THE POLAR VORTEX?HA – A FEEBLE PHENOMENON COMPARED TO THE FISHING VORTEX.

SCIENCE, HAVING PUT ITSELF TO TASK to explainthe innermost workings of the universe, has thankfullyturned its attention to fishing. Now we simple anglers are free to use words like thorax, salinity and fulcrum. Make no mistake, employing technical terms in your quest to fish as much as possible isn’t just good thinking –it’s scientifically proven to sound more official. Remember, you’re not just fishing – you’re conducting fisheriesresearch for the common good.

If you ever find yourself in Park Falls, make sure to stop by our rod-building facility. You’re more than welcome to watch some of the impressiveprocesses that go into making a St. Croix rod so special. Chances are you’ll not only gain a profound appreciation for what actually goes into

making a St. Croix rod, but you will be inspired to go out and fish. Now.

Exactly how hard is it to come to work each morning and surround yourself with

fishing tackle? Rods, reels, hats, gear. Could be worse, that’s for sure. Which might go

a long way in explaining why for over 65 years, St. Croix has emerged as America’s

largest manufacturer of premium-quality fishing rods. Our position has been earned

by a very unique set of variables:

v St. Croix is family owned and managed.

v St. Croix has a strong heritage of USA manufacturing.

v St. Croix, with our two state-of-the-art rod factories, controls every aspect of the rod making process. We don't rely on contract manufacturers to build our rods.

From conception to inspection – through unmatched customer service – the focus remains

the same: TO BUILD THE BEST RODS ON EARTH.

SOME FAMILIES HAVE POLITICS OR INVESTMENTBANKING IN THEIR BLOOD, TOO BAD FOR THEM.

We are always pushing the outer limits of new manufacturing technologies. We use the latest in CNC (Computer Numerical Control) technology to turnour own aluminum and plastic trim pieces, windchecks, shims and other rod components. This allowsus to tightly control the precision and quality of everypart while increasing efficiency in our work flow. It’s about as high-tech as you can get – and producesa better, more consistent product, every time.

MANUFACTURING

IPC,® ART,™ TET, FRS and the many other design and manufacturing technologies and protocols that go into building the most advanced fishing rods on earth didn’t come about by accident – or by trial and error. We use sophisticated CAD programs like 3D Solidworks in thedesign and modeling of every rod, handle and custom component part to achieve the ultimate level of precision.

It takes experience, dedication and talent to handcraft a premium-performance fishing rod, and St. Croix’s team of expert rod builders are the best in the business. It takes over 30 pairs of hands to completethree-dozen different steps in the manufacturing, assembly and finishing of a St. Croix rod. Whether that takes place at our headquarters in Park Falls, Wisconsin – or our state-of-the-art factory in Fresnillo, Mexico – each rod is a product of the passion and attention to detail of the talented people who make them.

After several years of R&D and testing,

St. Croix has perfected an innovative new

Taper Enhancement Technology (TET) that

begins with precision-cut, curved blank

patterns made possible by a state-of-the-art

computerized pattern cutting machine.

When combined with IPC-mandrels, these

unique patterns create blanks with better

actions and improved sensitivity. This

pattern design and cutting technology is

a dramatic departure from traditional

straight-line patterns cut by hand. TET is

featured in Legend Xtreme and Legend

Xtreme Inshore.

Developed exclusively by St. Croix, Integrated Poly Curve®

(IPC®) tooling technology has rapidly become the engineering leader in rodmaking. Designed to eliminateall transitional points in the rod blank, IPC-engineeredrods feature smoother actions, increased strength and greater sensitivity.

ART™ layers

ART™ is an exotic carbon fiber material that adds amagnitude (10X) of strength with virtually no increasein blank diameter or rod weight.

IPC® blanks have a moreuniform wall thicknessfrom tip to butt

Non-IPC® blanks have distinct transition points

IPC® blankNon-IPC® blank

When you set out to uncover what makes a St. Croix different from other rods, you need to look no further than the engineer sitting right beside therod designer. It’s a partnership that’s produced such breakthroughs as St. Croix’s exclusive Integrated Poly Curve® and Advanced ReinforcingTechnology.™ Rod performance is only as good as the design behind it – so before we even think about sending a rod through for production, wespend as much time as necessary in the design department to ensure that every St. Croix rod is engineered and developed to outperform all others.

Integrated Poly Curve® (IPC®) Technology

Illustration above is an exaggeration to demonstrate the difference between IPC and non-IPC blanks.

Advanced ReinforcingTechnology™ (ART™) Taper Enhancement

Technology

Introduced in 2013, St. Croix has broken new ground in premium rod manufacturing technology with the development of our Fortified Resin System (FRS), which combinesa fortified super resin with new computer operated curing ovens that provide improved temperature and time management through all stages of the curing cycle. FRSprevents microbuckling by keeping the carbon fibers in proper alignment. Blanks manufactured using this advanced manufacturing protocol test out consistently to be33% stronger than those built with standard resins and curing methods. Rod series manufactured with FRS include LegendXtreme, Legend Elite, Legend TournamentBass/Walleye/Musky, LegendXtreme Inshore, Legend Inshore, Legend Surf, Legend Salt, Legend X, Bank Robber, High Stick Drifter – and the new Legend Trek.

Fortified ResinSystem

Advanced Reinforcing Technology™ (ART™) is an exotic carbon fibermaterial that adds a magnitude (10X) of strength with virtuallyno increase in blank diameter or weight. ART significantly improvesthe hoop strength of the blank by preventing it from deformingor “ovaling” under a severe load, such as a powerful hook set.ART is also a critical part of our slim-profile ferrule design.

If there is any one thing that we’re most proud ofhere at St. Croix, it’s our service. Nowhere else willyou find such dedication to fishermen. Becausewhen you invest in a St. Croix rod, we believe youalso invest in a relationship with us. And we’ll doeverything possible to ensure your complete satisfaction. We stand by our craftsmanship withsome of the finest warranties in the business.

Service and warranty policies:

The“Action” of a rod is determined by where a rod flexes along the blank. Faster action rods flex mostly

near the tip.Moderate actionrods flex morenear the middle of the blank.Slower action rods flex downinto the butt section.

The “Power” of a rod refers to how much pressure it takes to flex the rod. Different rod powers areengineered to efficiently handle a certain range of lure

weights and line sizes. To select a rod power thatwill perform best for you, simply narrow your choicesto rods designed to castthe weight of lures – andsizes of lines – you’ll fishwith most often.

Jean-Paul Sartre once said, “Hell is other people.” We’ve said it before, but anyone who hated crowds that much must have been a fisherman. One who probably hadhis perfect morning ruined by some guy motoring right up to his quiet spot on thelake and taking a swim. We’re pretty sure Sartre would have been a fan of ourLegend Elite® series, as well. Loaded with technological advances, SCV and SCVI

graphite as well as ART,™ IPC® and FRS – these are the real deal – thoughtful rodsfor thoughtful fishermen. You could even think of them as the LegendXtreme’s quietcousin thanks to the classic forest green pearl finish and traditional cork handles.

SCIENCE MAY HAVE A DIFFERENT DEFINITION, BUT IN THE WORLD OF FISHING, WE HAVE OUR OWN IDEA OF WHAT MAKES A FREE RADICAL.Words and terms can get pretty twisted in this day and age. Sometimes it’s best tojust break things down to basics. “Free” means able to go fishing instead of beingbound by the shackles of responsibility. “Radical” typically refers to a rod like the brandnew Avid X. A dramatic new look at our popular Avid Series,® these rods feature classic SC III graphite blanks with IPC® tooling technology, cork split-grip handlesand Kigan’s advanced micro-guide platform that reduces weight while maintainingoptimum line flow efficiency. There you go. That wasn’t so complicated after all.

One person’s crazy is another person’s deeply devoted. By the same token, one person’s paranoia is simply another person’s resource protection. There is little roomfor interpretation when it comes to our Rage series rods, however. No one can denythese are perfectly balanced SC III graphite rods with IPC® technology. Okay, there is the not-so-mainstream thinking represented by the machined-core, neoprene-covered handle and the combination of premium Pac Bay Minima micro guides witha small stripper guide for casting precision, but that’s not exactly crazy. Or is it?

Judged on effectiveness, we’re guessing the leech-to-walleye size formula is some-thing like a 1:1 ratio. So dig deep, sailor and find the one that will make a difference. Then send that sucker out there via an Eyecon® rod. These are, after all, the samerods that won the Field & Stream 2011 Best of the Best award for spinning rods.Eyecons are built on SC II graphite blanks with technique-specific actions for justabout any walleye fishing scenario – including trolling. Every rod in the series delivers the dialed-in performance walleye anglers crave.

When the word gets out that you’re heading to the lake for the day, there’s nothing as convincing as a dose of complicated math to ward off any opposition.Sometimes all it takes is using “logarithm” in a sentence, and you’re free toreach right for a St. Croix® Triumph® rod and head out. Made with SC II graphiteand available in a variety of styles, Triumph rods deliver more value per castthan any other rod going, making both your money and time well spent. And yes, there’s a formula you can use for that too.

Your perspective wasaltered, and suddenly the repetition of modernlife lost its luster. A car became nothing morethan a way to get to the water. What you worefishing constituted a wardrobe. A can of sardines, crackers and acold beverage enjoyed right there in the boat, for example. They’re the perfectaccompaniment to a day spent with a St. Croix® Avid Inshore rod. With IPC®

combined with high-modulus SC III graphite blanks on all 22 models, these offera solid foundation for a wide variety of species. Add zirconium guides with 316stainless-steel frames for superior saltwater corrosion protection – and you’re looking at a tasty scenario.

A recent study conducted by a few guys down at the pier found that anglersare indeed model physical specimens. Perhaps not as model as Avid Surf rods, but still pretty good. It is a tough comparison as we’re talking about eleven different lightweight powerhouses – each targeted to a specific style of obsessedsurf angler. With a sweet, red metallic SC III blank featuring IPC,® the Avid Surfcasts like a dream – all day without tiring. Premium Fuji® K-Series guides topit all off. Like we said, pretty tough competition.

Our planet is going through a shift at the moment, and the effects have beendramatic. One of these is a warming trend that has effectively put morewater into the oceans. From the perspective of a saltwater angler, this maynot be all bad. Of course, confirming these theories might require some workwith St. Croix® Legend® Salt rods. Amped-up with our very own IPC® toolingtechnology and strengthened internally with ART,™ these rods are a valuabletool in conducting ongoing oceanic research. Carry on.

SCIENCE STILL CAN’T EXPLAIN WHY SALMON TAKE A FLY. HECK, IT CAN’T EVEN EXPLAIN HOW A BICYCLE WORKS.

Page 71: STC 2015 Catalog

MIGHTY MINDS HAVE DEVOTED THEIR ENERGIES toanswering nature’s greatest questions. For the most part, this isgood. But still, a little mystery is not to be feared. It’s okay for asalmon that has come in from years in the ocean, found itshome river and is now dancing at the end of your line to stayin the category of magic. Or trout slowly rising to the surfaceand slurping in a mayfly can simply be described as amazing. There’s no need to get bogged down in the scientific reasonswhy these things are the way they are. If you really want to getall “technical” – it’s probably best to keep it confined todescribing the following selection of St. Croix® fly rods.

When we asked Kelly Galloup to design his dream rod, we knew it would be awild ride. Next thing you know we’re producing these babies. The Bank Robber, theultimate streamer fishing rod for chucking big, weighted flies effortlessly with theprecision of a Tomahawk missile. And the High Stick Drifter – with a special light-weight tip – offers today’s advanced nymph fishermen superb sensitivity and control without the fatigue associated with holding the rod high for long periods oftime. Both series lead the way in their categories – it’s a wonder they’re even legal.

St. Croix’s Legend Gold and Silver ice rods feature apatented built-in strike indicator system developed byGreg “The Prowler” Wilczynski. A medalist in world icefishing competitions, Greg spent years refining hisinvention. The super-finesse coil spring is much moresensitive than any other type of indicator. It allows iceanglers to see the most subtle bump or strike wellbefore it can be felt.

ICE ROD STRIKE INDICATOR SYSTEM – HOW IT WORKS:

St. Croix’s strike indicator system is adjustable, so its sensitivity level can accommodate different lure sizes. To make the bobber more sensitive, push the spring forward through the grommet. To make it less sensitive, push it back. (illustration no. 1)

The system is most sensitive when there is a 30-degree bend(position 2) in the spring. To find the bottom, lower the jiguntil the indicator returns to position 1. Then, either slowlyreel up once or lift the rod slightly until the indicator is backto position 2. (illustration no. 2)
