A Visioning Trip for Guatemala Mission

Last month three leaders from John Knox traveled to Cobán, Guatemala to refreshour mission connectionsand help to discern our next steps in missionthere. Lois Bell, LaRue Wait, and GordonTurnbull left onJune 25 and returned July 4. For Lois and LaRue, the trip was a renewal ofa virtually-annual tradition of thelast decade. For me, an experienced mission traveler, itwas the first visit to Guatemala and the opportunity tosee the fruit of ourchurch’s long-standing commitment to this area.

Our group stayed with Rob and Tara Cahill, with whom our churchhas partnered for years. We lodged intheAgricology Center that many John Knox members have helped to build. Under construction nearby is asecond, largerbuilding that will offer more dorm space and a production kitchen to bringagricultural products tomarket. Weshared fully in the program life of this center, seeing firsthand itsfully-developed vision ofcommunity development.

What else did we do? Weconnected with the students, teachers, and parents of Chirreomax, the“MountainSchool” that has received great support and encouragement from John Knox. We worshipped withthe Presbyterian Church inCobán and visitedwith its leaders, Phillip and Bacilia Beisswenger, who aremission partnersfrom the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). Wevisited Sanimtacá,a remote mountain village, todeliver for installation a solar panel for itselementary school. And in hundreds ofindividual encounters, wetranscended the barriers of culture and language toexpress the love of God that unites us and that has fueledthe mission of JohnKnox Presbyterian Church in Guatemala for over a decade.

In the next few weeks you can read more fully in the SteepleTalk about some particularaspects of this year’strip. We lookforward to sharing more about this experience and our sense of God’s call forour church’sGuatamala mission in the future. Thanks for the privilege of representing you in this meaningful way.

Our Senior Highs had awonderful trip toMontreat! Under the theme of “A World ofDifference”, ouryouth were challenged to thinkabout how to be true to themselves whilealsomaking a difference among their peers, intheir communities and out in ourworld.

Our Junior Highs will be returning fromThornwell on Thursday. They have done someamazing work around the campus, includingpainting a chicken coop, cleaning and setting upa building for a new preschool, weeding thegrounds, and spreading mulch. They have alsospent devotional time discerning the importanceof the work they are doing, and how it fits intotheir own faith journey. They were reminded ofhow to be present to the goodness that Godmakes available to us all. We are so thankful forthese times for our youth to experience andspread the love of God.
