answers perhaps something can be done, that works for everybody, but if the people are not going to be loyal to their positions in this group you have the right to resign we don’t ask anybody to feel they can’t work is a good environment. You may be missed, but the badmouthing will not be and those who remain or take the position will try their best to do things right. If you feel there are not enough trek courses try writing some it is easy to complain, but not so easy to do anything about it. Those people who continue to badmouth the Academy from within may not have to worry about having something to complain about, I have people waiting to take on positions that become available and will gladly do so. People outside the Academy and many of the Directors are totally unaware of the messages that come in from students who want subjects. Think about what you might see at a real Starfleet Academy. Is it all studies about other races or ship design, or who was in what episode, no there is engineering, math, sciences and even culture and recreation. would you want a Captain who could not understand how a deflector works, or how to explain art to a visiting Alien or try to understand them. You have to be well rounded and understanding more than that you push a button and go. We have been trying to work out a system that replaces the one which was falling apart. The people who are doing the upgrades are trying their best to make it into something that will function to its best, make the average member happy with a system which they can use. I don’t want to say that we are sitting on our hands and not addressing concerns of the students, but the people who work within have to be ready to use new things and new systems.

Continued on next page

It has come to my attention that there are people who are members of the STARFLEET Academy staff who for one reason or another feel they can only bad mouth the Academy, and have taken this to other people or groups and instead of trying to work within the Academy want to involve the Admiralty Board, in the workings of the Academy. These are people who if they can’t have it their own way can’t try something else, who if things can’t be done their way it has to be wrong. It has been an understanding for many years that if there is a problem we will work out the problems in house. We have felt that the people who could u n d e r s t a n dthe problems, are the people who work with the things, not those people who have no idea what the Directors and Deans do. There was a sense honor and pride as well as privacy for things said in and about the Academy by its staff. These things we keep in the group, that what happens in the Academy stays here and we take care of the problems ourselves. If the people who are doing the badmouthing, and (yes I know who they are) can’t take their concerns to the Academy administration how do they think somebody outside will help. If these people will address their concerns to me and let me seek out the truth and honest

ACADEMY MONITOR - SUMMER 2017 3

If you can’t work or change you serve no one. Some people will remember the old system where everything was done by mail, that evolved with the internet but even that is again evolving because the system could not handle the volume of courses ask for by the membership.

Now because some people are not getting their way and have not given the evolving system a chance or even try to use it they want to yell and scream about problems that at this time do not exist or help clear upan existing problem, I have not had a lot of direct involvement with the tech side but I am willing to ask and I see problems being worked our. and I have found new members interested in the courses and the way to request them. they like the idea that they can download the material when they have the time and interact with systems they are happy with. The badmouthing out of control and is getting people involved who have not any idea what is involved, who don’t bother to take a course, trek or otherwise or even looked at the new system before they condemn things. the loudest complaints are that there are not trek courses any more. This I know to be untrue as a vast majority of colleges have some trek or science fiction even the New medical Institute has 3 colleges just covering medicine in trek, all people have to do is look through the list of courses, but they would rather yell without knowing facts. So to those who want to badmouth

the way things are being done, or want to complain be sure you are going to be the person helping to solve the problems not the person who wants to sit back and complain because you are uninformed or can’t adjust to life in this days of new and different thing, because the membership does not need people who can’t work with others.

Finally, I wish to thank the members of the Academy IT team who are working very hard on the Moodle project. I know there is so much you do we never know about.

Basic requirements are to be at least 18 years of age and have taken OTS and SAOC. Cadets at least 14 years of age may serve with an adult mentor.

To assume a vacancy, you must pass all of the exams in the College, or if a College of 35 to 60 exams, 75% of the exams. Colleges over 60 exams are tested out at 50% with a maximum of 50 exams required.

Assistant Directors must meet the same requirements as the Director.

To direct a College of your own creation, first check the College Catalogue to make certain your idea is not already being used.

If the concept is not being used elsewhere, submit a College outline, exam, and key to the Course Development Contact, Carol Thompson, at [email protected].

Carol will determine where your College fits within the Academy structure and introduce you to your Dean who will lead you through the approval process.

SO YOU WANT TO BE A DIRECTOR??

ACADEMY MONITOR - SUMMER 2017 19

Interview byAdmiral Patricia Lewis

PL: Chad, thank you for agreeing to be our Starfleet Academy Director featured this issue in “Getting to Know You” in the Academy Monitor. I must start out with the standard question, because I love to hear the huge variety of answers, how did you get introduced to the television show Star Trek?

CG: I was actually introduced to Star Trek by my father, along with shows such as Battlestar Galactica, Mission Impossible, and others. I remember running home after school to watch my cartoons and then when

they were over, I would do my homework for 45 minutes and then I would, once again, quickly flip on the tv and watch Star Trek

Which is your favorite of the different Trek movies and series. Do you read the Star

Trek novels or comics?

That is a hard one. I know this is a touchy subject with some but I actually have enjoyed all the series and movies. I have some of the IDW comics and older DC comics and have read many of the books, of which, my favorite is ‘Excalibur’.

Go to any conventions? Have you met any of the Trek actors or guest stars?

I actually would go to many of the big conventions up till a couple years ago and have met many Star Trek actors and guests. It was really great talking to William Shatner for 35 minutes and getting

a knuckle bump from him at Chiucago Wizard World 2015, but I will never forget meeting James Doohan in 1991 while visting a friend at Paramount. I actually almost ran into him but he spotted me and put his hand on my shoulder and in traditional

“Scotty” told me that my ‘vintage’ (I was in my Navy Dress Whites) uniform was nice but this is 2293 and I needed to get into proper dress ‘Laddy’. I just stood there a bit dumbfounded as he shook my hand and walked off.

How did you find out about the STARFLEET International Fan Club, and what made you want to join?

I had heard of it many times over the years from many people. One night I was watching an episode of Star Trek TOS and I suddenly remembered the fan club. I searched it out online and figured, why not join and I am glad I did.

What interested you about STARFLEET Academy? What courses did you start out taking?

I am what my friends call the “Geeky Nerd” because I actually enjoyed school and taking exams. What caught me was the wide assortment of colleges and exams available. I started taking random exams and when I found one I really enjoyed, I just kept taking them.

20 ACADEMY MONITOR - SUMMER 2017

Inside the Academy Walls Continued from page 19

When and how did you become a Director?

I remember an email went out looking for Academy staff and I thought “Why Not!” Now fortunately the one I wanted I did not get because I was offered an Assistant position with Doctor Who and then shortly after that I became the Director for Battlestar Galactica and just recently Star Wars and Abnormal Psychology.

Tell us something else you would like your colleagues to know about you.

I am also the SO aboard the USS Matrix NCC-72296, which working with the Academy has helped me start to rebuild our Matrix University. I also do ALOT of charity work as a Ghostbuster, and yes I have the Proton Pack ... hence the call-sign “Ghostbuster”.

Let’s close the interview in the same fashion as James Lipton does on Inside the Actors Studio, with an Academy

twist, Inside the Academy Walls…

What is your favorite STARFLEET Academy subject? Doctor Who!

What is your least favorite STARFLEET Academy subject? Hmmmm ... Well so far I don’t have one.

Who is your favorite nemesis in the world of Star Trek? Khan Noonien Singh

What is your all-time favorite Star Trek episode out of all the series?

TOS: Mirror, Mirror ... If I have to choose one

What is your least favorite Star Trek episode out of all the series?

Ones that are interrupted with stupid news :)

If you could be any alien race we’ve seen in Star Trek, what would you be? Half Vulcan ... I like my human emotions!

If you could be a fly on the wall, which Star Trek actor would you like to follow around for a day?

Brent Spiner

If transporters were real, where would you transport to first?

After I tested it out on another organic??? :-D

Kirk or Spock?

Spork? I cannot say, as I cannot decide

Special thanks to CMDR Chad “Ghostbuster” Griffiths for sharing with us and playing along with Inside the Academy Walls. Any volunteers for the next issue? Email: [email protected] Patty Lewis, Asst. Editor of Academy Monitor

Wow, what a summer! It’s hard to believe where the time has gone.

Like last year, I asked if we could hold the release of this issue until after the New Orleans IC so we could be current with the annual Academy Awards announcement. Then, as usual, life steps in, and any time I could get to completing this issue was going for other real life things. It means the next issue, our Fall issue, will be coming up in just a few short weeks.

And, be sure that you log into the STARFLEET Database to download the newest Communique Supplemental Issue #2, the IC New Orleans Scrapbook issue! To Denine, Chelle, Trish, and our friends at the CQ Padded Room... great job putting these together!!

Special thanks to Chad Griffiths, Cher Schleigh, and Jayden Tyronian
