Directions

In preparation for 1x1 rib Tubular Cast On (excellent tutorial at Knitty) usingsmaller needles and waste yarn cast on 63 sts using the backwards loopmethod. Working flat, switch to main project yarn and purl one row. Next

three rows: knit one row, purl one row, knit one row.

Now, purl side facing pick up working yarn purl bumps from first row as youwork back across. Purl one stitch, pick up one stitch place on left hand needleand knit through the back loop, repeat across. (126 sts).Work one row of ribbing flat then join to knit in the round being careful not totwist your knitting. Remove waste yarn at cast on edge at any point.

Continue in ribbing for 1.25 inches. On last ribbing round run a lifeline through

your work and leave in place. You will use this later during blocking to keepyour ribbing from stretching out.

Switch to larger needles.Set up rows:R1: (p1, k6, p1, k10, p1, k6) repeat across until last 2 stitches then k2tog (125sts)R2&3: (p1, k6, p1, k10, p1, k6) repeat across

Begin cable and lace pattern starting with Row 4 of chart. Continue workingrows 1-4 of chart until you have 4.5 inches in pattern (not including ribbing).End with a Row 4.

NB: On Row 1 of the chart watch the last YO before the purl stitch as it is easyto lose.

Cut yarn leaving tail of at least 6” use tapestry needle to run it throughremaining live stitches. Pull tight.

Weave in ends. Use cast on tail to sew up the few rows of ribbing worked flat.Wash and block. While wet, stretch beret gently over ~10 inch dinner plate.Center hat crown and pull until satisfied. Use the lifeline above the ribbing to

pull it in tight and tie ends. This should keep your ribbing from stretching outtoo much. Place plate on top of something like a jar and let dry. Once dry, remove ribbing lifeline. Take off, wear and enjoy!
