2011

• Over all Aim = 15-20% reduction (Public purse not design fees)

• New models of procurement

• Building Information Modelling

• Soft Landings

• Lean Procurement

A year on..

2012

• Digital exchange format COBie UK 2012

• BIM-enabled plans of work are being prepared

• Legal, commercial and insurance protocols for BIM are nearing completion.

• PAS 1192-2:2012

• Links forged for public-private sector collaborations

• National BIM standard.

• Network of regional BIM hubs

• BIM Task force microsite set up.

Two dee?!

• Buildings modelled rather than drawn

•Decisions made at earlier stage

•Greater opportunities for coordination and collaboration for CDM-C

BIM opportunities for H&S

Model Checkers and automation Design authoring tools

4D Modelling Virtual prototyping/Simulation

National BIM Library

Vinci Construction Tottenham Court Road Station

Solibri model checking software

Railing prototyping in Tekla

Page 21: Stefan Mordue - BIM Health and Safety and the CDMC

Model Checkers & Automation

• Ability to eliminate hazards diminishes at project progresses.

Singapore CORENET e-Plan check software

• Opportunity to eliminate hazards before they appear on site during planning stages.

• BIM allows use opportunity to use 3D information and schedules to visualise hazard.

• Already used for ‘clash detection, fire exits and American disabilities act requirements.

• Produce non compliance report.

• Still requires human intervention.

Page 22: Stefan Mordue - BIM Health and Safety and the CDMC

Automated rule-based system for fall protection

• Detects holes in slab, walls and slab edges

Source: Integrating BIM & Safety: An automated Rule-based checking system for safety planning and simulation

• Installs guard rails where appropriate

• Protection system quantity take off

• Updates schedules

• Creates 4D visualisation

Solibri

Model Viewer brings BIM files from all IFC compatible software products in a single environment.

Quality Assurance, Identify potential issues and design flaws in the BIM files according to predefined rules and/or building codes

Quantity Take Off, Automatically check what is in the BIM files. Create bill of materials or do cost calculation.

Presentation and Reports, create presentations and reports from BIM files. Communicate in 3D, documents or PDF issues or design flaws to any party

Page 24: Stefan Mordue - BIM Health and Safety and the CDMC

Whats in an object?

Industry Foundation Classes Parameters (IFC) • Interoperability between AEC software applications.

Construction Operations Building information exchange (COBie) • Information relating to CDM and H&S operations of facility • Advice taken from Nick Nisbet

National BIM Library Parameters • Maintained and developed • Consistent set of attributes across all objects • Version control and issue date • Uniclass title, section/clause

Page 25: Stefan Mordue - BIM Health and Safety and the CDMC

Graphical data

• Sizes, shapes & areas. • Manipulation of object •Relationship to other objects.

•Implement or manufacture a product? • Service zones

Dimensions Parametric Clearance

Page 26: Stefan Mordue - BIM Health and Safety and the CDMC

Non graphical information

• Trade name/ Model number

• Most important non graphical information

Identification Information

Performance Information

Installation Information

Maintenance, H&S Information

• Hyperlinks to reference information

• Defines product by its outputs,

• Needs consistent approach E.g. U factor, U-Factor & U value

• Not practical/necessary for step by step instructions,

•Link back to manufactures data

• Components require either maintenance or replacement.

• Need to leverage this information out

Page 27: Stefan Mordue - BIM Health and Safety and the CDMC

Generic to proprietary objects

•Missed opportunity!

• Objects support workflow

Generic Installed Proprietary

Workflow

• Disconnect between BIM and specifier

• Opportunities to add standardized hazards and risks

• Opportunity to test manufactures products

Page 28: Stefan Mordue - BIM Health and Safety and the CDMC

Exploitation of BIM information displays for construction site safety communication.

• Up to date views of model

• safety observations

• Accident or near-miss reports

• Safety issues that need improvement

• 3D site plan

Exploitation of BIM information displays for construction site safety communication

Page 29: Stefan Mordue - BIM Health and Safety and the CDMC

Simulation

• Ultra wideband (UWB) system tested

Real-time Automated Construction Worker location tracking

• Simulate process and material distributions?

• On site clashes and crashes?

• Check clearance and best routes?

Page 30: Stefan Mordue - BIM Health and Safety and the CDMC

4 D modelling tools

•Site layout including temporary facilities

• Visualisation of crane reach

• Visualisation of crane collapse

BIM-based Safety Management and Communication for Building Construction

Page 31: Stefan Mordue - BIM Health and Safety and the CDMC

Good and bad

•BIM is mature but in the US. UK at the start of our journey

•BIM will easily do the "policeman/compliance role“ a threat?

•Just because we have it doesn’t mean its right, need to check it

• Useable format for end user

• Reduction in soft skills

• BIM Allows CDM-C to start early in process

• Opportunity to co-ordinate the team

• New ways for CDM-C obtain and distribute info

• Simulate accident hot spots

Page 32: Stefan Mordue - BIM Health and Safety and the CDMC

Need for change, final thought...

• 1975 – Kodak builds one of the first digital cameras

• 1976 – 90% of film and 85% of camera sales in USA

• 1996 - $16billion revenue

…But then… • 2012 – file for bankruptcy protection
