    1985 was a good year for theGLRR. While reviewing all theevents in preparation for giving thePresident's Recognition Awards, Iwas pleasantly surprised to see thelarge,i,rumber of events available Lothe membersNP. How manY ofthem were you able to atlend orparticipate in?

    The following events arescheduled again for 1986' Takepart in one or more, either as arunner or helper: the Fudgical 5KSeries (in progress), the Pot LuckSupper (02/15/80, the run fromNashua to Hynes' Tavern(03/09/86), the Hynes'/Budwieser5-Mile Race (03/16/86), the 2-MileSeries, the Great Legs 5-Mile RoadRace (07186), the Jim Witt 5-StarRoad Race, the CaPe Cod RelaYs(I0/fBl86), the Run Your TurkeYOff 15K (Ll/23/80, the Mill Cities

    Relay 02/O7/86), and the Adult'sand Children's Christmas parties.Take an active part in one or moreof them. Your appreeiation ofthat event will change. Your ideascan make the event a better one.One person can make a differenee.

    The GLRR sponsored oreonducted four new events in 1985.Can you add other new ones to the1986 calendar? The four eventswere: the establishment of theCompetitive Team, the Hash HouseHarriers Run, the Women's TrackTraining, and the Wang-GLRRCross Country Meet. In 1985, theelub also had a highly successfulfund raising drive -- the BermudaRaffle.

    members who make a significanteontribution to running when it wasneeded. TOM AMIRO and WILLMASON received this award foreo-coaching the women's racingprogrhm last summer and forheading-up the male open and malemasters divisions of theeompetitive team. SUELAMONTAGNE received this awardfor being race director of the GreatLegs Road Race, mnning last year'spot luck supper, and for heading-upthe female open division of thecompetitive team.     Special Proiect of the YearED STOTT was the recipient of

    this award for his work with thehighly successful Bermuda Raffle.Ed, who also headed the Budget andPinance Committee, conceived andexecuted the raffle which was theclub's largest "non-raee" moneymalcer for 1985.

    Outstanding Contributor to GLRRDAVE CAMIRE received this

    KEEPING MOTIYATED-Tom Amiro

    Chelmsford -- Whatever yourreason is for running, whether it befor fun, health, or competition, youmay someday reach a point whereyou need to renew yourmotivation. Perhaps your racetimes have stopped dropping byIeaps and bounds, or maybe you areno longer challenged by yourpresent variety of nuuring. When

    this occurs, it is time to startworking at making running moreinteresting.

    I've found the best way tomotivate myself is by trying toeontinually set personal records.By records I do not necessarilymeal speed improvements. Arunning record can be anlrthing youhave never done before during yourrunning career. For example, oneof my recent records was sevenstraight days of no running.

    The first thing you have to do isto keep a mnning log. Without alog book you can't tell whetheryou're doing the same old thing ornot. You might think keeping adetailed log is the surest way tomake your running less spontaneousand interesting. Not so!Remember Mr. Mason's articleabout runners being such creatunesof habit. Logless nrnners still nrnthe same routes at the same pace,with the same people, and so on.

    Once you keep track of whatyou a^re doing you can set all sortsof records. Here's a list ofpossibilities:

    I Conseeutive days with 2 ormore mns.

    I Most races in a year, week,or day.

    I Longest interval betweenraces, between days off.

    I HighesL mileage in a singleyear, week, day, or run.

    t Highest number of milesunder a certain pace (e.9.,6 minute pace) per week,day, or run.

    I Fastest time on a 20 miletraining run.

    I Fastest times for clistancesfrom 100 yards to 50 miles.

    I Fastest times on favoritepersonal eourses.Highest number of runsover a eertain distanee (say15 miles) in a month, week,or day.Most number of differentroutes run in a single week.Most nurnber of miles onthe track, quarters, halves,miles, etc.Shortest or longest timebetween marathons,

    You don't have to set a recordintentionally. In reviewing your logyou may discover something newand record worthy. Ab the veryleast, you'll have lots of statisticsat the tip of your tongue to unloadin eonversation with other numers.

    If your motivation starts towane, set a new objective ar.rd shootfor it. For awhile it will give yousomething to mn for. For example,you eould choose to rrn a personalbest for 2 miles on the track. TheGLRR 2-mile series, which is heldiluring the summer months, is aperfect vehicle for helping you tomeet this objective.

    For the very seriouscompetitive nulner, motivation isno less a concern than for a fun orhealth corscious runner,Maintaining high internity trainingyear after year becomeswearisome. You can't just set onegoal like "getting faster." Youcanrt just follow the "more andmore" philosophy either. Therecomes a time when setting a newweekly mileage record is counterproductive to better mming.Winning the race, or beating yourarch rival, or setting a PR timeprovides some reinforcement, but itisn't enough. The more littleobjeetives you set and aehievealong the way, the easier it will beto keep motivated.

  • PREPING FOR BOSTON

    Tradition would have us believethat in spring a young man's fancyturns to love and the fair sex. Ifthis wdre true, then on PatriotsDay the BAA Marathon wouldconsist of a bunch of old galootschasing old maids down highway 16dressed in nothing more thanbombay bloomers, cotton singlets,and old tennis shoes dragged out ofgnanny's closet. The rest of uswould have long ago abandoned thatuseless 26.2 mile trek for moremeaningful endeavors like wooingfair maitlens in yonder shoppingmall.

    In reality, sensibility prevails.We pursue dreams according to ourmode of living. -We arsnot-eraz"res-*to want to talce part in up to 2lmile rurs eaeh Sunday morning forthe so called glory of staggeringaeross a finish line that has beencrossed, cused, or caxessed bYhundreds before us. The marathonbecomes a very serious business formany who seek to personally excelin competition, so much so thateven diets and speeial trainingschedules have been adopted.

    Here is one such plar t wouldlike to share. Be wary though, thissehedule is not for everyone. If youare aiming for the 2:40's its asuggestion. Will Mason and TomAmiro have adaptations of this

    schedule. Will tells me hismaximum for any week is 80 milesand that he follows the "fast onWednesday" regime. On the otherhand, Tom prefers the 130 mile Perweek gruel and eats all Lhe time.Whatever your training, during yourfinal week run a little over halfyour highest mileage Per week.

    As for diet, I discovered thefollowing diet in a Monlrealnewspaper while in that city for the'82 marathon. I performed minorsurgery on it to suit my particularhabits. The bottom line!Experiment unlil you havesomething you think is suecessfuland use it. If you perform badlyyou can always blame thet'experimental" diet or the lastweek of training.

    In what has become an a^reatradition for loeal runners, thefamous "Fudgical 5K Series" ofraces has started over irrTewksbury. Sponsored by theGLRR, these weekly 5K races areheld every Saturday morning duringJanuary, February, and Marehregardless of weather conditions.Each race starts at l0 a.m. fromthe enlrance to Tewksbury HighSchool. The entry-fee is 25 cents.Now this is what you get for thequarter: (l) ar official number (2)a police escort (3) a flat course (4)a chalce to make the Boston Globe

    So far, I've raced in the firstfive races a-nd can give you aninsiders view of the race. It hasdrawn an average of 65-75 mnnerswith 74 toeing the line oneSaturday. What amazed me is therange of racing ability which isattracted to this little 5K race.Some of the best runners in thearea (including southern NewHampshire) have shown up for thisrace the past two weeks. Forexample, last Saturday saw sevenrunners break 17 minutes for a

    I like the race because it servesas a good opportunity for a speedworkout. Even though it's early inthe year, it doesn'L hurt lo startlaying a good base for those5-milers and 10-K's lhis spring andsummer.

    Well, how about you? Will wesee you next Saturday? It sure is alot more fun than staying insidewatching cartoons with the kids.

    RurrnersEom all over NewEngland will be converging onGreater Lowell territory nextNovember when the GLRR will hostthe NEAC l5-K championship. TheGLRR'was awarded thechampionship at the quarterlyNEAC meeting held in Lowell onDecember 28th. In addition toindividual compeLition, the racewill feature a team eompetitionwhich will include a male open,female open, male masters, andfemale masters division. The race,under the direction of Ben !'udge, isrun on one of the most scenic aldchallenging cotrses in the Valley.It should be a great race.

    COMPETITIYE TEAM MEETING-the next nreeting is schedule

    for March 31st, 6:30 PM at theKnickerbocker Club. This is a veryimportant meeting -- all teammembers please attend! At theGeneral Meeting (at 7:30 PM) aspecial award presentation will bemade to competitive teammembers.

    SPRINGFIELD 2OK AND 25KSixteen GLRR journeyed to

    Springfield on December 15th tocompete in the final two races onthe 1985 NEAC Grand Prix Series.Despite the cold (around 20degrees) and the treacherousconditions (severe icing on theroads), the GLRR came away withtwo silvers (female open and malemasters) and one bronze (maleopen) in the team competition.Running for the male masters inbhe 25K were: Colin Gouldson (2nd),Jim Concannon (3rd), John Burke(4th), Bill Boyd, and WalterMurphy. Running for the femaleopen in the 25K were: Sue Taylor(3rtl), Sue Lamontagne, JeanBoswell (2nd), and Maureen Semekis(3rd).     by a fourth place finish of SueTaylor (3:04), finished second at theNEAC Marathon Championship heldin Newport, RI on November 3rd.Sue was followed by Jean Boswell(3:34) and Mary Bouret (3:37). Inall, seven teams competed for theteam title. Team standings areIistecl on the results page. On anindividual note, Colin Gouldsonfinished first in the Master'sdivision with a time of 2:35 and JimStair finished tenth overall with atime of 2232.

At the end, lheGLRR rarked number two in totalteam scoring with 33 points. Onlythe Central Mass Striders ofWorcester, who scored a total of 57points, were able to score moretotal points then the GLRR.Remarkably, we aecumulated thispoint totat despite not winning asingle individual title.
