To marry here, at least one party to the marriage should be an active parishioner, regularly attending Mass for one year before asking to schedule a wedding. As Catholics, we believe that God has a plan for marriage. Cohabitation before marriage is not part of God’s plan and decreases the chances of success in maintaining a permanent union. Cohabitating couples should separate and live apart before requesting the Sacrament of Matrimony. More information is available from the parish office regarding guidelines for weddings and parishioner status. Diocesan policy requires at least six months’ notice before setting a wedding date. SACRAMENTAL POLICY In order to receive First Holy Communion or Confirmation, students in Grades 2 and 8 must attend TWO FULL YEARS of religious instructions if they are NOT in our Catholic School system. No more than THREE (3) classes can be missed during the year of sacramental preparation. The facilities and services of Stella Maris Parish are available to its active members. This includes use of the Church for Baptisms, Weddings, and other sacramental events and includes parishioner status in our parochial schools. Active membership is determined by three things: being registered in the parish for a sufficient period of time, faithful attendance at Mass on Sundays and Holy Days, and the use of the envelope system in support of the parish. N.B. If you are attending Stella Maris but not receiving envelopes, then you are not registered. Please call the Parish Office for registration information. FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK My dear people, It’s November, the month of the dead in Catholic piety, and we will be busy. This Monday, November 5, is the Monday within the Octave of All Souls’ Day in the traditional calendar. We will celebrate our All Souls’ Latin Requiem High Mass at 6:30 P.M. The Requiem is one of the most beautiful of the Latin Masses and we are graced to have the music of the Faure Requiem to add to the beauty of the rite. At about 6:15, I will begin to read the names of your loved ones who have died since last year’s All Souls’ Day. If you have not yet done so, you have until 10:00 A.M. Nov. 5 to submit names on the cards provided. Those who submit names are expected to attend the Mass. Following the Mass, we have a covered dish supper. If you plan to participate, please let Tina Jost know what you plan to bring (843-452.1731 or [email protected]). All Latin Mass altar servers, please note our practice is tonight (Sunday, Nov. 4) after the Latin Mass.

This Tuesday is Election Day. I don’t know when I’ve seen a mid-term election generate so much interest. It is especially poignant as we are less than a week from Veterans’ Day when we honor those who have served to defend our rights including the precious right to vote.

This coming Sunday, Fr. Antony and I will mix up our Mass schedule to allow me to preside at the Commemoration of the Centennial of the Armistice ending WWI in the park across the street from the church. I will take the 8:00 A.M. & 9:30 in the church and Father will take the 9:30 in the hall and the 11:30. While this is a parish event, we invite the general public to join us. Weeks ago, after talking with local people interested in history and heritage, I realized no one had plans to mark the centennial. Our parishioner, Marion Keenan, is among those honored in the park. I sought permission from the Town to conduct a wreath-laying ceremony and am pleased at the interest people have shown. Our Sunday School teachers have been invited to bring their classes over to the park if they think they can afford to miss a class. Parents of children in Sunday School are invited to walk over as well. We hope to begin around 10:45 and end by 11:15. The relatives of Marion Keenan are invited to stand together as a group. Our bells will toll in conjunction with the national Bells of Peace initiative on the 100th anniversary of the end of fighting at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.
