Bowler

The bowler will need the rolled up magazine and the marble, the rolled up magazine will rest on the book at the bowlers end, if needed to it can be lifted up slightly to make more of an angle so the ball rolls down easier. If the bowler hits the book (wickets) the batsman is out.

Batsman

The batsman will need a ruler to hit the ball. The batsman scores runs by hitting the ball through the gaps in the books that are marked with different numbers. If you hit the fielders that are standing at the books you are out, if you just hit the book and the book only it will be a dropped catch.

Fielders

These will be stick men drawn on the paper. The paper will need to be folded at the bottom and then the folded part is placed under the books so they look like they are standing up.

R – radio

I – igloo

C – chair

K – keys

E – eggs

T – table

Score - 31

Use the word to think of things that

begin with each letter from the word.

It can be anything and everything. This aims to broaden vocabulary and help to improve spelling

The longer the word the more runs gained - 1 run for each letter

This may be challenging, however it will get everyone involved to help out with both the spelling and the counting of the letters to see what the final score is

Progression

To incorporate moving around they have to find an object in the house which begins with that word, e.g. C – Cushion

How to play

• Decide how many goes per player and how many wickets you can lose before being out.

• Each time the dice is rolled the number of runs/wickets are written down.

• If you roll a 5 you lose a wicket (while you can score 5 runs in cricket, in this game if you roll a 5 you lose a wicket).

• The winner player/team is the one who scores the most runs at the end.

Alternatives if you don’t have dice

• Use a little cardboard box and write the numbers on each of the sides.

• Write the numbers on a piece of paper cut them out and then put them in a bowl. You then take turns to pick a number and, as before, 5 means you lose a wicket.

• When the player opens the book they note of the last unit in the page number e.g. if the opened page is 154, then the last unit is 4 so the score is 4

• Possible scores are therefore 2, 4, 6, 8 and 0

• If the number is 2, 4 or 6 the score will be added to the batsman score

• If the number is 8 that counts as a dot ball

• If the number is 0 the batsman is out
