OBJECTIVE OF A COMMENTARY

To value and interpret a film or episode of a series.

This analysis implies a decomposition of the text in

order to recompose it.

You can analyse: Socio-historical context of the reading / the production

or release / the narrative Psychosocial elements

Intra or intertextual elements

Aesthetical elements

STEP 1: SELECTION AND VIEWING

It is important to choose a film or series you are veryfamiliar with and that is easily available.

You should then watch it several times.

You should take notes while you watch it about

anything you feel might be interesting to comment onor research (intertextuality, visual styles, context).

STEP 2: TECHNICAL AND ARTISTIC DETAILS

The technical details is the information that identifies theaudiovisual text, the production details and the names ofthe people involved in it.

You should include: Title in the original language

Title translated in the language of the country where you aredoing the commentary

Production year (it can be the release year) Nationality (production countries)

Names of main production companies

Name of main distribution company

Sound

The artistic details refer to the names of the mainactors in the film and of the characters they play.

You should list them in the same order as they appearin the credits.

The names of characters are generally not translated,except in some TV series or cartoons (PedroPicapiedra, Homero Simpson, Bob Esponja)

STEP 3: SYNOPSIS

This is a summary of the film, without going intomuch detail or giving away the end. Generally it is only

one paragraph of about 5 or 6 lines in length.

STEP 4: ARTISTIC BIOGRAPHY

The artistic biography of a director is a text which brieflygoes over his/her artistic work.

Its aim is to integrate the audiovisual text within a group of

audiovisual texts with more or less similar characteristics,as a product of a specific socio-historical context.

It should include:

List of the most important works of art made by the artist forthe same medium (cinema) or for any other medium(literature, television, theatre)

List of prizes which the films/cartoons/series were awarded.

STEP 5: REVIEW OF CRITICISM

This is a review of the critical comments written abouta specific film/series.

After reading at least 3 critical reviews you shouldwrite a summary of these reviews. The best way to dothis is to compare the critical reviews read. It isimportant here not to include your personalcomments or opinions.

STEP 6: REVIEW OF THE

BIBLIOGRAPHICAL THEORY

After you have completed the summary of the critical

reviews you chose, you should create a bibliographycontaining the different theories you will be using foryour analysis. This bibliography should also containthe references of the critical reviews you based

yourself on.

WRITING THE ANALYSIS

The first step is to decide upon what kind of analysis youwill concentrate on:

Psychosocial: personal experience of the viewer in relation to

the film, its themes and other similar films. Intra or intertextual: narrative structure, genre, relation with

other texts. Aesthetical: form, style, technique Socio-historical context of the production / release / reading

/ narrative

You should comment on the possible meanings of the filmanalysed.
