The aim is to strengthen, promote and develop collaboration between contemporary artists in north of Norway and artists from the rest of Norway and abroad.

Who can applyThe residency is open to professional artists of all fields: visual artists, writers, curators, craft artists, writers, film directors, film makers, dancers, choreographers, stage performers, performance artists, composers, musicians, audio and new media artists.

What Steigen AIR can offerThe Art center TARE is owned by a cultural foundation and contains 3 studios.Studio 1 is used by the artist Line Hvoslef, based in Bergen and Steigen .Studio 2 and 3 is offered for free to visiting artists for a period from 4 to 12 weeks.

Each studio includes a bedroom and as a visitor you have access to a shared bath, kitchen and living room.

The art scene in Steigen is neither big nor especially vibrant, but the local artist is connected to the art center Tare in different ways.

The activity in TARE changes during the year. The period from May till September is the most hectic period, but the activity drops to a minimum during wintertime.

From September till May you cannot expect an artist-run/idealistic environment in the house. But this period will be a good time for concentration, inspiration and production.

So a stay at TARE might be best for those who want to find peace, to concentrate and get inspired by nature!

What does the residency demand of the visiting artist

All expenses (other than studio and accommodation) such as living costs, travel, materials, insurance and transport must be covered by the artist. The artist may apply for possible funding from her / his own home country.

The selected artist must be prepared to be quite self-reliant. We are running the residency on tight administrative resources. However we are doing our best to set up contacts and network, and the artists in Steigen are very open-minded and friendly.

The residence artists are free to use their time at their own disposal, but we encourage them to contribute to the local environment – either through exhibitions at a later time or workshops/artist talk during the stay.

The visiting artist must speak and write English.

ApplicationThe application must be based on the application form, project proposal for the residency period and artist statement, updated cv, documentation of work. Current work is requested. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

For the period from March – November next year the deadline for applications is January 15.

On your request by mail [email protected], we will send you a copy of the application form.

Please note our aim in your application process: “The aim is to strengthen, promote and develop a collabora-tion between contemporary artists in North of Norway and artists in rest of Norway and abroad.”

We prefer the application to be sent by mail to [email protected] limit your documentation to maximum 5 MB. If you are sending video material, please refer to down-loading sites like Vimeo, YouTube etc.

HOW TO GET HERESteigen is a small community in the rural areas in north of Norway with less than 2500 inhabitants. The main village is Leinesfjord where the Art Center is situated. Traditional the living in Steigen has been based on fisheries and agriculture, but today aquaculture and tourism is fast growing businesses.

You may come by car, but remember that the distance from Oslo to Steigen is 1320 km, so we recommend transport by plane or train to Bodø. Coming from abroad, you will most likely have to go through Oslo. It is only a 20 minute WALK from the airport, and even shorter from the railway station, to Sentrumsterminalen in Hålogalandsgata. There you will find a bus or catamaran to Steigen.

CatamaranEvery day at 5.15 pm (6 pm fridays and 8.30 pm Sundays), the catamaran leaves for Svolvær, but passes three different stops in Steigen:

- By a boat ticket in the terminal building to Helnessund (60 minute trip)

Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday you will find a bus on the pear.

- By a ticket to Leinesfjord (34 minute trip)

Someone will meet you at the bus stop in Leinesfjord and wish you welcome to the Art Center.

If you arrive another day we can find someone to pick you up in Helnessund.

BusEvery day at 5.30 the bus leave to Narvik:

- By a bus ticket in the terminal building to Leinesfjord (3 hours trip)

Someone will meet you at the bus stop in Leinesfjord and wish you welcome to the Art Center.
