Tedd L. Mitchell, M.D., TTUHSC President, recently gave the closing keynote address during a Leadership Texas Foundation for Women’s Resources session at the Overton Hotel and Conference Center. The Foundation for Women’s Resources is a private, nonpro!t, educational organization headquartered in Dallas.
Arthur Nelson, Ph.D., dean of the School of Pharmacy, has been selected as the University of Iowa College of Pharmacy’s 2010 Distinguished Alumni. He will be honored during an awards dinner Oct. 1 in Iowa City, Iowa, in conjunction with the university’s 125th celebration.
Debbie Mercer, MSN, R.N., ACNP-BC, assistant professor, TTUHSC SON at Odessa, will serve as the !rst president of the Texas League for Nursing board. The Texas board is the latest group of state-based nurse educators to join forces to support the mission of the National League for Nursing.
Luis G. Cuello, Ph.D., assistant professor, Department of Cell Physiology and Molecular Biophysics Center for Membrane Protein Research, recently had his research paper, “Structural mechanism of C-type inactivation in K+ channels,” published in Nature, the weekly international interdisciplinary journal of science.
The Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) recently awarded $142 million in grants to fund cancer research and prevention efforts across the state. TTUHSC’s Patrick Reynolds, M.D., Ph.D., professor in the SOM Department of Cell Biology and Biochemistry; Marjorie Jenkins, M.D., executive director of the Laura W. Bush Institute for Women’s Health; and Siva Vanapalli, assistant professor, in the Department of Chemical Engineering at TTU, were among the recipients. Other recipients include researchers from The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, Rice University, the University of Houston, and the Methodist Hospital Research Institute.

The Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) recently presented the 2010 Award of Excellence in Community Service to Linda Brice, R.N., Ph.D., associate professor in the Anita Thigpen Perry SON, for her dedication to improving the lives of women and newborns through community service. The award was presented at the AWHONN national convention in Las Vegas. Brice’s work with the Stork’s Nest Baby Shower also was recently featured in a collection of stories written by nursing educators, called, “Giving Through Teaching, How Nurse Educators Are Changing the World,” written by nursing leaders Joyce J. Fitzpatrick, Ph.D., MDA, R.N.; Cathleen M. Shultz, Ph.D., R.N., CNE; and Tonia D. Aiken, J.D., R.N.
Wrennah Gabbert, Ph.D., R.N., CPNP, associate professor and coordinator, Nurse Practitioner Studies, in the Anita Thigpen Perry SON, recently was appointed to the Texas School Health Advisory Committee which is part of the Department of State Health Services.
Sherry Sancibrian, M.S., CCC-SLP, associate professor and program director, Speech-Language Pathology, SOAHS, has been selected for the 2010 National Council of State Board of Examiners for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology. Honors. She will receive the award in October.
TTUHSC has received more than $1 million in federal funding from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration to establish a Geriatric Education Center. The center, headquartered in Amarillo, will serve 12 percent of the Texas population.
Patrick J. Hanford, D.O., FACOFP, has been named president-elect of the Texas Osteopathic Medical Association (TOMA) for 2010-2011. Hanford practices at KingsPark Urgent Care Center and is an instructor at TTUHSC. TOMA represents about 3,000 members, including 585 osteopathic medical students at the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine in Fort Worth.
