse

and has a fantastic syndicate behind him, as

he is owned by Sir Peter Vela with support

from shareholders such as Windsor Park Stud,

Cambridge Stud and Haunui Farm, he is being

given every opportunity and he has delivered,”

said King.

“Physically, they are more like his sire

Frankel than their grandsire Galileo, which

is good given the success of the Frankels in

Sydney this autumn.”

Eminent has 71 first crop foals on the

ground and will be represented by four lots at

the upcoming NZB Weanling Sale.

Ocean Emperor (Zabeel), Weowna Park2019 fee: $7,000

Ocean Emperor has a first-rate race

record of nine wins, including three Group 2

victories to his name, plus his pedigree is really

fascinating.

A son of Zabeel, a sire of sires through

Savabeel, the recently-passed Reset, Octagonal

and Zed, Ocean Emperor is bred on identical

lines to the outstanding racemare Probabeel

(Savabeel).

His dam is a Pins (Snippets) three-quarter blood

sister to Far Fetched (Pins), the dam of Probabeel.

She, of course, is by Zabeel’s son Savabeel.

Owner and studmaster Gary Hennessy is

very pleased with his first crop.

“They are strong behind, they’re correct

and have a fantastic temperament, just like

their sire,” he said.

“I have chosen his mares carefully. Sir

Patrick Hogan set the blueprint when it came

to choosing mates for Zabeel so mares from the

Danehill line were my target.”

Hennessy, who trained multiple Group 1

Champion and now successful sire Ocean Park

(Thorn Park), was asked to compare Ocean

Emperor with Ocean Park.

“He won a two-year-old trial by five lengths,

unusual for a Zabeel but I thought enough

of him to nominate him for the Cox Plate. He

defeated seven-time Group 1 Champion Kawi

(Savabeel) at weight-for-age.

“We have an Ocean Emperor colt from Sha

Tin Sunday in the (NZB National Weanling)

sale and I will eat my hat if he isn’t a winner at

two,” concluded Hennessy.

Ocean Emperor has ten first crop foals on

the ground and will be represented by four lots

at the upcoming NZB Weanling Sale. Notably,

all four are from Danehill-line mares.

Staphanos (Deep Impact), Novara Park2019 fee: $7,000

Representing the hugely successful Sunday

Silence-Deep Impact line, Staphanos did

the majority of his racing in Japan with a few

worthwhile trips across the East China Sea to

Hong Kong. He remained sound through six

seasons and ended with considerable earnings

in his native country.

A Group 3 winner in his homeland he

also gained three Group 1 placings, two in

Hong Kong are particularly notable, finishing

second in the Queen Elizabeth II Cup (Gr 1,

2000m) behind Blazing Speed (Dylan Thomas)

and third, behind Champion Maurice (Screen

Hero), in the Hong Kong Cup (Gr 1, 2000m).

Novara Park’s Luigi Muollo is bullish about

the prospects of Staphanos and the Deep

Impact (Sunday Silence) influence.

“Staphanos is the highest stake earner at

stud in New Zealand,” he said. “He is a son of

super sire Deep Impact.

“The late Deep Impact was again the world’s

leading stallion by progeny earnings in 2020, a

title he has held annually since 2013 and he has

a commanding lead already in 2021. He is the

sire of 173 individual stakes winners and has a

winners to runners ratio of 74 per cent.”

Regarding the first crop of Staphanos,

Muollo stated: “His first foals have been well

received by breeders. They are strong, correct,

and balanced, have good bone, excellent scope,

and most importantly they come with Deep

Impact quality.

“Novara Park have supported Staphanos

with some of our best mares,” he continued.

“We have a beautiful Staphanos filly out of Extra

“We also have a stunning Staphanos filly

out of Cool Storm, the dam of Auckland Cup

winner Ocean Billy.

“Staphanos also provides an affordable

service fee to breeders. Many breeders that have

foals on the ground are returning to him and his

foals will certainly convince other breeders to

send a mare to him.”

Staphanos has 62 first crop foals on the

ground and will be represented by four lots at

the upcoming NZB Weanling Sale.

U S Navy Flag (War Front), Valachi Downs2019 fee: $20,000(Standing at The Oaks Stud in 2021)

On performance alone, U S Navy Flag (War

Front) has a mouth-watering race record, twice

scoring at Group 1 level at two and returning

at three to take out the time-tested July Cup

(Gr 1, 6f) after finishing third in the Irish 2,000

Guineas (Gr 1, 1m).

His family is enormously talented. His

sister, Roly Poly, matched his three Group 1s

while their dam, Misty For Me (Galileo) went

one better, bagging four Group 1s including the

Irish 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m).

Gareth Downey, Valachi Downs general

manager, is glad to see U S Navy Flag continue

to shuttle to New Zealand, after the stud’s

business realignment.

The stallion received strong support from

New Zealand breeders in his first two seasons at

stud and will return for his third season at The

Oaks Stud in Cambridge.

“His race record and pedigree are

superb, and the moment you see him and

watch him move, it is immediately evident

what a high class individual he is,” said

Downey.

“The real key of any stallion is, of course,

the quality of progeny they leave. Rick Williams

of The Oaks Stud was concerned that such a

stallion might be lost to the industry and visited

all the studs that had his foals before deciding

to make a play to stand him.

“His feedback and feedback from breeders

around Australasia has been exceptional. The

line of foals we have here by him at Valachi is as

good as anyone could hope for in a first crop of

foals,” he said.

That question legitimately arises again

after Kah rode five winners (from just

six rides) at Caulfield last Saturday to

further increase her commanding

lead in the state metropolitan premiership and

all but guarantee, injury aside, that she will

become – technically – the first jockey to ride

100 winners in a season in Melbourne.

With 21 meetings remaining, you’d

imagine she’d comfortably reach the triple

figure milestone – a tally rarely threatened in

Melbourne with only Damien Oliver, Craig

Williams having ever reached the 90 mark.

Brett Prebble, in 1999-2000, in effect rode 100

winners but his haul is recorded at 99 and a half

(dead heats have only been recorded as straight

wins since 2011-12).

These numbers again underline how Kah has

become so incredibly successful and dominant.

Sitting on 86 winners, she leads the premiership

by 31 from world-class jockeys Damian Lane,

Oliver and Williams, Jye McNeil, Mark Zahra,

John Allen, Luke Currie and whiz-kid Will Price.

Her strike-rate is easily best among the

leading riders.

Four of her five winners, last Saturday, came

on horses she was riding for the first time which

is a recurring theme of her success. Admittedly

the market decreed that each of the five was the

best horse in the race but her engagement also

has a bearing on price.

Each of the five she had perfectly poised

to strike in the run and it was a painless watch

for anybody who backed her mounts. They

won with almost negligible use of the whip but

rather responded to Kah’s change of grip to find

a required burst of acceleration after travelling

sweetly, as they invariably do, through the race.

“Technically, she is very good. I like the

way she is balanced on them and she positions

them very well,” said leading trainer John

O’Shea before Kah won the Group 3 Carr Stakes

on his All Hallows’ Eve last month.

Her success will almost certainly encourage

the already growing rise in the number of

female apprentices. Since the 2014-15 season,

the number of female riders in races in Victoria

has increased by more than 50 per cent.

Her style may possibly precipitate further

acceleration of the push to ban the whip or more

severely limit its use. She may well be, like so

many great sportspeople, a game/rule changer.

Her ability to coax the best from the

enigmatic Nature Strip was a highlight of this

season along with her ability to cope with the

pressure of riding for Godolphin in a Group 1

away from her home patch – and duly winning

the Doncaster on Cascadian, who’d not won for

over 12 months despite having been ridden by

some of the nation’s best.

Her deeds have been so spectacular she

has completely overshadowed Rachel King,

whose performance to be sitting third on the

Sydney metropolitan premiership is absolutely

meritorious in its own right.

All of this leads me to conclude that, right

now, she is the world’s best female sportsperson

and one of the best, full stop.

Her only rivals could, in fact, be fellow riders

Hollie Doyle and Rachael Blackmore – competing,

as they each do, on level terms against the men in

a dangerous and demanding sport.

Motor racing and the broader equestrian

world are the only other pursuits which could

be similarly categorised and while many

women have excelled in these domains, none

have dominated quite like Kah has this season

or as Doyle threatens to do.

Doyle and Blackmore are legitimate rivals

to the title. Doyle rode more flat winners, in

2020, than all bar Ben Curtis.

Blackmore not only became the first

woman to ride the Grand National winner this

year but she also finished second on the Irish

National Hunt (jumps) premiership to Paul

Townend.

They are extraordinary achievements and

these women will change the face of racing.

They provide us with one of the very best

advertisements for the sport but one which, I

fear, is still underplayed by racing authorities

around the world.

All the more remarkable when you consider

it was little more than 40 years ago when Linda

Jones became the first registered female jockey

to win a race against the males at Doomben in

this month in 1979.
