1. TENEMENT HOUSING in XIXth-century downtown of Łódz

functional scheme

This project is my engineer graduation work which purpose is modern infill building proposal, that contributes to revitalization of an old town of Łódz, by completing its historic structure. The project is an attempt to find har-mony combining modern functional housing object and a spirit of a historic tenement building type - one that created an urban image of a city of Łódz. The building is located in the western part of historic city center, in 1 maja str. 17. between two tenement houses built in style of Art Nouveau and early moernism. The projected building has five floors with 14 apartments and commercial spaces including an art gallery, an artist studio, and a doctor’s office. There is a gate in the front part of the building connecting 1 maja street and an atrium designed in order to provide a recreational space to the inhabitants. That includes plants, benches and a sandpit. A biologically active surface is added in form of a green roof available for the residents.

BYSTRZYCA

In the last few years Zmigród Street in Lublin (previously considered to be dangerous) started attracting artists and social organisations func-tioning in the backyards of existing tenement buildings. This movement began a forming process of an informal and independent cultural area, yet invisible at a glance. The most significant for the development of a street is ‘Dom Słów’ (House of Words) organisation – an educational institution popularizing readership. Thanks to its activity the street has be-come a pedestrian precinct that made it a good playground for children and a place for occasional events. No trace of such an activity is visible on the street every day. In order to discover that, one must step into the backyards, not being encouraged by the neighbourhood’s reputation.

The main aim of the project is a revitalisation of the street by creating a ‘trail’ connecting buildings’ backyards and by gathering artistic and educational initiatives, also setting up a group of new public-utility buildings. The idea is to support and to develop the existing organi-sations and to create a kind of culture center of this part of the city. The connection is going take a shape of a ‘fluid’ path made of co-loured gum. The flexibility of this material makes it safe for the users and able to take various shapes. Th ere are public utility objects proposed for every backyard with functional and educational functions. The second part of the project is a proposal of series of buildings, that would regulate the street’s frontage and forfill the loss of urban tissue.

The buildings serve as public utility such as a library, an art gallery, a hostel, or a grocery store. There is also a social garden and kitchen. The important part of a project is a reinstatement and arrangement of a sport field - an observation deck and a building that connects the function of a tribune and a roofing for a marketplace. A caffee building with a square as a foreground, invites to turn into the street and discover the world of Zmigród.

3. MUSEUM OF POLISH MUSIC

The main idea of the project is to gather all the functional space of the museum around the concert hall, which situated in the middle and given an unusual shape is somehow a heart of the organism where important events take place. Outside facades are rectengular, covered with perforated-metal panels attached to the concrete wall by ‘razors’ in the rythm of black piano keys. The interior - in contrast to an out-side view is warm-coloured and ovoid. The common space is organised around the the ‘shell’ containing the concert hall that is not clearly visible from the outside. The intention is to give a visitor a clue, that something interest-ing is there behind the rectengular, metal wall which encourages to enter the world of music.

The project proposes a house solution for an multi-genera-tional family located in Milanówek - a small town, near War-saw. The aim of a project is to find an appropriate distance between living together and keeping privacy for two parts of the family. The first part means a basic family formed by par-ents and their children, while the second can be additional two of their relatives - grandparents, an adult child and his or her partner, or cousins. The project is an attempt to make the family members feel both cooperative and independent.

Two parts of the house share a common hall connect-ing basic house, additional apartament, a small office and a garage for two cars. This is also a place for a sculpture visible from outside. The terraces of the apartaments are independent, having a view of diffrent parts of the garden but they are easy to communicate between each other.

The house facade material is a brown brick and the roofs are covered with metal panels. The idea of shape is in-spired by modernist drawings of Theo van Doesburg and plumbs the relativity of vertical and horizontal surfaces.

5. THE MOUNTAIN HOTEL

This project presents an unusual approach to a large hotel complex. Instead of creating a single dominant building we came up with an idea of dividing it into modular segments that are intented to resemble a local village. This solution is an opportunity to fit the local context.

The hotel is situated on a hill and consists of modular houses interlinked with glazed connectors. Each contains 8 to 12 hotel rooms or 4-8 larg-er apartments. The street frontages accommodate a restaurant and wedding halls, with circulation, garage and spa zones built into the hill.

Made of local wood and stone, they are economical struc-tures, with possibilities to prefabricate some of the elements.

A large green area of the complex can be accessed from each build-ing, providing hotel guests with recreational and leisure opportunities.

6. MY ARTWORK

JAN KIELMAN - NEW WEBSITE GRAPIC DESIGN

Jan Kielman is a traditional bespoke shoemaking company run by my family in Warsaw since 1883. As the decision of refreshing the old website came, I took up the task of designing it’s structure, lay-out, taking some of the photographs and making particular drawings concerning order instructions, types of shoes etc.

LEATHER MANUFACTURING

I had a wonderful opportunity to learn about leather manufacturing by taking practise at Malton&Kielman that is a company designing and making high - end products from leather solely by hand. Spending numerous hours at the workshop and learning from the designers I learned how to construct functional products of gallantry from leather and weave of different kinds. I worked with different preparates and substances, among others mastering the process of patination of the leather. By year 2016 all by myself I manufactured two bags, two wallets, a belt and a laptop case that I use everyday.
