Lighting Up Lives Awards

Four times during the year, we will recognize chapters chosen by the State Board for doing a GREAT job with projects, fundraising, membership drives, inputting information into CHARITY and CARES, and exemplifying what it means to be “A Citizen Wherever We Serve.” Nominations come from local management, state board members, and information submitted for the monthly Energizer. Chosen by the State Board for the second quarter and receiving $500 each are:

United Way has a national DAY OF ACTION planned on June 21.  This is a national strategic effort on the longest day of the year to advance the common good.  More than 74,000 individuals participated nationwide last year. Georgia Power encourages you to participate either as an individual or as part of a group.

To celebrate United Way's 125th anniversary, United Way of Atlanta has created 125 volunteer opportunities in theMetro Area. If you are in the metropolitan area, you can get information at their website: www.unitedwayofatlanta.org

No matter where you are in the state, you can participate by doing something in your local community. Here are a few suggestions:•Eat at Chick-fil-A in the metropolitan area. On June 21, 10% of the cost of your meal will be donated to United Way•Donate canned food to a local food pantry •Donate blood – save a life. Schedule a donation at your local Red Cross•Encourage friends to join you for a workout to help promote healthy living•Gather personal care items including soap, toothbrush, shampoo, underwear, socks for people at local shelters•Help an older neighbor with a chore around their house•Offer free babysitting to a single mom or family in need•Volunteer at a local shelter to help prepare and serve dinner to the homeless

Whatever you choose to do in service to others will give you great satisfaction. This is a core value of our company and employees. You do these things all year long, but try to make a special effort to participate on June 21.

Important Date in Our History

On June 11, 1994, the name of the organization was changed from Women of Georgia Power to Citizens ofGeorgia Power. The historic meeting was held in Romeat the Annual Meeting with State President Audrey Wimberly presiding.

Many name suggestions were considered but the one receiving overwhelming support was “Citizens” to go with the mission to be “A Citizen Wherever We Serve”.

Athens Chapter Supports March of Dimes Team

The Athens Chapter helped sponsor a March of DimesTeam organized in memory of Hadley, 2011 ChapterPresident Jason Brown’s niece. Hadley was born earlierthis year and sadly died.

Changes to 2012 State Board

Johnny Powell has found it necessary to resign from the Citizens of Georgia Power State Board. We appreciate hisdedication for the past two years as a board member and also as a chapter president in Brunswick and JeffersonStreet in recent years.

Cheryl Davis, Marketing Chair and current Athens Chapterpresident, has agreed to chair the Chapter Relationship IIIGroup (Northeast, East and Coastal Region Chapters) and Amy Anderson has joined the board as Marketing Chair. Amy served as Effingham Chapter President in 2010 and 2011. She was instrumental in the organization of the Effingham Chapter.

Third Annual PowerClays Earns $34,000 To

Benefit Electric Kids

The Annual Jim Simmons PowerClays Tournament was held on May 11. Metro South Chapter and GPC Forestry and Right of Way Services teamed up to put on a successful event. All proceeds raised will benefit Electric Kids, our registered charity that supports the children of deceased or disabled Georgia Power or Southern Company employees based in Georgia. We have experienced several losses in our Georgia Power family in recent years and this charity touches the lives of many people we know and care about greatly. Matt Goff served as event chair. The team was excited to earn $34,000 for Electric Kids.

CVI Board of Trustees PresentsHelping Hand Award to General Office Chapter

On Tuesday, May 15, the Center for Visually Impairedpresented a Helping Hand Award to the General OfficeChapter for the outstanding support given to CVI during the year and especially for the support of the True Blue Do (major fundraiser). State President Ashley Koby serves on the Board of Trustees for CVI.

For 50 years, the Center for the Visually Impaired has empowered people with vision loss to live with independence and dignity. As Georgia’s largest comprehensive, fully accredited organization providing rehabilitation services, they serve people of all ages who are blind or visually impaired.

Each year, more than 5,000 people from Atlanta and all over Georgia turn to CVI to help them adjust to – or improve – a life with limited or no sight. CVI is Georgia’s largest comprehensive, fully accredited private facility providing rehabilitation services for the blind and visually impaired.

(left to right) Steve Moon: Charlotte (Charlie) Moon, Team Captain; and Shannon Moon, Site Designer.  The team had a lot of involvement this year from the entire chapter as well as had Executive Vice President Anthony Wilson make a visit to their Relay and site!  In addition, they had several members of the Jefferson Street Chapter participate. Rachel Bailey did an incredible job as chair again of the Gwinnett Luminaries. She had help from several chapter volunteers.

Carrollton Relay

The Carrollton Chapter participated in the event at the University of West Georgia. There were 30 volunteers and

the team raised $1080.

Athens

The Athens Chapter of Citizens of Georgia Power participated in the Athens Relay For Life on May 11. 31 volunteers walked and manned a vendor booth selling grilled cheese sandwiches, chips and drinks to walkers to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. The team

raised $4,579!

The Thomson CGP chapter participated in the McDuffie County Relay for Life on May.  They helped host a joint Chapter golf tournament, raffled off a cow, and cooked “Tornado Potatoes” during the event for fundraisers.  In

all, they raised approximately $7,300 for cancer research which was a record amount for their chapter.

Ryan Poole, Relay Team Captain, and Chapter President, Steven Bradl, reinvented the team strategy and fundraising efforts. Three methods were used for this year’s team: on-line fundraising accounts, an iPad 3 raffle (2 given away), and a Cake Bake raffle (headed up by Chapter Secretary, Kate Bathe). The Savannah Citizen’s Chapter took First Place among 119 teams with total donations of

$8,782.Savannah’s most successful team member, Kim Hankins, raised $3,262 from online donations alone. She is currently battling Breast Cancer and Primary Peritoneal Carcinoma. The Savannah Chapter has pulled together to provide Kim support and motivation in her second battle against cancer. Kim was the top overall fundraiser out of 1,107 volunteers in the Chatham County event with donations of $3,262.

Metro South at Fayette County Relay

Julie Munnicha and daughter helped with sales. The group sold

cotton candy, glow sticks,bottled water, and raffled a

set of Braves tickets.

The team raised $4,602. In addition, the team made a $250 donation to the Coweta County Relay.

Columbus

The Columbus team raised

$8,677

The Columbus Chapter logged over 350 service hours in support of 5 fundraising events.  The list of events that were held this year and the project chairs were: •Golf Tournament (Cleve Fann, Amy Evans & Gary Miller)•Popcorn Sales (David Griffin)•Fishing Tournament (Verlon Quesenberry & Jason Perez)•Yard Sale (Rhonda Blanchard)•Relay for Life Muscogee County (Michael Olajubutu & Kelly Brinkley)

The chapter’s 4th annual golf tournament on May 12th, benefiting the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, was a big success, raising over $5,500 and providing lots of fun for the participants and volunteers.

Dublin

The Dublin Chapter had 39 participants and raised $750which included a dunking booth! George Dobbins (Dublin-Vidalia Engineering Supervisor) and Charlie Scarbrough (Dublin Lineman) were in the dunking booth.

Hinesville/Jesup

The Hinesville/Jesup Chapter had 33 participants and raised $3887 for the American Cancer Society. The majorpart of the total came from their softball tournament.

At the Relay, theteam sold various

snacks and beverages.

The Customer Care Center participated in the annual Henry County Relay for Life event in support of the American Cancer Society’s fight against cancer.  The event was held at Ola High School in Henry County.  Over 150 CCC employees and their families attended the event with a boxing theme titled, KNOCK OUT CANCER.

Employees at the Customer Care Center have currently

raised $22,055.19 in the fight against cancer. The CCC’s 2012 Relay for Life was chaired by Kaprena Seymore and Anita Carden.

The project created great excitement around the center and allowed them to raise more dollars for the event than ever before. Every department at the center participated and the team was the second largest contributor in the county and had the largest team presence at the event.

Tallulah Falls Participates in Relay

The Tallulah Falls team had 25 walkers participate in theRelay For Life on June 8. The team raised $345.

Clayton Chapter’s Community GardenProject Began on Earth Day

The fruits of their labor...or should we say vegetables“ of their labor...are starting to come in! It looks like Clayton Chapter is going to have a lot of squash and cucumbers in their community garden. The tomatoes are still green but should start ripening soon. The peppers, okra and eggplants still have some growing to do. It is exciting to see their project which began on Earth Day starting to produce! The vegetables will be donated to the local needy in the community.

Athens Chapter Supports Athens

Regional Medical Center Guest House

Athens Chapter members logged 40 hours in service onSaturday, June 9. The group of volunteers painted fourbedrooms, four baths, and an office at the Athens Regional Medical Center’s guest house.

The 5th Annual Hee Haw Motorcycle Ridesponsored by the Clayton Chapter involved75 motorcycles and 101 riders. Seventeen

Volunteers worked on the event which raised$6203 for American Cancer Society.

Gwinnett Chapter – March of Dimes

The chapter had 13 adults and 10 children walk 4.1 miles for March of Dimes in Suwanee. They raised $2,005 for this cause online and enjoyed a great day.  The March of Dimes team captain was Tony Chow.

Gwinnett Chapter Rescheduled Earth Day Project

One of Gwinnett Chapter’s Earth Day Projects was rescheduled for May 19. The group partnered with APA(Asian Pacific Americans Employee Resource Group) to work with the 2012 Good Neighbor Community Days forGwinnett Clean and Beautiful. Chapter member and Metro North Region Manager Fran Forehand was recentlyelected to the board of GC&B.

Carrollton’s March of Dimes

The Carrollton March of Dimes team had 13 volunteers and

donated $1000.

Members of the Statesboro Chapter partnered with the local Ambassadors to serve an afternoon meal to the children at the Statesboro Boys and Girls Club.
