Getting Started in the Hobby

Starting out in the hobby is an exciting experience and it all begins with choosing your first train set.

With so many options available, a plethora of brands each with limitless accessories, the task of

beginning your layout can be very overwhelming and daunting.

This catalogue is aimed at providing you with some introductory model railway items from the Hornby

Model Railways Collection, along with expansion packs and accessories to help you grow and expand

your model railway layout over time.

How much space will I need?

Hornby’s train sets each come with a track mat that works to a minimum space of 1800mm x 1200mm

(6ft x 4ft). This will eventually provide enough room for a double track loop and various sidings and

branches.

Baseboards and do I need one?

Whilst baseboards are recommended to support your model railway, they are not necessary to get

started. Any sturdy surface will be suitable (such as a dining room table).

If you wish to build a baseboard, the most popular constriction is a plywood top with support frames

running at 600mm intervals or less. Sturdy legs then can be affixed to each side for an upright design.

How much will all this cost me?

This will vary based on your available budget, what models and accessories you are drawn to, and how

large you wish to take the hobby. In this guide, starting small with a simple train set will set you back

$149.95. The price will then go up based on train set and how many accessories you wish to add.

What is the difference between DCC Ready and DCC Fitted?

DCC READY This blue logo indicates that the locomotive, train set or train pack is fitted with a socket that is ready to accept a DCC decoder. This logo is prominent on the item’s packaging and is usually next to the picture of the locomotive or the item’s barcode. It will usually be accompanied by a number, such as 6, 8, 18, 21, etc., which indicates the type of decoder this locomotive accepts (more on this below). The locomotive requires a DCC decoder to be fitted to the socket in order for it to work on a DCC controlled layout. It can however still be used on the conventional DC (analogue) layout.

DCC FITTED This red logo indicates that the locomotive, train set or train pack is fitted with a socket and has a pre-installed factory decoder fitted to it. This means that the locomotive is ready to run and operate on a DCC controlled layout. The locomotive can be run on a conventional DC (analogue) layout*, however, it won’t be able to use the digital functions that are operatable on a DCC layout (eg: sound playback, lighting control, independent call-up, etc). *Some manufacturers may issue a warning that they do not recommend a DCC fitted locomotive to be operated on a DC (analogue) layout. Check your locomotive’s manual for more information.

DC ANALOGUE (no logo) Where a logo does not appear, this indicates that the locomotive, train set or train pack is not fitted with a socket to accept a DCC decoder. Some locomotives can be converted to DCC by wiring the decoder directly. This requires solidering the wires of the decoder directly to the locomotive’s motor, power pickups and lighting accessories.

PIN NUMBER For DCC Ready locomotives, train sets or train packs, often a number icon will appear next to the DCC ready blue logo. This indicates the type of decoder that will fit into this DCC socket. In this example, a 21-pin type decoder is required. If the number is 8, this would indicate an 8-pin type decoder is required.
