Inter-laboratory Correlation ExerciseSummary

– Light Duty prioritised– Commenced late summer 2004– Kick-off meeting at JRC, Ispra on 2-3 Sept. 04– 9 labs participating (11 repetitions)– Project managed by DG JRC (Ispra, Italy)– Golden Engineer funded by DfT (UK)– Foreseen end by Autumn 2005

• First letter and questionnaire in mid July• 22 experts mainly from labs, and instrument manufacturers• Presentation of labs• Presentation of possible instrumentation• Meeting with Japanese delegation a few days before

• Resulted in participation of 9 labs to final testing programme and strong involvement of instrumentation companies


Inter-laboratory Correlation Exercise

• Aims– Evaluate repeatability– Determine reproducibility of candidate measurement

systems– Evaluate robustness of draft test protocols for mass

and number


• Repeated measurements at several laboratories (with JRC bookends)

• Travelling ‘Golden Engineer’ + two of JRC staff to ensure best and reproducible testing practice

• Very low PM ‘Golden Vehicle’ at all labs Repeatability• Optionally test other Euro IV vehicles (with/without DPFs)• Test ‘Golden Measurement System’ for particle numbers

Set-up


On site:• Preliminary visit by Golden Engineer (1 day) to

– guide on interpretation of docs– review and advise on set-up of instruments– selection of alternative vehicles and systems

• Visit during start of testing by Golden Engineer, Programme Manager and JRC Technician (1.5 days)– Inspect the installation of the golden and other systems– Confirm the results of linearity checks– Witness preliminary and start of testing – Optimise sampling parameters

• For non-EU labs, only JRC Programme Manager visit

Golden Vehicle• Peugeot 407 Saloon 2.0 HDi 136 SE 4Dr, Tyres 215/55R17• New vehicle sponsored by the AECC• Registered in the UK (right-hand drive)• Has been run in on the road

• Particulate emissions according to the PMP protocol significantly less than 0.0025 g/km

• Particle numbers measured by the PMP Particle Number protocol were less than 1011 per km for the NEDC cycle.
