Dental implants are a known and predictable treatment option for missing teeth, where most patients today desire this therapy. Implant survival is greater than 95% in most short-term and some long-term studies, but these favourable outcomes depend greatly on proper case selection, careful diagnosis, comprehensive treatment planning, and skilful execution of prosthodontic and surgical techniques.

Focusing on site development from extraction to implant placement to help execute predictable implant surgery with minimal complications is paramount in providing stable functional and aesthetic results.

Understanding of bone biology principles, selection of graft materials, choice of implant design, and prevention of biologic complications are at the forefront of implant dentistry today. In the past few years, several consensus conferences have been held and systematic reviews have been written to determine accurate diagnosis, prevalence, prevention, and treatment for peri-implantitis. Here, clinical cases and scientific evidence will be utilized to discuss these important topics in providing successful implant therapy.

This course will also review current concepts in implant maintenance and peri-implantitis, and present some new concepts in treatment.
