Improved Safety Culture• A positive culture change is demonstrated by employee motivation,

release and implementation of new documents, and understanding of the requirements.

• Additionally, SMA has a very positive relationship with Center Directorates including Procurement, Legal, and the Contracting Officer's Technical Representative.

• Every new employee at Stennis Space Center (SSC) has an orientation session with the Center Director, Deputy Director and Associate Director where Employee Safety is emphasized from the Center Management Leadership. This is also documented in the Stennis Space Center's (SSC) Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) 2012 Annual Self-Evaluation.

• Continual improvement in the SSC Safety Culture is a VPP goal for 2013.

VPP

• Perform Gap Assessment Yearly• SMA works with each directorate for feedback for

elements in the VPP Self Evaluation• MOVERS – Civil Servant Employee Committee

• SHAKERS Awards– Presented by Center Director to an employee

• VPP Cards • STARS (Striving to Achieve Real Safety)– Center Wide Employee Committee

Electrical Panels• Throughout the site inspections of

Electrical Panels at Stennis Space Center (SSC), a unique new methodology was found in how Panel Schedules are installed, printed, and recorded. Rather than just one small schedule normally seen in the Panels, this process utilizes a small pocket card for each Breaker Position in such a manner as they overlap which allows for more information and indicates common single phase positions making up a single three phase breaker over three positions. This allows more room for field notes and/or updates until information can be processed to generate new cards.

• The SSC Program is called The Panel Manager System.

Monthly Safety Topics

• Presentations based on Center trends.– Driving Safety, Electrical Safety, etc.– Prepared by Subject Matter Expert (SME)• IH, SMA, AHJ, Fire Department, etc.

• SME will present the Monthly Safety Topic at the Center Director’s Senior Staff Meeting.

• SMA goes to other departments staff meetings

• Relationship Building

Workforce

• SSC is less than 1% of NASA’s workforce.– Have a small but motivated and knowledgeable

workforce which is fully utilized in support of the projects.

– The Center has been able to convert contractors to Civil Servants thereby maintaining knowledge base for the unique work done at the Center. The workforce has to wear "multiple hats" which has resulted in backups being developed in many critical skill areas at the Center.

ranked first as the best place to work within NASA by the non-profit Partnership for Public Service organization.

• Stennis was also ranked second out of 292 organizations within the federal government and was ranked first in the government for effective leadership, employee skills/mission match and strategic management.
