All Junior regattas take place on the marine lake in West Kirby on the Friday nights before.

Race Officer Recap

As a reminder, a nominated Race Officer has:‐ The responsibility (under Rule 2) for doing the duty as set out in the 

Handbook; or providing a replacement and The Authority (under Rule 3) of the Sailing Committee in all matters except 

for deciding Protests and Cancelling Races

Make sure you pick up a key to the starters room, at least the day before. If you are unable to please contact a flag officer or the Sailing Secretary/Assistance Sailing Secretary

If possible speak to competitors to find out what they want, and give them an idea of what you are planning, e.g. which end of the lake.

Dinghies On the Lake

All the kit you need will be in the starters room. Make sure that you pick up the 3 minute Autohoot

Give yourself time to decide which end of the lake you are going to be starting from and make sure you have time to get there.

If conditions are severe and you need a safety boat please contact the captain. Try and get some volunteers from the racing fleet (If it is that windy some won’t want to sail anyway!)

Dinghies on the Tide

You will need the tidal flag roll and the 5 minute autohoot.

Make sure that you speak to the duty boatman and that you know who is your safety boat driver.

You need to make sure that you have a working VHF radio and that you know how to use it.

Explain to the safetyboat crew what you intend to do Melodee will be in place with racing buoys onboard.

Preparations

Start time minus 1‐2 hours– Arrive at Club with latest forecast– Note wind direction at Club– Unlock/prepare equipment– Check all boat crews have arrived and that they 

have checked their craft and its equipment– Check that all starting equipment is in order– Complete radio checks– Check wind again– From forecast and current observation predict wind 

strength and direction at start‐time– If too strong/light prepare to postpone

Starting Procedures

Tidal – Starting intervals should be at 5 minutes Lake – Starting intervals should be at 3 minutes There is a separate autohoot system for lake and tidal use.

At minus 6 minutes to the first start  – Sound an attention sound signal

Recalls

Individual RecallIf there are boats over the line you should make ONE additional sound signal.

The flag should be lowered when all the boats have returned to the correct side of the line, or no longer than 4 minutes.

General  RecallIf there are more  boats over the line than you can identify you should make TWO additional sound signals

The flag should be lowered one minute before the next sound signal. 

Postponement 

• If you need to postpone a start (e.g. lack of wind, fleet not ready) then you should raise the Answering Pennant accompanied by TWO sound signals.

• This should be lowered with ONE sound signal ONE minute before the next warning signal.

Shortening Course

Course shortening is done by raising Code Flag S, together with the appropriate Class Flag(s) and making 2 sound signals. This is traditionally when the leading boat in the race has just rounded the last mark.

On the lake races are “Open ended” in other words there are no fixed number of laps. It is up to the race officer to decide when to shorten the course. This should be done when boats have rounded the marks which have been highlighted on the course cards in bold and underlined.

Length of Race

Races should in general be around 45 minutes long. If running 2 races, make the first race shorter than the second.

Always keep an eye out for the boats at the back of the fleet. They will dictate what time the next start will be.

– postponing• speak to Sailing Sec or Vice Commodore and Class Capt.• then make your own decision 

At the end of the day

Make sure that you put all of the kit away. If any of it is missing or broken please let Gordon Tennant(Official Starter) know so that it can be rectified quickly.

Write up your results neatly, put one copy in the holders in the club foyer and one in the starters room.

Be aware that if there is a mistake with the results then it is up to the competitor to speak to the race officer who should then bring it to the attention of the sailing secretary.

And finally……

If you’ve done a really good job….someone will buy you a drink.

If not.. Buy yourself one.

Dutyman will send you an email to remind you that you have a race duty 7 days and 3 days before the date.

It is important to make sure that we have your current email address.

The system allows you to swap your duties with other people.
