WHYWE’RE HEREFORYOUTHDEVELOPMENT

FOR HEALTHYLIVING

FORSOCIALRESPONSIBILITY

Nurturing the potential of every child and teenWe believe that all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are andwhat they can achieve. That’s why, through the YMCA, millions of youth todayare cultivating the values, skills and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health and educational achievement.

Improving our community’s health and well-beingIn neighborhoods across the five boroughs, the YMCA is a leading voice on healthand well-being. The Y brings families closer together, encourages good health andfosters connections through fitness, sports, fun and shared interests. As a result, nearly 400,000 youth, adults and families are receiving the support, guidanceand resources needed to achieve greater health and well-being for their spirit, mind and body.

Giving back and providing support to our neighborsThe YMCA has been listening and responding to New York City’s most criticalsocial needs for 160 years. Whether developing skills or emotional well-beingthrough education and training, welcoming and connecting diverse demographicpopulations through global services, or preventing chronic disease and buildinghealthier communities through collaborations with policymakers, the Y fosters thecare and respect all people need and deserve.

We’re Here for Good. It’s been the signature phrase of New York City’s YMCA since early 2008, and it describesthe Y’s commitment to building the foundations of – and strengthening – our communities, through nurturing thepotential of every child and teen, improving community health and well-being and providing opportunities to giveback and support neighbors.

We’re here for you and your family. We’re here for the community. We’re here for good.

EVERYONEIS WELCOMEWe’re proud to ensure that the YMCA is accessible to everyone, and we never want anyoneto be turned away for an inability to pay. Don’t hesitate to ask about financial assistancefor programs or membership. We’re happy to help.

We’re able to open our doors to all thanks to a community of generous supporters to our annualStrong Kids Campaign. Contributions to Strong Kids enable us to offer a number of our programs andservices at low or no cost, and to make assistance available to make participation affordable.

The Y is more than a membership card. We’re bigger than the programs we offer in our facility oraround the community. Will you help us as a donor or volunteer fundraiser to ensure that everyonecan be a part of the Y?

Dear YMCA & Families,

Three years ago, my husband and I walkedinto the YMCA feeling helpless, hopeless andpetrified due to the drug addiction of ouroldest son. We did not know where or who toturn to, or what to do. Our hearts werebroken. Diligently, I attended your meetingson Wednesday nights, listening, sharing andabsorbing all that I could. Through your hardwork with me and my hard work with myself, Ihave come to better understand the diseaseof addiction. I am no longer angry at my son,nor am I embarrassed of his disease and thethings that it had lead him to do. I havelearned to work the tools that you have givenme and by doing so, my life has changed forthe better. I am able to wake up every dayand live life to the fullest, I am able to look atthe addict and see my son. I am proud of

each and every day that Michael faces andbattles this cunning, baffling, insidiousdisease, knowing full well that it will be abattle for the rest of his life.

So, you ask me what happened that wasgood this week, THE BEST THING EVER. My son called me at work on July 5th andproudly informed me that he had one yearclean. I cried, remembering all that we, as afamily, had been through, rememberingwhere we were to where we are now. I toldhim how proud I was that he is my son, howproud I am of the strength and growth hehas shown. He deserves to know that he isworth loving and that I am proud of him, regardless of his past.

In his effort to stay clean, my son will needthe love and support of his family. I know

that as long as we stay in touch with thisdisease, we will be better prepared to copewith it. While there are no guarantees thathe will remain clean, I know that I willsurvive, no matter what. I will never give upon my son, nor will I allow the disease ofaddiction to destroy my life. I urge each andevery one of you to keep to work throughthe tough times and LISTEN, LISTEN toeverything that is said and offered. Put intoplace the things that may seem difficult atfirst, for in doing so, you are helping youraddicted loved one, while setting safeboundaries for yourself. Remain vigilant, stay strong and know that there is hope.Thank you for doing what you do.

Love, Karen
