BIOGRAPHY OF VINCENT VAN GOGH (I)

Vincent Van Gogh was born on 30th March 1853 at Zundert near Breda in Holland.

He was the son of a Dutch pastor. He lived a quiet life with his father, Theodorus, his mother, Anna Cornelia and his five brothers and sisters. He was brought up in a religious and cultured atmosphere.

Between 1860 and 1880, when he finally decided to become an artist, Van Gogh worked as a clerk in a bookstore, as an art salesman and a preacher in a mining district in Belgium, that undermined his health.

He travelled to France, in Belgium, and in the U.K.

BIOGRAPHY OF VINCENT VAN GOGH (II)

When he was in Belgium he studied art and

produces the most famous paintings of his early

period “The Potatoes Eaters” in 1885.

Next year he went to Paris to join his brother Theo

who was a gallery manager. He met Pissaro, Monet

and Gaugin.

A few years later Van Gogh decided to go South to

Arles. Unfortunately his mental health deteriorated

and he ended up cutting his ear lobe off. As a result

he was sent to the asylum in Saint-Remy for

treatment.

BIOGRAPHY OF VINCENT VAN GOGH (III)

After a couple of years in the asylum he went to live

in Auvers-sur-Oise where he died from a self-

inflicted gunshot.

During his brief career the artist did not experience

much success and lived in poverty. His finest

paintings were produced in less then three years in

a unique technique impassioned in brushstroke, in

symbolic and intence colour and in movement of

form and line.

COURSE OF WORK

Realism

Pupils studied the work of the British artist Constable

and created paintings with clouds inspired by his work.

School of Barbizon

Vincent Van Gogh was influenced in his early years by the School of Barbizon and its earthly palette. Barbizon was a small village near Paris where young artists gathered in order to study nature. Students were shown works of Millet, Corout, Rousseau and a maquette inspired by one of Millet’s painting was created.

Impressionism Van Gogh’s style changed when he visited Paris and was deeply influenced

by the impressionists. The movement and light prominent in the

impressionist painters changed the style of his work.

Students were shown paintings by the impressionist painter Monet and

selected one of his paintings to study in color.

COMBINATION OF COLOURS

Andricopoulos Giorgos

I like to combine colours. That’s why my

painting is full of bright and dark colours. Van

Gogh’s painting “Starry Night” inspired me to

draw a beautiful and colorful painting. I hope

you like this painting.

LOST IN THE STARS

Diamantopoulou Athina

My painting is inspired from Van Gogh’s

painting “Starry Night”. The sky and

especially the stars made me a great

impression. Therefore I enlarged my painting

and I focused mainly on the sky and the

stars.

LIFE AFTER DEATH

Doganis Alexandros

I wanted to do this painting because I saw a painting of Van Gogh “Starry Night” and I liked the way he made it. Ig was a fantastic experience for me to try and do something similar. That painting gives us different messages but I received the one of the after life after death.

DAY NIGHT

Doudounis Ioannis

On the background there is a starry night. On

the bottom of the painting there is a tree.

CANDLE OF LIFE

Zacharatou Nicoletta

My painting is based on Van Gogh’s painting which presents the well-being of life after death through colours and thoughts. I tried to communicate a message of life. With the stars I tried to symbolize every life on earth, with the quiet mountains, the serenity and peace there are on it.

THE WORLD OF COLORS

Giorgos Kallios

My painting has a lot of combinations of

colours, such as blue, black, yellow, white,

e.t.c. I was trying to draw a beautiful sky and

a beautiful landscape with houses and a tall

tree. I wanted to make colourful

combinations. Although my painting has cold

colours, I wanted my painting to look brighter.

NIGHT IN THE FOREST

Kapsali Maria-Evagelia

My painting is an inspiration from the painting of Van Gogh “Starry Night”. The colours are mixed and there aren’t any bright colours. The changes of blue show the calmness of the sky as well as the anxiety of people. The plants symbolize the serenity of nature and the stars represent the calm side of the sky. The movement of the wind symbolizes the life of people as well as the changes in the world

CONNECTION WITH THE IMPOSSIBLE

Kontokalou Marialena

Everything seemed to me so small but at the same time so big. While painting my picture I realized that everything is even, that everybody is equal. This painting also demonstrates that nothing is impossible unless you believe in it. You can travel with your mind, as well as with your heart but mostly with your beliefs. This painting expresses my beliefs and my feelings.

MY COLORWORD

Michaella-Marina Lambrou

My painting reminds of a fantastic picture

which has lots of colours. I designed whirling

lines like spinning comets into a blue sky with

white spots.

DESERTED MEADOW

Lebreton Melina

In my painting I tried to design a deserted

meadow. But in that deserted meadow there

was movement, therefore there was life.

THE PEACE OF THE NIGHT

Margaritis Konstantinos

My painting is inspired from Van Gogh’s

painting “Starry Night”. The brushes are

stroke to show the movement and the colors

are a mix from the original painting. The

moon is shinny to light up the landscape. All

those elements demonstrate the peace of the

night.

THE DANCE OF THE STARS

Papadimitroulou Catherine

I have enlarged an aspect of Van Gogh’s

painting “Starry Night”, where the stars seem

to dance. The older ones learn how to dance

to the younger ones. Every night a new star

joins them, when a person loses his life.

PURPLE STARS

Paraschou Vicky

My painting shows purple stars that meet for

the first time a lonely cypress

MOVEMENT CREATES LIFE

Petrakis Antony

I decided to give this title to my painting because the colours I used create a vivid motion that is very important for the function of the universe. Also a mountain connects earth to the sky. This is not by chance. On the mountain there is a cemetery where the bodies rest in peace. I liked a lot the combination of the colours of the original painting. So I decided to make a similar painting.

LIGHT IN THE DARK

Pire Alexandros

This painting is an inspiration from Van Gogh’s painting “Starry Night”, but I added some of my own ideas. This painting I think that wants to show us many things like the linking of the sky with earth, the linking of the sun with the moon too. Also it wants to demonstrate life after death.

HOUSES IN THE SKY

Protonotariou Panagiota

My painting was inspired from Van Gogh’s

painting “Starry Night”. My painting is mad of

cold colors and symbolizes the sky which is

connected to Earth. This means that in the

sky there are houses and trees.

THE BEAUTY OF THE SEA

Totosi Dimitra

My painting is inspired from Van Gogh’s “Starry

Night”. The colours are bright. My painting

shows small boats in the sea that travel through

the life of people. The sun, the cactus of the

deseart, the animals create a calm atmosphere.

The reflection of the light on the water and the

transformations of nature was my inspiration.

SKY FULL OF STARS

Mariastella Tsimpidi

My painting is based on the wonderful and

colourful painting of Van Gogh’s “Starry

Night”. I paid great attention to the sky, which

was full of shinny stars. I decided to depict

the sky with a nice blue color.

A BEAUTIFUL NIGHT

Feradouros Giorgos

I painted the moon and the stars on the sky. I

drew a castle and a lake.
