DESCRIBE THE PRESENT AND ORIGINAL (IF KNOWN) PHYSICAL APPEARANCE
Jdr. Ollie .rlowen will be 89 years old in } "' , and he has spent ::ilost of his life in Port Republic . He was born in the house next to Ben I. "Bowen' s store, and when he was six years old, his father J . Frank Bowen built the house ac oss the street from his resent home. The oldest part o~ that house was built b:r his brother _,d a.rd c . 1912. Edward L . .3owen op er at ed Ben I. Bowen's store during the 1920 1 s and 1930 1 s .
The house which J . Frank Bowen built in the 1890 1 s wao built on an existing , .farm. The barn on the hill west of the house was already there , as was a "tenant house" which has long since been destroyed. Ollie says that his father built the snall b rn in the holiow north of the hous • J . Frank Bowen ' s hou3e is of frame construction and is very typical with its cross- gable front facade (3ast) that is three bays in width with a central entrance. This same side exhibits a 1i bay porch. The main block is two stories in height and is one bay deep. A single story kitchen addition in the rear (West) gives the building an L-plan.
The symmetr _ca ... l y placed winao.vs are 6/6.
The space heaters which warmed the house were serviced by an interior flue chimney on the north end of the building. A smaller chimney served the same purpose on the west end of the kitchen.
To b-..cc o Barn :
This is a nine room barn which has 10 1 tree- post sheds on the west , south, and eaat sides. The "1l8in portion has a post- and- beam frame which utilizes angle braces with open- face dovetail joints tha.t are mortise-and- tenoned and held with trunnels . The members of this heavy frame exhibit vertical a marks where in the sheds circul.ir nawn materials wore seen.
2 1 studding with nail holes in it suggests that clapboards originally covered the exterior walls.
Early strap hinges have been used as broces for the footing of the sOtJthwest corner posts of t~e shed.
