DescriptionThe steering wheel adapter for MSW sensors is designed to enable measurement steering wheels from Kistler to be mounted without needing custom-fabricated steering shaft adapters. Thanks to the compact dimensions of the MSW sensors, this universal adapter is simply clamped on to the steering wheel of the test vehicle.

If the test vehicle is equipped with an airbag, the airbag must be deactivated or removed before using the steering wheel adapter.

The steering wheel adapter may only be mounted and operated by authorized, qualified persons who are familiar with devices of this type. Observe the following mounting instructions to ensure correct installation of the adapter.

Local regulations may not permit the operation of motor vehicles on public highways while the steering wheel adapter is moun ted in the vehicle.

Use only original mounting equipment included in the scope of delivery, otherwise we assume no liabi-lity for any damages.

Mounting instructions

• Remove the clamp collars and the adapter flange from the supporting plate.

• Measure the inner diameter of the steering-wheel rim and set the three adjusting angles with the knurled screw on half diameter. Do this by loosening the clamp screws on the upper side of the supporting plate slightly and adjusting them as required.

• Insert the supporting plate with the adjusting angles down-ward into the steering wheel until the threaded studs fit the steering-wheel rim. This allows easy access to the set screws. Now correct the length of the angles until they are all close to the inner side of the steering-wheel rim (Fig. 1).

Fig. 3: Centering the supporting plate (e.g. using the optional stator mount for Kistler MSW sensors)

• Now attach the clamp collars laterally to the adjusting angles (Fig. 2); there are three pairs of holes for mounting the clamps. To keep the overall height as low as possible, you should preferably choose the upper mount if possible (depends on the excess height of the airbag module relative to the steering-wheel rim). In any case, all three clamps have to be mounted in the same pairs of holes, otherwise errors may occur due to tumbling of the supporting plate.

• Center the supporting plate relative to the steering-column rotation axis: control centering by means of a mark (e.g. stator mount of the MSW sensor) positioned towards the engraving in the middle of the supporting plate (Fig. 3).

• If necessary, correct by adjusting the knurled screws until the desired accuracy is achieved.

• Position the clamp collars and tighten the clamp screws on the upper side of the supporting plate (Fig. 4).

• Attach the adapter flange to the MSW sensor unit and affix it using the delivered screws (Fig. 5).

It may be necessary to remove the threaded stud(s) before you can screw the clamp collars into the upper hole. Easily damageable steering wheel mate-rials (leather, wood, etc.) must be protected with a suitable underlay to avoid damage.

• Remove the horn button (Fig. 6).

• Put the MSW unit onto the steering wheel adapter and affix it using the delivered screw nuts and washers (Fig. 7).

• Put the horn button back on the MSW unit, secure it and attach the cover (Fig. 8).

• If required, affix the optional grip bar for the stator of the MSW sensor (Fig. 9).

• Connect the MSW sensor to a data acquisition. Be sure that the cable does not contact the arms of the supporting plate when steering.
