  • State of the NetworkAs of May 22nd, 2007

  • What is the point? We need faster speeds and better quality of data for:IPT (IP Telephony)IPTV (IP Television)Future technologies (crystal ball is currently in the shop)Many buildings are sorely lacking the infrastructureWe need an unbiased way to prioritize buildings for overhaul

  • How are buildings scored? The building score is the sum of the scores for each of the following criteriaEquipmentData WiringData TerminationVoice WiringVoice TerminationCommunication Room Environment

  • EquipmentThe type of network equipment Creighton currently has a variety of equipment running the networkHubs Bad! barely capable at data, voice has no chance 3680 ports @ 3 points/port 3Com switches Old and failing, capable at data, voice is unreliable 3240 ports @ 5 points/portCisco 2950 switches Not scalable, good at data, voice is no guarantee 5100 ports @ 7 points/portCisco 3750 switches Scalable, excellent at data, very capable at voice 2761 ports @ 10 points/port

  • Data Wiring/Voice WiringThis is referencing the wire running from the patch panel in the Comm Room to the wall plateUnrated Suitable only for the lowest grade data (10 mbps), but very well suited to analog voice 1 pointCat3 Also low grade data (10mbps, sometimes 100 mbps), good analog voice 2 pointsCat5 Decent data (100mbps), not IPT capable 5 pointsCat5E Good data (100mbps, sometimes 1000mbps), the absolute minimum for IPT 7 pointsCat6 Excellent data (1000mbps, 10000mbps with shorter distances), excellent for IPT 9 pointsCat6a Incredible data (10gbps), excellent for IPT 10 points

  • Data Termination/ Voice TerminationTermination is how we transition from the raw wire to a jack that can be plugged into network equipmentScoring is the same as the wiring scoresSome buildings have disparate wiring and terminationAs a system we expect it to function as the lowest common denominatorPoor termination is easier to fix than poor wiring

  • EnvironmentThe communication room is rated (subjectively) with these things in mind:SpaceAir conditioningPower conditioningDirtMiscellaneous atrocities against best practices

  • Any other Criteria being considered? There are some that we havent fully fleshed out how to measure, but would like to includeEntire building uplink speedWireless coverageNeedOpen to other possible measurements

  • Worst buildings (Bottom Ten)Brandeis HallDeglman Residence HallHeider Residence HallKenefick Residence HallBoyne Dental SchoolHitchcockSt. Johns ChurchCriss IGallagher Residence HallOld Gym

  • How are Residence Halls being served?Currently, most of the residence halls have cable modems for their network connectionDavis Square and Opus Hall are on the Creighton networkIn the future we will need to look at bringing the remaining halls back into the fold

  • The Targeted Bottom Ten (worst on top)Brandeis HallBoyne Dental SchoolHitchcockSt. Johns ChurchCriss IOld GymHealth Sciences Library-BICLinnCardiac Care CenterReinert Alumni Library

  • What are the next steps?Boyne is undergoing a partial rewire (dental clinic area)We have made the ask ($$$$) to move forward with the Network RoadmapPart of that ask is to be able to replace the aging phone switch serving campus West of the InterstateIn order to replace that switch, the following buildings will need an overhaul/augmentationCardiac Care CenterBio Information CenterBoyneCUMCAs always time and money are key factors to moving forward

  • Fun FactsThere are approximately 14781 data ports on campusThis does not include remote locations or any mini-hubs/switchesIt also doesnt take into account the number of ports that will have to be added to take on voiceRight now that calculates to 619 24 port switchesAt $6700 per switch, that equals about $4,147,300Using a 6 year replacement cycle, that comes out to $691,217 per year (maintenance not included)Almost $2,000,000 to replace the 3Coms and Hubs
