    Covering a total area of 7.69 million squarekilometers, mainland Australia is the worldslargestisland - but smallest continent.

    Australia is the world's sixth largest country,after Russia, Canada, China, the USA, and Brazil. Inaddition to the mainland, Australia is surrounded bymany thousands of small fringing islands andnumerous larger ones, which, overall, amount to anarea half the size of Tasmania.
