A community survey conducted

by the Timber Lake School gives a

peek into community attitudes about

the school.About 130 people answered the

survey, which was distributed in

the community and made available

online in May.The survey was created by a com-

mittee led by school board member

Marcia O’Leary. Some of the responses were very

positive and others give school of-

ficials something to work on.

Eighty-five percent of respondents

said they feel welcome at the school,

82% said their child is safe at school

and 87.9% said the school does a

good job of integrating and support-

ing new students.Other questions elicited less confi-

dence. For example, only 53.4% said

that the administration was open to

ideas from parents and guardians, and

55% said the meals served at school

are nutritious. On a question about reaction to

parent concerns, 35.5% of the 31

people who said they had contacted

With funding now available, the

S.D. Dept. of Game, Fish and

Parks is planning a renovation

of the Firesteel Dam located a

mile north and a mile and a half

west of Firesteel. This aerial view

shows the dam, which was washed

out many years ago. The plan is

to put risers on the dam with a

six-foot pipe through the dam.

Dick Stave and Dan McCormick

of GF&P met with the Dewey

County Commissioners on Sept.

7 to discuss the impact on the

adjoining county road. There

is no definite time line for the

project yet.

the school with a concern said their

concern had not been taken seriously,

and 37% said their child had not been

treated fairly. Sixty-three percent of the respon-

dents said the school does a good job

of communicating with students,

parents and the community.

In the area of curriculum and aca-

demics, the school rated mostly good

to very good. The survey asked which

areas should be expanded. Eighty-

three percent said music, 79% said

local history, 67% said local culture

and 23.7% said Lakota language.

Over 87% said the curriculum

prepares students for the next level

of learning. Most of the questions about extra-

curricular activities garnered a “good”

or “very good” response. Those who took the survey had

an opportunity to give comments on

many of the questions. The numbers

and the comments will be examined

by the committee, administrators,

board members, and staff to deter-

mine how to best use the data to

improve the school.

The Family Fellowship Center at

Timber Lake is being reorganized.

Pastor David Klein recently an-

nounced that he and the board mem-

bers (Dick Anderson and Maryann

Kraft) were dissolving the corpora-

tion. He said that the building would

be sold or rented to another tax-

exempt ministry.Mandy Hulm of Timber Lake, a

member of the church, said this week

that a group of people, most of whom

had been involved in the church

before, is organizing a new 501 (c) 3

corporation.The church was originally orga-

nized in 1991 with help from Pastor

John Anderson.“My mother-in-law (the late Deb

Hulm) had a dream in her heart,”

said Mandy. “We do not want to

let it go. I expect good things to be

happening.”Hulm said Pastor Joel Ziolkowski

of Custer (Living Outreach Church)

is helping with the reorganization.

Ziolkowski is the youngest son of

the late Korzak Ziolkowski, sculptor

of Crazy Horse Mountain.

A new building was completed

in 2003 under the leadership of Rev.

Duane and Diana Covey. They were

later joined by Mike and Ann Hecht,

Sharon Furch, and Diane Carter in

various ministry roles. The church expanded to Little

Eagle and Eagle Butte — now both

independent churches. After the Coveys moved to

Nebraska, several other pastors served

the church briefly. The church property has tempo-

rarily been transferred to Ziolkowski,

Hulm said, and when the local group

gets its 501 (c) 3 status, it will resume

ownership.“It’s starting over again,” Hulm

said, “which is okay. It’s good to get

a fresh start and have a clean slate.

We hope to start services again soon.”

“I believe God has a good plan for

that church. He’s not done with it

yet,” she said. “Good things will be

happening but it will take a while.”

“At different times the church has

had an awesome children’s program

and youth program and praise and

worship and Bible studies,” Hulm

said. “There is so much potential

there.”
