Get crafty!

Mother’s Day is on

April 3rd this year,

which is rather later

than usual, so we

have a fair amount of warning! Mums

like nothing better than stuff their

kids have made for them, so here’s an

easy-to-make extra special Mother’s

Day card just for her. So dads and kids,

get out the glue – here’s how to go about

pleasing that special person…

For MotHer’s dAy...

you will need • 2 x A5 sheets of coloured card in

‘fl ower’ colours of your choice – pink,

purple, yellow etc.

• 1 x A5 sheet of green card or a green

pipe cleaner

• Family photos that are OK to cut out

• Scissors (kids – take care and get an

adult to help!)

• PVA glue

• Silver or gold glitter

• A6 coloured envelope (if required)

All materials are available from

good craft shops or stationers.

now do tHis...1. Take one A5 sheet and fold it in half.

This is the base for your card.

2. Take the other A5 sheet and cut it

in half. Cut a simple fl ower shape, as

big as possible, from one half. Glue it

in the centre on the front of the card.

3. Find a photo of the child who the

card is from. Cut out the face in a

circle shape to fi t in the middle of

your fl ower. Glue it in place.

4. Glue a strip of green card or pipe

cleaner to make a stalk.…A5. When the pieces are dry, use glitter

pens or glitter glue to delineate the

outer edge of the fl ower shape for

some extra Mother’s Day sparkle!

Plenty of choice at evernden Cycles

C ycling is an

enjoyable, healthy

and cheap activity

for all the family

– once you’ve made your initial

purchases. But if you’re a novice,

what kind of bikes should you

choose? Staying In & Going Out

magazine spoke to Tony Evernden

of Evernden Cycles in Paddock

Wood about how to get started –

and how to get your kids on bikes.

tony’s FAQsWhat’s the fi rst thing to think

about before buying a bike?

People should fi rst think where

the bicycle is to be used and for

what purpose. With so much

choice on styles and suitability,

this is very important. For

example, if a customer wants to

commute on a bicycle during the

week and use it for leisure at the

weekends, it would be no good

buying a road (racing) bike. A

hybrid would be more suitable. A

good independent retailer will ask

all the right questions.

Our advice is to never buy

a bicycle in a box. This is a

road going vehicle and needs

professional set-up using the

correct tools. Most quality

independent retailers only sell

fully-assembled bicycles and

offer a free 8-10 week service. The

independent retailer then has the

knowledge and the experience to

look after the bike for years to come.

How do you choose the right model?

You need to decide how much you

are willing to spend and whether

this includes any kit or add-ons.

Once a budget has been set, then we

can guide you to a range of suitable

products. We would get the sizing

correct and then once we have

narrowed the choice to a few models,

we would always suggest a test ride.

In our opinion, a test ride is essential.

A good retailer can always change

parts on a bicycle to obtain a more

comfortable fi t.

There’s a huge range of saddles

available. How do you decide what

to go for?

Saddles, the age-old question. It’s

a personal thing because what is

comfortable for one is not always for

the other. Often you need to ride for

a few miles on a saddle to know how

it suits. A lot of problems in this area

are caused by clothing and not by

the saddle. Heavy seams in garments

like jeans can be a major cause of

discomfort. Best advice is to get some

cycling shorts!

ASK THE EXPERT!

Should

bike owners

consider regular

servicing?

Maintaining a bicycle is very

important for safety and also ride

quality. A well maintained bicycle,

regularly cleaned and lubricated,

will last longer too. We would

recommend an annual service on a

bicycle getting regular use.

Can you recommend any great

local rides?

We are very lucky in the South East.

We have some really good family

rides at Bedgebury, the Cuckoo

Trail, the Crab and Winkle Trail,

and Tonbridge to Penshurst to name

but a few. We also have the Downs,

Bedgebury and Bewl Water for the

mountain biker. There are some

good clubs for the serious

cyclist: San Fairy

Ann, Southborough

Wheelers and the

recently formed Kent Velo Girls,

which now also has a fl edgling Kent

Velo Boys section.

What if you’ve got very small

children?

Introducing kids to cycling has

never been easier. From 10 months

old children can be carried in child

seats on the back of bikes, and there

are also trailers and trailer bikes.

We have noticed an increase in sales

of these products and many parents

are using them to carry the kids to

nursery school, shopping and to

friends rather than using the car.

Would you recommend trying a

child on a balance bike?

Balance bikes have been in Europe

for years, but have taken some

time to catch on in the UK. These

are bicycles without pedals and

a small child scoots them along

to achieve the balance aspect of

cycling. Children who are started

on balance bikes seldom have to

rely on stabilisers.

What if parents don’t want a

‘basket and tassels’ bike for

their child?

Many manufacturers are going

away from the ‘basket with tassels’

style. But remember that we should

not always be put off by this kind of

bike – the aim above all is to get the

kids cycling. However, quality brands

with slightly higher price points do

offer alloy frames, with better brakes

and components in unisex colours.

And how do you go about making

sure the bike fi ts the kid?

The child really needs to come into

the shop and sit on a few bikes. The

cycle needs to fi t now but also have

some growing room. Usually you

can expect 2-3 years growth out of a

correctly fi tting bike. If it is a surprise

present, the inside leg measurement

is a guide and a good retailer will

always exchange or check the size

once the present has been received.

The West end's Paul nicholas

Everybody loves a good

ghost story – and Charles

Dickens was certainly

a lover of spooky tales,

both as a reader and a writer. One of

the most famous ghost stories ever, A

Christmas Carol, came from his pen

but he was also the author of many

short ghost stories, such as The Signal

Man, The Chimes and The Haunted

House. Dickens also included ghostly

episodes in many of his well-known

novels, for instance there are fi ve in

Pickwick Papers alone.

One could argue that nowadays we

are out of the habit of reading long,

Victorian novels, because one has to

commit time and patience to reading

them, which is something we are

often short of. However, the richness

and complexity of Dickens’ plots and

characters are well worth the effort. To

get you in the spooky mood, we leave

you with a quote from The Chimes:

“For the night-wind has a dismal

trick of wandering round and round a

building of that sort, and moaning as

it goes; and of trying, with its unseen

hand, the windows and the doors; and

seeking out some crevices by which to

enter. And when it has got in; as one

not fi nding what it seeks, whatever

that may be, it wails and howls to

issue forth again: and not content

with stalking through the aisles, and

gliding round and round the pillars,

and tempting the deep organ, soars

up to the roof, and strives to rend the

rafters: then

fl ings itself

despairingly

upon the

stones below,

and passes,

muttering, into

the vaults.”

Bedgebury Forest near Goudhurst is

an amazing destination for families,

walkers and cyclists alike. The

forest covers 2,000 acres of land,

which also includes the National Pinetum. For

cyclists, there are 12km of full-on single-

track mountain bike trails, plus 10km of

more gentle, surfaced trails, suitable for

all the family. And if you just want a

stroll and then hang around in the kids'

playground, you'll still feel the benefi t

beautifully pleasant part of the world.

THe naTional PineTumWhile you're there, don't forget to take

the most complete collection of

temperate conifers in the world,

with over 10,000 shrubs and

trees, and is an important

conservation site. The Friends of

Bedgebury Pinetum support the

Forestry Commission in their work

of looking after this important site

are being encouraged in the light of the

We all love...

Chocolate parties!

Have you ever been to

a chocolate- making

party? If not, you are

surely missing out!

Jackie Windels at Temper Temper

tells us how she got the great idea of

entertaining people with chocolate-

making, and what to expect if you

want to go along.

JacKie SayS..."I run the business by myself (with

a few additional staff) and the idea

sprang from when I had my own shop

in Tunbridge Wells and customers

would ask me how to make chocolate

and fudge at home. I decided to run

expert classes which then led into

birthday parties, hen parties etc. I

eventually sold the retail business

fi ve years ago to concentrate on the

chocolate parties. The parties are designed for both

adults and children aged 8 and over.

Each party lasts for two hours, during

which time guests will make loads of

chocolate, including moulded shapes,

lollipops, chocolate

truffl es and fl orentines,

all of which are taken

home in a hand-made

chocolate bowl.

What the guests

choose to make is

largely up to them:

kids will be happier

making chocolate

dinosaurs, while

adults may choose

something more

sophisticated. Even the youngest

children are capable of producing

amazing masterpieces, and each and

every person who comes to the parties

leaves with a giant bag full of treasure.

booked groups of 8-16 people, all the

Movie

Tunbridge Wells is soon

to be treated to it’s very

own movie première!

Starring glamour model

Keeley Hazell, Venus and the Sun

is a short comedy re-telling of the

Venus and Adonis myth. It also stars

Will Smith from The Thick of It and

Ukweli Roach, from Streetdance 3D.

The event will have the full cast

in attendance, who will then take

part in a post-screening Q&A

session. The evening also includes

the première of Billy: Thoughts of

a Substitute, starring Tunbridge

Well’s own Stephen 'Billy' Harvey.

The producer of Venus and the

Sun, local boy Andy Brunskill,

spoke to Zac:“Having met Keeley and

discovering she wanted to move into acting, I had the idea to build a fi lm around her. I knew with her star appeal we would be able to raise money and get a far bigger audience than short fi lms usually get. So I got on the phone to Reuben Grove, who was establishing himself as a great theatre writer and poet, and asked him to dream up an idea for it. Reuben went to the Boys Grammar and was a friend

To mark the release of her fi rst major

acting role, Staying In & Going Out

spoke to star Keeley Hazell about her

life and acting career.

Sg: Did you always intend to move

into fi lms?

Keeley: I've always wanted to

be an actor since I can remember; self

expression has always been a huge

part of who I am as a person. Moving

into fi lms was defi nitely my intention

when I became a model; that’s when

I had a small non-speaking role in the

movie Cashback. But after that things

changed. I was still a teenager and a

lot of bad stuff happened to me that

knocked my confi dence. Then about

two years ago I decided I can't let that

hold me back, so I enrolled in drama

school and after being there a month

or so I shot Venus and the Sun, then I

shot Like Crazy a couple months after.

It has been an incredible experience.

Sg: Like Crazy won an award at the

prestigious Sundance Film Festival a

few weeks ago. Did you go to the event?

Keeley: Unfortunately I didn't

get to go. I inattentively kept track of

the fi lm's progress online and I was

extremely happy with the outcome.

Drake Doremus (the director) is overly

passionate and talented and I am

ecstatic to have been a part of this fi lm.

Sg: Moving on to Venus and the

Sun, are you pleased with it?

Keeley: I am more then grateful

that Andy (the producer) and Reuben

(the writer) wanted to write a fi lm and

let me star in it. Someone with my

background usually doesn't get this

opportunity. I've only seen parts of

comeS To ToWn

of mine so he was willing to get stuck in. He

wrote the treatment and we were able to start building the fi lm. So, to use an Americanism, I “reached out” to other friends such as Patrick Cooke (ex-Skinners) for the website, James Brocklebank (ex-Skinners) for design and animation, Holly Godden (ex-TWGGS) for publicity, and Matt McCooey and Matt Webb (both ex-Skinners) to help raise the fi nance. Obviously some of the crew were not from Tunbridge Wells, including Adam Randall, the director, as we were always choosing the best people for the roles and the TW talent pool couldn't give us everything!

As youngsters, we used to go to MASSIVE under 18’s night at The Assembly Hall, so it was only right that we should be bringing the fi rst fi lm we made together back there!"

the fi lm as it has been put together. It

would be hard to say that I am 100%

pleased with my performance, because

as an artist, it is only natural to strive

for perfection and there is always room

for improvement. Making a short

fi lm is more complex than you would

imagine, trying to get everything you

want to say in 20 minutes without

boring or isolating the audience is a

complicated thing. We tried to make

a fi lm that was thought provoking,

compelling but also interesting and

I think we have achieved this. I hope

people enjoy it.

Sg: Can you tell us a little bit about

the character you play?

Keeley: I play a fi ctionalised

version of myself: a celebrity who

is trying to escape the burdens of

her glamorous life and solve her

problems by taking up Latin!

Sg: It’s great that the première is

in Tunbridge Wells. Are you looking

After a successful tour with

The Posies, Ken Stringfellow

re-animates his scuzz rock alter

ego for the release of The Virgins

Of Menace, with his Norwegian-

based project The Disciplines.

Zac: How and why did The

Disciplines come together?

Ken: I worked with my

bandmates' former band, Briskeby

– a very successful pop band, one

of the biggest bands in Norway.

I did a duet with their singer,

Lise, so we knew we worked well

together... we all wanted to do

something different from the

very well constructed, elaborate

music of The Posies and Briskeby.

It's good to have a raw band with

experience and maturity.

Zac: There is raw emotion and

energy when you perform on stage.

Where does it come from?

Ken: It feels good to be that

open, and give that much energy.

I like shows with little or no

separation between artist

and audience. The fl ow of

emotion is not theoretical

or intellectual at that

point... it's unstoppable.

I love to be in that

energy fi eld, it's

invigorating.

Zac: What three

words would

you use to

describe this second album,

Virgins of Menace?

Ken: Aerodynamic! Furious! Sushi!

Zac: Powerpop, a word that

has been used to describe your

music (mainly on Amazon!),

do you agree?

Ken: No! [Bleep]! Way!

Zac: You're touring soon,

including a gig at The Forum, what

do you hope to bring to the gigs?

Ken: I think more than what

we bring, it's what we will create.

And that's a collaboration between

us and who comes to see us... so it's

different every time. I look forward

to fi nding out what it's like.
