roles in a variety of TV series.
What was your first big break?
susan: I was really lucky and
got a job while I was still at drama
school. It was a whole summer season
of weekly rep at Weston-super-Mare.
I had to collect all the props and
furniture and help put up the sets as
well as playing all the juvenile leads.
The shows played from Monday
to Saturday, we rehearsed from
Tuesday, and on Sunday we changed
everything round for the next one.
Not exactly what we’d think of today
as a ‘big break’ – but it taught me all I
needed to know about the theatre.
staygO: You're married to
James Bolam and have often played
roles alongside him, such as in the
BBC detective series, New Tricks.
What's it like working together?
susan: I met Jim on The
Likely Lads and thought he was
very talented, but rather rowdy. He
thought I was a bit stuck-up. We
met again later and since then we’ve
enjoyed working together much
more! It’s just the same as working
with anyone else really.
staygO: You also played
alongside James as Great Aunt
Loretta in the hugely popular kids'
TV series Grandpa in My Pocket. Do
you enjoy playing roles for children?
Tunbridge Wells is playing the

her career and the up-coming

susan: I really like doing
children’s telly – I’ve done several
programmes over the years and
had great fun working with lots of
talented kids. And the scripts are
often better than grown-up telly!
staygO: In 2009, you were
one of five well-known British
actresses chosen to play the Queen
at different periods of her life. What
was it like playing someone so
illustrious?
susan: The Queen job came
up quite suddenly, so luckily I didn’t
have much time to worry about it. I
just wanted to catch an essence of her
and not try to do an impersonation,
and I loved it once the nerves settled.
After a few days I found myself asking
for tea etc. in quite a regal way. And I
would like to have kept the wig!
staygO: What's your Doctor
Who history?
susan: I used to watch Doctor
Who years ago, as friends were in
it. And I was once asked to play a
villain, but then the BBC got cold feet
over showing a woman shooting and
garrotting people. They recast it and
paid me off. (Times have changed,
haven’t they!) Most disappointing!
staygO: You acted in a recent
BBC series of Doctor Who audio
dramas. Can you tell us a little bit
about your character?
susan: I play Mrs Wibbsey in
AudioGo’s dramas starring Tom Baker.
She was featured early on and then I
think Paul Magrs, the writer, decided
to make her the Doctor’s housekeeper
and travelling companion. I love
playing her. She’s gives as good as she
gets with him, and they have a great
relationship. She takes time and space
... continued from cover
travel in her stride. I particularly
enjoyed her getting a little skittish
when having her portrait painted by
Toulouse Lautrec.
staygO: What's it like acting in
an audio drama, as opposed to
on screen?
susan: I’ve done a lot of radio and
it’s always fun. It’s almost the same as
telly, except you need to wear quiet
shoes, be careful turning pages and
avoid bumping the microphone!
staygO: Moving on to
The Big Blue Box,
have you been
to a convention
before and what
will you be doing
there?
susan: I’ve never
done a
convention
before so
I’ll watch the
others and see
how it’s done.
We’re doing a
question and
answer session
with the writer and the producer,
both chums. I’m almost tempted to
dress up as Mrs W!
staygO: And so we've got to
ask: who's your favourite Doctor?
susan: Who is my favourite
Doctor? Tom Baker, of course!
staygO: Finally, what's in
store for you in 2012 and do you
have any new year's resolutions?
susan: More episodes of
New Tricks are in the pipeline
for next year – and more Wibbsey,
I hope. My big interest is in wildlife
and the natural environment, so our
new year's resolution is to make our
house as ‘green’ as possible, with
solar panels and ground source
heating. The plans are already in at
county hall. And the bird boxes will
be state of the art!
staygO: Susan, thank
you – and good luck with
The Big Blue Box!

art forart's sake...
by Zac tHraves
T he bitter rawness of
January hits us and
everything slows down.
What this means in
practice is that there is very little to
report on the arts front this month. All
the theatres are recovering from their
Christmas shows and nothing really
begins to happen again until spring.
But there are a few shows and events
planned to keep the places lit up.
HOrrible HistOriesWe all want to meet people from history
but the trouble is that everyone is
dead! However, that problem can be
overcome...
At The Assembly Hall, Sleeping
Beauty makes way for children’s
(and also adults’!) favourite: Horrible
Histories live on stage! Using actors
and ground-breaking 3D special effects,
this astounding show is guaranteed to
thrill you and your children. Historical
figures and events will come alive on
stage and hover at your fingertips.
The show will include The Terrible
Tudors and The Vile Victorians; follow
events from the horrible Henries to the
tribute tO fleetwOOd macAlso, in one sensational evening of
outstanding musicianship, Rumours
of Fleetwood Mac chart the songs of
arguably the world’s first super-
group, from their inception in 1967
with Peter Green, Mick Fleetwood
and John McVie, through to the
critically-acclaimed Rumours in the
70s with Stevie Nicks and Lindsay
Buckingham, then onto their more
recent works in the 80s and 90s.
Rumours of Fleetwood Mac have
now performed their anthology
production of Fleetwood Mac
anthems to over 450,000 Mac
fans worldwide, touring with Mick
Fleetwood’s golden seal of approval.
The evening will include timeless
classics such as Black Magic

end of evil Elizabeth, hear the legends
(and the lies!) about the torturing
Tudors; find out the fate of Henry’s
headless wives and his punch up

Spanish Armada as it sails into the
audience! This sounds thrilling,
much like the hugely successful
books and indeed the television
spin-off, which recently won the 2011
British Comedy Award for best sketch

entertained as they will be educated.

mOvie rOund-uPWith six Golden Globe nominations,
I have to mention the excellent
movie The Artist, from French
director Michel Hazanavicius. This
brilliantly old-fashioned movie
has taken most of the world by
storm and is receiving rave reviews.
Shot entirely as a silent movie and
in black and white, it evokes the
Hollywood of old. I urge you to see
this wonderful movie. As yet no
dates have been set for a showing in
TW but I’m sure the Odeon won’t be
showing it, so we’ll have to rely on
our trusted Trinity instead.
Also on release are Sherlock
Holmes: Game of Shadows, starring
Robert Downey Jr. and Jude
Law. The first film was a huge hit
in 2009, though I’m sure some
Holmes purists may have gasped in
disappointed shock. I am a Holmes
purist and I loved the take on the
character; it breathed fresh life
into him and for me this is one of
the movies of the season.
Finally, I must mention
Warhorse. Directed by Steven
Spielberg and based on Michael
Morpurgo’s superb book, this is
being released in time for the
Oscars. I think no other director
could do justice to this powerful
story, but having seen the trailer it
felt a little too saccharine, with the
sweeping landscapes, lush colours
and beautiful John Williams score.
All the ingredients are there, I just
hope they're not too sweet.

ski and snowboard... in Sweden!
family friendlyOn top of all that, Sweden is well-
known for its family-friendly approach.
Children are well catered for, including
highly proficient ski schools where
the instruction takes place in fluent
English. Åre in particular has a great
reputation for being child-friendly.
There's a crèche for small children
who don't ski, plus a ski kindergarten
for three-year-olds and above. There
are also 'family hang-out' areas, where
children can play while parents relax.

of the Åreskutan mountain. It provides

At Copperhill Mountain Lodge,
the whole family can be comfortably

W hen we think of
winter holidays
in Sweden, we
probably think of
cross-country skiing – a sport that
Nordic countries are well-known
for. But did you know that there
are some excellent 'alpine' regions,
where you can ski and snowboard
with all the excitement of other
downhill resorts?
Åre: a ski ParadiseOne of the premier ski resorts in
Sweden is Åre, a former copper
mining town in operation for
over three centuries. Nowadays
people come here to enjoy the
wonderful scenery and experience
the wilderness, and it has become
an attractive location for exclusive
holiday homes.
In the winter Åre boasts a ski
system that is northern Europe's
largest downhill skiing area. There
are over 100km of ski slopes,
including something for everyone,
from the extreme skier to the
beginner. The longest slope is 6.5km
and the highest point is 1,274m.
There's also a brilliant terrain
park for boarders and if you want
to stick to tradition, there's great
cross-country skiing on numerous
prepared trails.
There's also a long season at
Åre – you can ski there well into
April as the snow is plentiful even in
springtime. In fact, because of the
far-northerly location, it's best to ski
there during the months of February,
March and April.
and ski shop. And Åre-Björnen’s
ski slope system starts just outside
the door, so you can literally ski in
and out!
Nearby, there are two
apartments in Copperhill House:
a wonderful chalet-style building
and a fantastic place to gather
with family or friends. So if you're
itching to get out on the slopes and
haven't booked yet, Sweden could
be the place for you!

drawn-out versions of earlier years.
David Tennant (apparently the

the tradition set up by all those before

their Doctors very much their own.
dOctOr wHO and tunbridge wellsTunbridge Wells has some tenuous,
but no less disingenuous, links to
the world of Doctor Who. Most of
you will know that Tom Baker was
once a resident of our town, bringing
his own air of eccentricity. He now
lives in nearby Sussex. We also have
Louise Jameson living here, who
formerly played Leela and now
acts in Doctor Who audio dramas.
She is well-known around town for

about his own personal
relationship with The Doctor...
'I first started to watch Doctor Who
during the latter years of Tom Baker’s
Fourth Doctor; it was a great time to
be introduced to the ‘who-niverse’.
Here was a character that was
childish, warm, parent-like and
alien all in one.
The years I remember the most,
though, are those of Peter Davison,
with his stick of celery in his lapel,
his cricket clothing and his assistants
Adric, Nyssa and Tegan. I actually
had a thing for Nyssa at the time;
what happened to Sarah Sutton? And

a story that has lived in my memory

to rejuvenate the character. But for
years Doctor Who was stuck in the

Eccleston. What we had there was a
complete make-over; a new Doctor,
a new Tardis, new enemies, but more
importantly, new story-structure.
That has been the biggest success of
the recent series, in my opinion. A

Mulling Over Mulled wine
Christmas is over, but there’s plenty
of chilly weather left to sample the
season’s favourite tipple – mulled
wine. Recipes for mulled wine
are many and some are as old as
the 14th century. So where do
you start? Well, Mrs Beeton in
Victorian times had some good
advice: “It is very difficult to give
the exact proportions of ingredients
like sugar and spice, as what
quantity might suit one person
would be to another quite distasteful.”
So what we think she’s saying is
‘mix it how you like it’! Traditional
ingredients include sugar, cinnamon,
cloves, nutmeg and mace – and if you
want to go Scandinavian, slosh in a
little bit of vodka!
Be Beautiful Boutique is an
online fashion & beauty
boutique that cherry-
picks the best beauty and
fashion items, including
skincare, bath products,
professional make-up, fashion
accessories and jewellery. Brands
include famous names, such as
Clarins and Prada, and products
are chosen not only for their
quality but also their effectiveness
by a team of beauty advisors and
fashion stylists. A wide range of
product selections is available,
from organic to cutting-edge
technology treatments, and
there is something for absolutely
everyone. In fact, the team at Be
Beautiful Boutique is happy to say
that if it works for them, they’re
confident it will work for you too!

T his year is the 40th
anniversary year of John
Lewis of Hungerford,
which has been designing
and making wonderful painted and
solid wood kitchens and furniture
since 1972, when founder John Lewis
established the company.
This all-British brand is busy
planning an array of celebrations
kicking off with a 40% discount
sale, exciting new paint colours and
some very special limited edition
pieces of furniture designed by John
Lewis himself.
tOP tiPsAs the hub of the modern home,
kitchens should be suited to the
needs of the whole family. Used
for a whole host of activities from
cooking to homework, entertaining
and eating, there are more demands
on this space than any other within
the home. For this reason, a well-
thought-out kitchen is essential
so Charlotte Hill-Baldwin of John
Lewis of Hungerford shares some of
her top planning tips!
lOve yOurlayOutConsider all that you
love about your current
kitchen and think how
it could be more efficient. While the
basic layout of your kitchen will dictate
which style works, think about a layout
that would suit you best – U-shaped,
open-plan, L- shaped or galley.
rules Can be brOKenDon’t get caught up
in rules for planning
a kitchen! The positioning of the
key elements should not be made
into a hard and fast rule. However,
it's most important to make sure
you have a good preparation space
between the hob and the sink,
while maximising storage space.
thinK investMentA kitchen purchase
is the same as other
high-investment spends. Look for
superior quality products. Good
cabinets made to fit your kitchen
may mean ordering bespoke units
from a specialist company; but rest
assured it will be well worth it in
the long run as your kitchen will
perfectly suit your requirements. A
good kitchen will last you a lifetime
and should work for you by making
everything as effortless
as possible.
design inPutSpeak to a good
designer to talk through your
ideas, budgets and inspiration;
their input will enable you to
think differently about the options
open to you. They will also offer
useful tips when it comes to
40TH bIRTHDAy
cELEbRATION
considering simple yet often
overlooked functions, such as having
ample space for dishwashers and
fridges to open. Do ask about the
in-house installation service and
what is involved as this will be the
last and most important part of
your purchase. A fabulous kitchen
poorly installed would be incredibly
disappointing.
Clever COlOurStyle stems from
individual taste and this
will be reflected in the colour choices
and textures as well as the type of
furniture you choose. Clever use of
colour can pull a scheme together or
help create zones if that is what you
are looking for from your new kitchen.
Mix and match colours for a fresh look
or simply inject some colour with a
glass splash back in a neutral scheme.
If you intend to sell on in the next few
years, select a more classic style.

M any people
find they are
overloaded in
their home and
working life, especially when trying
to combine raising a family with
earning a living. Stress and anxiety
can have a detrimental effect on
physical, mental and emotional
health, so we asked our expert,
Victoria Conway, for her advice.
Many people nowadays are looking
for ways to improve their wellbeing.
Why do you think that is?
There are several contributing
factors. We are much better educated
these days about the benefits of
regular exercise and healthy eating
and the adverse effects of smoking,
excessive alcohol etc. Government
health campaigns together with
the media have helped to spread
the word. There are many TV
programmes that now focus on
healthy living. Take Gillian McKeith
for example (love her or loathe
her!): you can’t deny the results she
achieved with her sometimes
reluctant TV clients. I think
we can credit her for bringing
colonic hydrotherapy to the
nation’s attention!
What warning signs
should people look
for to tell them
they're not
functioning well?
People live
with a number
of symptoms in
their everyday life
without even realising that they
are not performing at their best.
Digestive problems, excessive
tiredness, sleep problems,
headaches, irritability and loss of
libido are all warning signs that
tell us that all is not well.
If a person decides that they'd like
to try a complementary therapy
what advice would you give?
There are a huge number
of articles and books on
complementary therapies. Ask
friends and family to see what
experiences they’ve had. You can
also simply contact a therapist,
who should only be too glad to
give you a free, no-obligation
consultation.
There's a huge range
of complementary
therapies out there.
How can you get a
balanced picture?
I would suggest keeping
an open mind and
try them! If
something takes
your interest
give it a go.
Attending
a health and
£10 taster sessions now
available lasting 15 minutes
wellbeing event is a fantastic way
of finding out about the different
therapies on offer. Most therapists
who take part in these events offer
taster sessions for a nominal fee.
Get there early though as they get
booked up very quickly!
How do you find a good therapist?
Most therapists work very hard
to maintain high standards of
professionalism and will take pride
in belonging to a governing body,
which will have a strict code of
practice. Membership for therapists
means that they must have had
proper training and be covered
by a current insurance policy to
practise. They must also keep their
knowledge and practice up-to-date.
The websites of these governing
bodies will have a list of member
therapists in your area.
Finally, what everyday steps can
people take to improve wellbeing?
More often than not, the smallest of
changes can have the most profound
effect. Walking up the stairs instead
of taking the lift, swapping a bag
of crisps at lunchtime for a piece of
fruit, taking a bath in the evening
before bed to relax instead of
watching TV... and my personal
favourite – sharing a smile or an act
of kindness is guaranteed to make
you feel good and lift your spirits!

T he Jean-Mairet &
Gillman watch brand,
founded in 1999, draws
its references and its
traditional craftsmanship from a
very long line of watchmakers. It
was the dream of César A. Jean-
Mairet to combine his passion for
watches with his family tradition,
and he has done what many
enthusiasts can only dream about –
set up his own watch company.
JMg PhilOsOPhyThe designs are a reflection of
Jean-Mairet’s artistic talents. Even
on his travels, he is seldom without
pen and sketch paper. He is the
motivation behind the JMG brand.
“A watch has to be comfortable,
easy to read, possess a reliable
movement and if need be, have
a complication that is useful,” he
comments on his own philosophy
of watch-making.
In fact, JMG is now well on the
way to achieving what Jean-Mairet
set out to do – creating distinctive
watches that excite, inspire and
redefine the way we look at
timekeeping.
watCh-MaKing heritage The JMG pedigree is undisputed.
In the 19th century, Sylvain Jean-
Mairet, master horologist, became
a maker of lever escapements,
precision watches and
chronometers. The family heritage
continued into the 20th century,
when André Jean-Mairet was
appointed chief of the workshops
at the École d’Horlogerie du Locle.
During his career, André won 119
first prizes from the Observatoire
de Neuchâtel for his watch-making
and secured two records for his
chronometers.
INTRODucING...
Jean-Mairet &Gilman
The Gillmans form the other branch
of the family tree. César Jean-
Mairet’s great-great grandparents
were Robert Gillman and Caroline
Bovet of the well-known Bovet of
Fleurier family of watchmakers.
Bovet became famous for its pocket
watches made for the Chinese
market in the 19th century. These
were among the first to emphasise
the beauty of the movements
with their skeletonized views and
decorative movements.
ClassiC and COnteMPOraryNowadays, JMG watches are classic
yet contemporary, designed for the
connoisseur who loves watches.
Each collection is unique and has its
own personality, while each watch is
produced in a limited series, making
the brand both utterly desirable and
highly collectable.
Jean-Mairet & Gillman connects
the past with the present – and
indeed the future – of elite watch-
making. What man can resist?

a member of the victorious Ashes
squad. He is currently enjoying
a high profile in the game and is
widely seen as belonging to the
future of England cricket for many
years to come, having achieved
great performances with both the
bat and the ball.
stuart brOad JMG are delighted that Stuart Broad,
captain of the England Twenty20 cricket
team, is an ambassador for its exclusive
brand. Cricket is a gentleman's sport,
so it seems entirely fitting to connect
such sophisticated timepieces with the
