Performance Report Format How would you evaluate the Survey Monkey process of reporting on the performance items of your programs? Do you see any challenges in collecting data and preparing the performance report?

Litter Prevention Best Management Practices According to Keep American Beautiful surveys, one of the strongest contributors to littering is the prevalence of existing litter. Consistently it is found that litter begets litter, and that individuals are much more likely to litter into Littered environments. These findings strongly support the need for ongoing clean-up and beautification efforts. Also interesting for anti-litter programs, posting litter prevention messages or signs in already-littered environments is likely to exacerbate the littering problem, rather than fix it.

Litter Prevention Best Management Practices A consistent and on-going public outreach effort is the most effective way to bring a litter awareness message to your community. Anti-litter messages are a good way to highlight a community littering problem, but the stronger message is one that emphasizes a clean environment, beautification, and emphasizes the general community norm against littering.

Litter Cleanups & Recycling Recyclable items, particularly paper items, metals and Beverage containers, are found to be a noteworthy portion of roadside litter and offer an opportunity to both reduce litter and increase recycling rates at the same time. Questions: Does your programs include recycling of materials from the organized litter cleanups? If so, how is this managed? Where do the recyclables go after collections?

Recycling Rate Reporting DEQ provides access to the recycling rate reporting forms/links on its website in January of each calendar year. (www.deq.virginia.gov)www.deq.virginia.gov Recycling Rate Report guidance is also available on DEQs website to help with any questions about the different categories of materials listed on the report form.

Recycling Rate Reporting Reports are due to DEQ by April 30, hard copy with original signature. Upon receipt of the report, DEQ begins its review. Questions about any data items are emailed to the identified reporting entity for clarification. After the review is completed, DEQ notifies the SWPU of its calculated recycling rate by email and letter.

Recycling Rate Reporting/Tracking Effective after CY 2012, each city, county, and town in the Commonwealth, or SWPU, with populations of 100,000 or below shall only be required to submit to the Department of Environmental Quality every four years the data and calculations required in 9 VAC 20- 130-120 B&C. 17 SWPUs are required to report annually, and last year 25 other SWPUs reported.

Recycling Rate Reporting/Tracking Regulations for the Development of Solid Waste Management Plans - Section 9 VAC 20-130-120 B& C of the Regulations requires that a minimum recycling rate of 15% or 25% of the total municipal solid waste generated annually in each city, county, town, or Region be maintained. IMPORTANT NOTE: You still need to track your rate even though an official report to DEQ is not required until 2017.
