More than 200,000 babies are born in Orange County and surrounding counties every year. About 10 percent of those newborns will need critical care in their first moments of life. That enormous responsibility—to give thousands of babies a chance at healthy lives—rests largely on CHOC Children’s. For several decades, we have risen to that challenge, offering highly specialized care for babies born too soon, who have low birth weight or have a medical condition that requires special care.

Our 54-bed tertiary/quaternary NICU at CHOC Children’s Hospital in Orange is designated by the American Academy

of Pediatrics as Level 4, the highest level available. As a Level 4 unit, we exceed the standards of a traditional NICU, including a wide range of services featuring:

• A decade of experience in extra corporeal membrane oxygen-ation (ECMO), or heart-lung bypass for critically ill infants

• A Small Baby Unit focusing on the unique needs of the smallest and sickest newborns

• The only Surgical NICU on the West Coast, providing expert pre- and post-operative care as well as intra-operative care

• An eight-bed Cardiac NICU featuring the latest technology and providing comprehensive care for babies with congenital heart defects

• A Neurocritical NICU equipped to carefully treat babies with neurological issues such as seizures, asphyxiation and brain damage

• State-of-the-art respiratory therapy services

• Use of immunotherapy and biotherapy to treat neonatal infections

• Nitric oxide treatment

• A 24-hour transport team, the only one equipped with a pediatric oscillator

Neonatal lntensive Care Unit (NICU)

A Vision for a New Model of Newborn Care While our neonatal intensive care unit is among the best in the country, we can do more. Our current NICU was originally constructed with open bays—where multiple bassinets are situated close together in one large room, surrounded by high- tech devices. The unit provides the highest-quality neonatal and mother-baby services, but this care is delivered in a busy environment, with little room for parents to bond with their baby.

To enhance the experience for our patients, families and staff, CHOC has a vision for a better approach to care.

• We are constructing 36 private NICU rooms in the Bill Holmes Tower

• Each room will have enough space for a bassinet, family members and the complete medical team

• The private-room setting provides the space and privacy that parents need in order to be more intimately involved in the care of their baby, including sleeping overnight

• Private rooms also give staff more access to and interaction with families and patients

• Even more, research has shown that private NICU rooms lead to improved outcomes for babies

Research has shown that infants in a private-room setting have a higher average weight gain per day, fewer days requiring intravenous nutrition, and a reduced rate of hospital-acquired infections. A recent study published in the journal Pediatrics1 found that infants cared for in single-family rooms weighed more at discharge and gained weight more rapidly that those cared for in an open design. Also, they required fewer medical procedures, had increased attention and experienced less stress, lethargy and pain.

The researchers attributed these findings to increased maternal involvement.

With three neonatal intensive care units, a team of board- certified neonatologists, and special units just for small babies and those who need complex surgery, no one on the West Coast is more dedicated to giving babies a healthy start.
