THE PASSAGE OF THE FISCALYEAR 2018 BUDGET

This year’s budget includesrecord victories for public librar-ies and cultural organizations

On Tuesday, June 6th, the NewYork City Council passed an$85.2 billion budget that includesrecord victories for our publiclibraries and cultural organiza-tions with a historic $132 millionin capital funding for New YorkCity’s three public library sys-tems to make needed repairs andfacility upgrades that will ensureall New Yorkers can enjoy theinvaluable and essential servicesNew York City’s libraries pro-vide. Furthermore, the budget in-cludes $160 million in capitalfunding and a nearly $20 millionincrease in operating support toover 1,000 cultural organizationsacross the five boroughs.

Additionally, the budget hon-ors our commitment to our se-niors, veterans, families, and youth:

- $23 million in baselinedfunding for senior services in-cluding $6.5 million to addressthe homecare waitlist, $4 millionfor a new Caregiver SupportProgram, and $1.2 million forweekend meals.

- A historic expansion of theveterans’ tax exemption to pro-vide for an average $400 in taxrelief for those who have servedour country.

- $9 million for the SummerYouth Employment program toprovide a record 70,000 jobs foryoung New Yorkers.

- $7.2 million to expand theEmergency Food Assistance Pro-gram for food pantries and com-munity kitchens to help NewYorkers suffering from hunger.

“As the Chair of the Com-mittee of Cultural Affairs andLibraries, I am proud to say thatthis year’s budget includes

record funding for our mostdemocratic of institutions thatserve all New Yorkers: our li-braries and organizations bigand small that create and sup-port arts and culture,” said Ma-jority Leader Jimmy VanBramer. “With $110 million incapital funding for libraries,$160 million in capital fundingfor arts and cultural organiza-tions and an increase of nearly$20 million in operating sup-port for cultural organizations,our budget demonstrates ourdedication to the millions ofNew Yorkers who find mean-ing, inspiration, and peace inour public libraries and throughthe creation and enjoyment ofarts and culture. This Sunday, June 11, 9:30AM-4:30PM, Queen of Angels Church Fine ArtFair again features local artists in for the10th Anniversary of the one-day fine artshow in Sunnyside at the historic ParishCommunity Hall at 44th St. and SkillmanAvenue. Admission is free.

The event has a festive atmosphere, withemerging artists among the more accom-plished locals. Oil, acrylic and watercolorpainters, digital artists, small textile sculp-ture, and photographers are among the 25-30 local artists exhibiting. Mustafa Yasarwill do a live demonstration of the ancientart of “ecru.”(

The fair began in 2007 with five artists,who included well known Simon Donikianand Ellen Mandelbaum, and 75 guests, andhas grown to 30 artists and 800 attendees.

Manny Gomez, President of SunnysideArtists, the group which organizes the eventsaid, “For fun, we offer food to at the“Patron of the Arts Café” and we’ll also

have scones and a coffee cart with differentkinds of coffee, including cold brewed. Atlunchtime, Tito Rad’s Grill will take overand sell $5 lunches to keep us all going,including vegetarian.”

Lowery Liquors is donating a glass ofred or white wine to all those who make anart purchase, always a popular feature.Raffles gifts include champagne, gift cer-tificates from Sole Luna and Quaint Restau-rant. As ever, a free, original collectible artpin is given to all who attend. It may be usedfor discounts on Tuesdays during the com-ing five-week, juried show,#GlimmerofHope, at Claret Wine Bar.

Frances Schmidt and Ona Whitman areback for their tenth year to sign in visitors atthe door. Sunnyside Artists donates 15% oftable fees to the local food pantries.
