Klapmusbende slaan weertoe buite StellenboschELBE VAN HEERDEN

’n Groep mans in klapmusse het vandees-weekweertoegeslaanop’nplaasindieStel-lenbosse landelike gebied.

Volgens lt.

Ideas for urban renewalIdeas for renewal in the Stellenbosch towncentre, Jonkershoek and Kayamandi, willbe highlighted at a public meeting of theHeritage Foundation Stellenbosch at 18:00onMonday12Mayat theSasolArtMuseum.

The Rhenish complex in Stellenboschtown centre, Kayamandi and Jonkershoekwere themes for workshops at the Institutefor Urban Design’s congress in Stellen-bosch.

Local and international planners, urbandesigners and architects workshopped so-lutions for renewal in these environments.

Professor Henri Comrie and master stu-dents of the University of Cape Town’sSchool of Urban Design, will summariseand present the ideas that flowed fromworkshops on Monday night at the publicmeeting.

Other topics that will be discussed brieflyat the meeting are Stellenbosch’s plannednew spatial development framework andtheproposedchangestoaccessroadstoStel-lenbosch, especially from Somerset West.

The meeting, at 17:30 for 18:00, is open toeveryone.

Munisipaliteit se finansiesuitstekend bestuurLuidens ’n onlangse studie bestuur dieStellenbosch-munisipaliteit sy finansiesuitstekend.

ting Committee) is onlangs ingestel.“Die Ouditeur-Generaal (O-G) se ver-

Stay warm this winterWinter in Cape Town is characterised byrain and wind, which for people living ininformal settlements means draughtydamphomes, flash floods anddisruption oftheir daily lives.MustadafinFoundation isa disaster relief NGO that responds to com-munities in need and offers great tips forkeeping warm, dry and safe this winter.

“We realise the impact winter has on healthand family stress. Preparing for winter doesnot have to be expensive as there are numerousways for residents to keep warm and dry withmaterials at their disposal,” explains Ghairu-nisa Johnstone, director at the MustadafinFoundation.

“Residentsininformalsettlementsshouldbeproperly informed on how to keep warm anddry during the rainy season so they can contin-ue with their daily routine.”

Mustadafin Foundation offers these easy toimplement tips to ensure the rain and cold arekept at bay during winter:

Keep dryRepair leaks in roofs before the first rains

to ensure homes remain dry inside. Remainunder shelter during a downpour and staycovered if going outside. “A lot of people getsick because they expose themselves to the wetweather without wearing waterproof clothingor covers. Even a makeshift rain poncho madeout of black bags will make a difference,” saysJohnstone.

Wear layers of clothingExpensive coats are not compulsory to be

warm during winter. Layers of clothing keepthe body’s heat trapped and can even be warm-er than a heavy thick coat. Insulate the bodywith newspapers to help keep the cold out andthe chest area warm.Remove damp clothing as soon as possibleWet clothing causes a rapid loss of body tem-

perature. Wear dry clothing to reduce the riskof a cold and to ensure better sleep at night.

Start with your feetWarm and dry feet mean a warm body.

Repair shoes and boots before the winter sea-son so that socks remain dry. “A great tip isto insulate socked feet with a plastic bag, fol-lowed by another sock, then shoes. This willkeep feet dry and warm even in the wettestweather,” comments Johnstone.

Stock up on soup and porridgeEver wondered why soup and porridge are

such old time favourites? These warm foodswarm the body from the inside out and keepthe cold at bay. The risk of hypothermia canbe reduced when people on the street have nu-tritious warm meals.

Use sandbags to keep water out of homes“People living in informal settlements can

usematerialsat theirdirectdisposal topreventflooding. A great tip is to put sandbags aroundeach home to help keep houses as dry as possi-ble,” says Johnstone.

Ventilate housesIt is important to keep a flow of air in and

out of houses, especially when using fire forheating. Unhealthy fumes can causerespiratory disease or leave sleepers uncon-scious. Smokey fumes must flow out and cleanair needs to flow back into homes.

Never leave a fire unattendedFalling asleep at the fire may sound cosy but

it is very dangerous. Fire spreads very quicklyand can cause destruction within minutes.

Ensure that no curtains or flammable textiles arenear an open flame

“We all know that accidents can happen veryquickly. Always make sure that open flamesare tended to, to prevent destruction and loss,”concludes Johnstone.

Winter is a great time to show we all careabout our fellow South Africans. MustadafinFoundation distributes warm nutritiousmeals, blankets and second hand clothing todestitute communities throughout the West-ern Cape as part of their Winter Warmth initia-tive.

New health project to improve service, moraleStellenboschHospital isoneof theWestern Cape Department ofHealth’snewprojects to empowerstaffandchangetheorganisation-al culture.

To achieve this, the Departmentappointed Ernst and Young as con-sultants to facilitate change in an in-novative way.Anexcitinggameplanhasbeende-

veloped with a league where similarinstitutions will compete againsteach other. Prize money of R60 000hasbeenset aside for eachof thewin-ning facilities. The process has been going for a

year now, and is starting to show re-sults, the Western Cape Minister ofHealth, Theuns Botha, told a mediacontingency atKhayelitshaHospital

recently. Stellenbosch Hospital isamong the current participating fa-cilities.Botha said the cost of the project

for two years is R7,62 million. “Webelieve our staff is our most impor-tant asset, and they are at the frontline of engaging with patients everyday. We realise thatwehave to equipthem with the right tools, skills andtechniques for personal develop-ment.”The purpose of the programme is

to change the organisational cultureof the Department in an innovativeway. The focus of the programme ison team work and re-enforcing theDepartment’s shared vision and val-ues. The process strives to supportstaffandofferthemskills intheirdai-lydealingswithpatients,oftenunder

very stressful circumstances. Theprogramme recognises and rewardscommitted employees for walkingthe extra mile. A good example iswhere nursing staff arranged a wed-dingreceptionat the facility fora ter-minally ill patient who was not ableto attend her son’s wedding. The aim is to help staff to relieve

stress, have fun and improve staffmorale.Theultimateaimis toputpa-tient satisfaction at the forefront, which is the vision of Healthcare2030 - patient-centred, quality care.Future interventions include

workshops for champions, groupcoaching for management develop-ment, andacompetition toaward thefacilitywhere staff is bringing tangi-ble results to the patient experience. In thismonth,an innovationsummit

will be held for facilities to generateinnovative ideas from staff on as-pects such as the dilemmas oflengthy waiting times. Surveys aredistributed every month measuringthe previous month’s progress in or-der to see trends, improvements andweaknesses that require further in-tervention.Among the expected outcomes are

a decrease in staff burn-out and ab-senteeism, which in turnwill lead toimproved staff morale, and im-proved communication betweenstaff and patients andmore satisfiedpatients. The long term objective for2030 is to transform the Departmentthrough a sustainable change man-agement strategy into an organisa-tion of which staff and patients willbe proud. Botha said he was encour-

aged by the manner in which the fa-cilitymanagersandtheir teamshaveembraced the Change ManagementProgramme, despite their heavyworkloads on a daily basis. “But thepositive effect on the patient experi-ence will only become visible in thelonger term.” A total of 38 of the De-partment’s facilities across the prov-ince were selected for the first phaseof the organisational change project.TheDepartmenthasdecided to focuson the District Health Servicewheremore than 90% of patients are seen. This means the participating facili-ties comprise a total number of 6 000of the Department’s 32 000 employ-ees. TheDepartmentwill review theproject at each stage, adapt wherenecessary and expand it to covermore facilities over time.
