Weight loss during winter weatherEMMA HAMEL

Keeping theweight off duringwin-ter months is extremely difficult.

With the rain pounding outside andyour latest book purchase to keep youinside, socialmediaupdates featuringlog fires and hot chocolate will.Hereare some ideas tokeep thewin-

ter weight-gain to a minimum:) ExerciseThis should go without saying, but

it is important anyway. Get up and dosomeexercise.Youdon’thave to swimin the freezingAtlantic for two hours, all you need to do is make an effortto build up a sweat every couple ofdays. Why not join WalkForLife, buya rebounder (a mini trampoline)which you can use from the comfortof your living room or check out yourlocal squash league. Whatever is funfor you, that is the key.

) Look insideMake time for some introspection.

If you’re anything like me, you wouldlove to know why those sneaky kilosare finding their way onto your scale.Keep a diary, or get to work ten min-

utes early so you can sit in the car andprepare for the day. I found that hyp-notherapy really helpedme figure outwhy I viewed food and a healthy life-style the way I did and replace the in-correct thinking with a better atti-tude.

) Don’t stop eatingI’d like to replace the normal rhyme

of an apple a day with this: an applea day is great if it is replacing an un-healthy snack.Watchwhatyou’re eat-ing. If you just read “be hungry”, Iwant you to go back and read it again.Ifyou’rehungry–eat! Buteattherightstuff.

) Get lots of sleepEveryone tries to make the most of

their weekend or day off, but remem-ber that theyare there foryou torelax.Makesureyouaregettingenoughrestasyouare farmore likely to crave sug-ar and miss your workout if you aretired. You need at least six to eighthours of sleep night. Add a nap overthe weekend if you have a stressfullifestyle.

) Be accountableIt’smuchharder to loadupon treats

at your monthly shop if you know

you’ll have to tell someoneabout it thenext day. Start a chat groupwith a fewgirlfriends or commit to telling yourpartner when you eat unhealthily orskip your workout for more than twodays. If you’d like to be a bit more re-movedfromtheperson,bookafewses-sions with a life coach.

) Take your vitaminsThere is a definite correlation be-

tween lacking vitamins and trying toreplace them by eatingmore food. Ex-tra vitamins in winter will have theadded benefit of fighting off colds andensuring a healthy skin.Find a nutritionist in your area to

makesureyou’retakingtherightvita-mins for your lifestyle.Of course, the best thing would be

to do all these things on a consistentbasis. If change scares you, try making

just one change and only add anotherwhen you’ve got that one waxed. For further information on how to

keep theweight off yourwaistline thiswinter, e-mail [email protected] I’ll send you some more informa-tion on the GRASPP weight loss pro-gramme.

)Make sure you have allyour supporting documentsready

Gatherall yoursupportingdoc-umentation so that youhave it onhand to file and can produce it ifSARS asks for it in an audit. Sup-porting documents may include:·Your IRP5 taxcertificate from

your employer· An income tax certificate

from your medical aid scheme·A list and the receipts ofmedi-

cal expenses not covered by yourmedical aid scheme· A tax certificate for your con-

tributions towards a retirementannuity fund· A detailed logbook specifying

your business trips and travelcosts for the period

) Be 100% honestIt is illegal to lie on your return

by inflating your expenses or notdeclaring your correct income.Since the inception of eFilingthere has been a substantial in-crease in random audits per-formedbySARS,accompaniedbysevere penalties for false declara-tions on tax returns. The penal-ties, interest and stress of savinga bit on your tax bill are simplynot the risk since your chance ofgetting caught out is bigger thanever.

Culture of savingsneeds a mind shiftJuly is National Savings monthinSouthAfrica, but it isworryingthat many South Africans savevery little, or nothing at all.“South Africans have a bad

track recordof savingwhichputsthem at great risk should any-thingunexpectedhappen,suchaslosing a job, this also means thatthere is nothing put away for re-tirement one day,” says EuniceSibiya, head of Consumer Educa-tion at FNB.SibiyasuggeststhatSouthAfri-

cansneedamind-shift away froma culture of spending and debt, tooneof responsibilityandsavings.“The key to saving is having fi-

nancial plans and goals, you arethe only one with control overyour own finances.“You need to know what your

short, medium and long term fi-nancial goals are. And you canwork these out by drawing up abudget and sticking to it.”A short-term goal is one that

comes up in the next couple ofmonths up to two years, such asbuying a pair of shoes, furnitureor planning a holiday.A medium term goal is one

which needs more considerationand a longer period to save, suchas deposit on a house, car or sav-ing foryourchildren’seducation.A long termgoal is themost im-

portant, such as your future re-

tirement and you need to ensureyou are putting away sufficientamount of money so that you areable to retire comfortably at anolder age.“It is not about the salary that

is earned every month, but howthat money is used to better yourfinancial position.”Budgeting is essential for day-

to-day living. However, budgeting is just as

important for saving.Sibiya says that one should

budget to save, in otherwords, in-cludeaportionofyoursalaryeve-rymonthasanitemonyourbudg-et to put away, rather than wait-ing until the end of the month tosee what is left over.Importantly, savingsneed tobe

placed in a savings vehicle, suchas a bank account where it is safeand earns interest. There are many good savings

vehicles in South Africa such assaving accounts which can be in-dividual or group or investmentaccounts like fixed deposit, mon-ey market, unit trust, govern-ment bonds and shares.Another way to save money is

to watch your monthly spendinghabits and identify areas whereyou can cut down. You can alsotry not to buy non-essential andunplanned items such as expen-sive shoes or dinners.
