Studienrelevanter Auslandsaufenthalt

• Requirement by the Ministry of Education for future teachers of foreign

languages

• At least 12 weeks’ stay abroad

• Country where the foreign language is spoken natively (some

exemptions – please see Anne Gans)

• studienrelevant

• Must be completed before applying for MEd thesis

• Previous stays only count if not older than 3 years before starting to

study

• Does not need to be 12 weeks in a row (but recommended)


Why is it a requirement? • Improve and maintain good language skills

• Experience language and culture of an English-speaking country

• Travel, learn about history/geography

• Give you credibility as language teacher with knowledge and

experience of at least one English-speaking country

• Increase confidence, boost social skills

• Gain teaching experience or experience a different way of study


What is studienrelevant? • Studying at a secondary or tertiary institution (high school, university,

college, language school)

• Teaching or teaching assistant in foreign language classroom (can be

German or English, any level)

• Teaching a course related to the second subject in English

• Teaching children in youth groups, camps, church groups, etc in

English

• Office jobs/internships only if related to English Studies or language

teaching (e.g. publisher of textbooks, language school)

• NEW: au pair (must submit a two-page report justifying why it is

studienrelevant)


FAQs • Does my American high school year count?

>> Yes, if not older than 3 years.

• Does my Australian work and travel count?

>> Only if the work part was studienrelevant.

• Does my au pair year count?

>> Yes, if you submit a two-page report justifying the study-relevant nature! If you took college/language

courses, they could count.

• I want to work as a group leader at a youth camp in Malta. Does it count?

>> Yes.


FAQs • I want to do a teaching assistantship at the American School in Argentina, but

Argentina is not an English-speaking country. Does it count?

>> Yes, if the school runs completely in English.

• I can‘t travel due to medical issues. What do I do?

>> In cases of extreme medical hardships, we can organise internships at international

schools in Germany.

• I also study Spanish. Do I have to do two Auslandsaufenthalte?

>> No, just one is required. Can do two if you wish.

Can mix, e.g. American School in Argentina,

Spanish teaching assistant in UK, etc.


How do I get credit for stay?

How do I get credit for courses? • Before departure: plan and sign a learning agreement

with Anne Gans

Amer/Brit/Ling F4/A courses

SP3/4, SPE or SK courses

Did F2/A courses only with prior permission

Courses must be similar in Thema und Umfang

Credit course for course (ECTS usually irrelevant)

• While abroad: confirm course of study and any changes via email

• Upon return: bring grade transcripts and a form “Anrechnung von Prüfungsleistungen” to Anne Gans – in a timely manner!


How do I go abroad? • Erasmus

• LUH agreements with other countries

• ISEP

• PAD or Amity

• Au pair programs

• Self-organised

• Courses completed at a tertiary institution may be accredited for

courses at LUH if similar in terms of topic and assessment


Erasmus+ • Faculty agreements with Gdansk, Oslo

• 5 places in total

• Money: no tuition fees. Students pay travel, food, accommodation.

Stipend: approx. 200€/month (varies)

• Must take at least 3 courses = 15 ECTS

Secret tip: Other departments also have agreements with English-

speaking countries! Check your second-subject depts!

• Applications: 1 year in advance. Forms available from Anne Gans.


Non-Erasmus • EngSem agreements with Bristol, Huddersfield, Coventry (England),

University of the West Indies (Jamaica)

• Money: no tuition fees. Students pay travel, food, accommodation. Erasmus stipend: ??? UK is out of Erasmus when Brexit begins!

• Must take at least 3 courses = 15 ECTS (note: British credits are double, i.e. 30 credits = 15 ECTS)

Secret tip: Other departments also have agreements with English-speaking countries! Check your second-subject depts!

• Applications: 1 year in advance. Forms available from Anne Gans.


Other agreements • LUH has tuition-waiver agreements with universities in other countries,

e.g. US, Canada, India, Australia

• Some only available to students of certain departments/faculties

Linguistics at U of Georgia • August-December, Athens, Georgia

• Only for 3 FüBA students English AND German

• Must be at least 3rd semester when you go

• UGA tuition, accommodation covered

• DAAD scholarship for flights etc

• Up to 5 courses / 30 ECTS

• Must do a new TOEFL test

• Deadline for application: 15 January

PAD

• Teaching assistant program with Pädagogischer Austausch Dienst der

Kultusministerkonferenz

• A full school year (9 months)

• Stipend/wages

• Application deadlines: 1 Dec (except USA: 1 Nov)

• Various requirements depending on country (UK, Ire, USA, Can, Aus, NZ)

• Can only apply for one country!

• Must also take college courses or language classes to get credit or write a two-page report justifying the study-relevant nature

• Cultural Care Au Pair – au pair/cultural exchange program including courses. Min. 1 year – max. 2 year stay with a family

• Flights, 4-week training course in NY, $200/week wages, up to $500 stipend for college fees (can also get Kindergeld for college fees)

• Cost: Program fees 575€, insurance 645€, J1 visa $180
