  • STAR TREK:

    The Motion Picture

    FADE IN:

    EXT. SPACE (O)1 1

An ever expanding infinity of light and color as CAMERA MOVES THROUGH deep space, MOVING DIRECTLY FOR one pin-point of light... A STAR that GROWS CLOSER RAPIDLY as we SWEEP TOWARD IT... A normal white star that SUDDENLY CHANGES, brightening, flaring, and then, as the unseen Hydrogen is sucked from the star, it becomes a RED GIANT STAR, exhausted, and burns out in seconds. As CAMERA SWEEPS RAPIDLY PAST the Reg Giant, the death of the star is more evident, as the processes run unchecked, the Helium passing out instantly, but before the Red Giant becomes a RED SUPER GIANT, we are gone... no regrets, no pity.

    CAMERA SEARCHES THE UNIVERSE, curious...

    DISSOLVE TO:

    EXT. SPACE MONTAGE1A 1A

CAMERA CONTINUING TO TRAVEL past a vast colorful nebu-la, then thru the star expanse of a vast hydrogen cloud, past more stars.

Then thru still a different nebula, more star fields. Its all brief but leaving the impression weretravelling a vast distance.

    EXT. EARTH APPROACH1B 1B

A point of light directly ahead, rapidly growing in size, taking shape, then becoming planet Earth. CAMERA CONTINUES hurtling toward Earth which grows within seconds from a tiny dot into the familiar blue, clouded globe which then fills the screen. CAMERA CONTINUES, PLUMMETING DOWN toward what we can recognize as the Northern coastline of Africa -- still travelling toward Earth so fast that the Egyptian coastline is already filling the screen.

    DISSOLVE TO:

    EXT. EGYPTIAN CITY - DAY (M)(O)1C 1C

Slowly panning across the landscape, we see the Nile valley. The city looks as it would have centuries ago, save for the occasional shuttle sprinting through the sky.

    (CONTINUED)

  • In the distance, we can hear the sounds of activities -- people talking, ships flying, ect. Over this, we SUPER:

    ALEXANDRIA, EGYPTSTARDATE 7340.1

We continue to pan until we center on a particular building.

    EXT. MUSEUM - DAY (M)(O)1D 1D

A large, ornate sandstone building that has many figures carved into the superstructure. Surrounding it are dozens of trees - some indigenous to the area, perhaps some foreign; far more lush than the city is in our time. In the f.g., people, dressed in civilian clothing, maybe some Starfleet, are walking around, having conversations, admiring the building, ect.

    CONTINUED:1C 1C1A.

  • INT. MUSEUM EXHIBITION HALL - DAY1E 1E

A great hall inside the museum. Light spills in through the plate-glass windows lining the outer wall of the room. Many displays, paintings, and artifacts line the walls. A few n.d. tour groups are in the b.g.

    INT. RESEARCH ROOM - DAY1F 1F

Lines of consoles populate the spacious room. A few of the consoles are occupied by scholars performing research. Camera CLOSES IN on a particular pair of researchers:

    JAMES T. KIRK1G 1G

Sitting at a computer console, studying the screen. Hes in casual clothing, not looking very much different than he did during his time in the Captains chair. Next to him stands a young LIBYAN STUDENT; in his 20s, black hair, thin. Kirk suddenly jolts up, looking concerned and puzzled. The student turns to Kirk:

    STUDENT(concerned)

    Is something wrong, Admiral Kirk?

This knocks Kirk out of his daydream. He turns and shakes his head distractedly. Kirk sits back down, attempting to look like hes trying to watch the screen.

    DISSOLVE TO:

    EXT. SPACE (O)(S)1H 1H

Our view is initially blurred, as if a half-remembered daydream. After a moment, things begin to focus -- the blue-black of space envelops us. We begin to get the impression that were seeing images from Kirks mind. Our view searches the void of space once more, but with a clear purpose.

    (CONTINUED)

    2.

  • (NOTE: Whats happening here is that Kirk is re-ceiving an emergency transmission from Starfleetthrough a transceiver device implanted into his brain. Perhaps to make this idea clearer, add read-outs around the edges of the view and maybe nar-ratives from Starfleet -- announcing the trans-mission).

We stop, and passing our POV:

    OMITTED2 2

    KLINGON BATTLE CRUISERS (O)(S)3 3

In a graceful, turning arc toward the mysterious LUMINESCENCE. CAMERA FOLLOWS this Klingon, then FINDS a second Klingon cruiser, also turning toward the Cloud, which continues to grow in size as the Klingonsapproach it at warp speed, CAMERA CLOSING on the lead ship, until the vessels detail can be clearly MADE OUT: lights, weaponry, power systems, identification emblazoned on the nacelles and saucer in Klingonlanguage (and symbols).

Now, we begin to see the patrol form into a triangular formation as they continue the graceful turning arc toward the camera. We FOLLOW with the cruisers as they come to:

EXT. AREA OF LUMINESCENCE (O)(S)3A 3A

In the far distance, slowly growing in size as the cruisers approach: it resembles, vaguely at this distance, an Aurora Borealis: flaring colors from the fringes, beautiful yet ominous. It is so large, this Cloud, it can envelope an entire solar system.

    OMITTED4&5 4&5

EXT. SPACE - KLINGON PATROL AND THE HAZE (O)6 6

The Patrol is clearly SEEN now on the right bottom of the FRAME... THREE tiny ships closing on the steadily growing LUMINESCENT HAZE.

    OMITTED7-9 7-9

EXT. SPACE - LEAD KLINGON VESSEL (TORPEDO HATCH) (O)(S)10 10

Sliding open, the glowing "Hell Fire" of the Photon Launch tubes, slowly revealed.

    CONTINUED:1H 1H3.

  • VERY WIDE ANGLE - THE THREE SHIPS (O)(S)11 11

They are tiny, insect-like shapes moving still CLOSER to the Luminescent Cloud, so large now that it begins to dominate all space behind.

    OMITTED12 12

EXT. SPACE - ANGLE ON KLINGON VESSEL - TORPEDO HATCH 13 13(O)(S)

The BRILLIANT PHOTON BLOBS of the torpedoes spurt from the tubes.

    OMITTED14 14

    EXT. CLOUD (O)(S)15 15

The torpedoes are heading directly toward the Cloud. Suddenly they glow briefly and disappear long before they reach their intended target. A few moments pass, then a deep thunder-like noise emanates from the cloud.

    OMITTED16-18 16-18

EXT. SPACE - THE CLOUD - THE KLINGON PATROL (O)19 19

Out of the LUMINESCENCE hurtles a FRIGHTENING WHIPLASH OF ENERGY. It bears down on the Klingon Patrol, now in an evasive maneuver. Then, the WHIPLASH BOLT hits the lead cruiser, enveloping it in lashes of wild, green energy. The cruiser is seemingly crushed, then implodes into nothingness! The other cruisers hesitate, then:

ANGLE ON REMAINING KLINGON CRUISERS (S)20 20

Desperately defending themselves, FORCEFEILDS FULL UP, RAPIDLY FIRING PHOTON TORPEDOES. But now a SECOND WHIPLASH ENERGY BOLT has emerged from the cloud and hits the second vessel, DESTROYING IT.

The THIRD WHIPLASH BOLT glances off the surviving Cruiser as the ship retreats in a wide, evasive turn, FIRING from stern tubes.

    OMITTED21 21

    4.

  • KLINGON DESTRUCTION (O)(S)21A 21A

Showing EXTERIOR of the Klingon vessel: a final, frightening WHIPLASH ENERGY BOLT strikes it -- then the same awesome IMPLOSION INTO FIREBALL.

  • INT. MUSEUM - LIBYAN AND KIRK - DAY21B 21B

Kirk has paled, sits stunned -- he can hardly believe the disturbing images hes just seen. The student looks at Kirk, puzzled. Coming out of his daze, Kirk glances at the student, tries to shrug it off, but the trace of worry remains.

    CUT TO:

  • EXT. SURFACE OF PLANET VULCAN - DAY (M)(O)28 28

With the CAMERA MOVING THROUGH masses of thick, steamy vaporous clouds, swirling about, rising boilingly up from some unseen, underground source. The CAMERA CONTINUES MOVING through clouds.

And then... the Vulcan landscape. Harsh, strange angular peaks and rock formations -- the barren, legend-ary mountain home of Vulcan Masters.

    EXT. VULCAN LEDGE - SPOCK (M)29 29

Spocks lean features instantly recognizable despite unkempt, longer hair and the fatigue born of a long, harsh discipline he has undergone. His robes, tattered and dust covered, are that of a Vulcan Aspirant in study with the Masters. Under the Vger THEME MUSIC we HEAR a VOICE in ritual tones:

FEMALE MASTERS VOICESpock, son of Sarek of Vulcan... and Amanda of Earth, are thee prepared to open thy mind to us?

    6.

  • REVERSE ANGLE - SPOCK, VULCAN MASTERS AND RUINS (M)30 30

In b.g., gigantic ancient Vulcan statues and ruins. In f.g., the stone ruins platform on which Spock stands facing a semi-circle of three similar platforms. On them, in regal robes and bearing, are three VULCAN MASTERS. They are very old, very elegant, the Master in the center a female, the other two Masters are male. The elderly female is holding a cord and ancient pen-dant as if ready to place it around Spocks neck at an appropriate moment. Spock is staring up as Vger THEME MUSIC fades. Spock turns, giving a small contrite nod -- the ritual continues.

    SPOCKI am prepared.

FEMALE MASTERHere on these sands, our forbearers cast out their animal passions, hence forever devoting their minds to logic...

Vger THEME MUSIC BEGINS TO PEAK as Spock, distracted by the something far away (which we associate with THEME MUSIC), Spock raises his head and scans the sky and space beyond. At this, the Masters VOICE stops; she looks at Spock, puzzled. They look at each other, then:

    MALE MASTER 1(chidingly)

    Spock!

Spock quickly looks back to the masters. He tries to compose himself, but cant focus.

A faint reprise of the Vger THEME MUSIC now causes the Female Master to look skyward. She turns from this back to Spock as she exchanges a look with the Male Masters.

    FEMALE MASTER(curious)

Spock, our minds have felt that far-off "presence." Has it special meaning to you?

    Spock nods. The master thinks, realizes what she must do, then;

    FEMALE MASTER(reluctantly)

Spock, your thoughts. Open them to me.

Spock leans forward slightly -- she lays her hands on his temples in Vulcan mind-meld position.

    (CONTINUED)

    7.

  • Their eyes close -- their minds meld -- then her head jerks slightly, her features change as her mind feels Spocks reactions to the Vger consciousness. A long moment, then she opens her eyes, gets to her feet and looks down on the still kneeling Spock.

FEMALE MASTERYour answer lies elsewhere, Spock.

The Vger THEME MUSIC fades in as we:

    EXT. FEDERATION COMPLEX - DAY (M)(O)31A 31A

As a Federation AIR TRAM (an anti-gravitational train flying several feet above the ground) glides INTO FRAME.

We PAN WITH the shuttle as it flies over the densely packed complex. It goes straight to a small building loaded down with transmission equipment. The tram circles around the rear of the building, and sets down.

    EXT. TRANSMISSION BUILDING - DAY31B 31B

We PAN ACROSS the side of the shuttle and stop at the entry hatch. The hatch opens revealing Kirk, in Admirals uniform now. He shows a grim determination on his face as he strides from the craft.

    EXT. TRANSMISSION BUILDING - MAIN ENTRANCE31C 31C

Kirk walks up to the door and stops briefly. He com-poses himself and straightens his uniform. He walks into the doors sensor range, and they open to admit him.

    INT. HOLOCOM ROOM - DAY31D 31D

The doors open and Kirk comes in. The room is bare except for a seat with a computer console next to it. He sits down in the chair and presses a button.

    CLOSE ON A COMPUTER SCREEN31E 31E

A man appears on the screen after a moment.

KIRKAdmiral Kirk, Operator. Request verification --

  • OPERATOR(interrupting kindly)

Yes, sir, I understand. Please stand by for a moment.

The operators image fades. Another soft hum is heard. Kirk waits for the operator to appear. He is about to place a call again as the viewer flickers and the operator appears on the screen again.

OPERATORGib comcon, I have an Admiralty staff officer requesting holocomcontact with you. Stand by, please.

WIDE ANGLE - KIRK AND LORI (O)31F 31F

As the image of a stunningly beautiful woman appears in front of Kirk. The woman is Vice Admiral Lori Ciana. For a hologram, the image is strikingly real. Lori softly smiles at Kirk. There is an air of sexual tension between the two.

    LORIHello, Jim.

    KIRK(to the point)

    Whats happening, Lori?

LORIAdmiral Nogura knew youd be calling and he asked me to verify the alert.

A moment passes as Lori figures out what happened.

LORIHow well did the implant signal come through?

KIRKIf a huge cloud thing just ripped three Klingon heavies apart, I received it fine. Someone did a good job of infiltrating our drones into that formation.

    LORI(nods)

Commander Branch at Epsilon Nine.I have the entire signal ready if youd like a direct look at it.

As hes about to speak he stops -- hes troubled about the whole situation. Lori frowns slightly.

    8A.

  • LORIIf youre wondering why fleetdeployment hasnt been discussed with you, Jim, its because the Intruder is headed this way at warp seven.

    KIRK(aghast)

    Warp seven?

    LORI(nods)

Which is why you havent been ordered to report here, Jim. We havent even a light cruiser within interception range.

KIRKStill, there must be something I can...

LORIOf course Admiral Nogura isanxious to have the benefit of your space experience. Which is why he assigned me to give you a look at the original transmission. Any comments or guesses you might have, Im to relay them to him immediately.

    KIRKLets see the transmission.

    ENTIRE TRANSMISSION ROOM (O)(S)31G 31G

With that, Loris image fades and the room becomes a star field. The same images from Kirks daydream earlier are projected.

Filling the room with the 3-D images, Kirk looks visually nervous as he seems to be careening through space. Lori narrates as the images are projected.

LORIOur science teams theory... isthat the cloud itself may be a powerfield generated by something inside at the heart of it.

    KIRKShit!

    CONTINUED:31F 31F8B.

  • PREVIOUS ANGLE (O)31H 31H

The star field fades and the room returns. Kirk begins to relax. Loris image reappears.

    LORI(carefully)

Jim, there is one starship that might be... positioned in time to pull off an interception.

Kirk understands completely but keeps his expression blank.

    LORI(continuing)

The Enterprise, Jim. Theres a chance they can get her out of the orbital dockyards in time.

    KIRKAnd?

    LORIThe commanding admiral...

    KIRKMeaning Nogura, of course...

LORIOf course. Hes ordered everyone available from your old crew aboard. That will give Captain Decker the best --

    KIRKCaptain Decker?

LORIYes. You recommended they give the Enterprise to him, didnt you? Hell have the top crew in Starfleet, people already accustomed to working together...

KIRKAnd Nogura was worried that I might want to take her out myself?

LORIWell... no. Certainly, youll agree that the Enterprise has been completely rebuilt and refitted that shes not the same ship you were so familiar with. Your protg...

  • KIRKDecker.

LORIYes. Hes been aboard eighteen months now; hes intimately familiar with every change...

KIRKHe knows the design changes, her new systems, like no one in the fleet could possibly know them.

    LORIThats right, Jim.

KIRKThank you, Lori. Mind if I close down this console now? Ive an appointment and Im already running late for it.

    CUT TO:

EXT. SAN FRANCISCO - HILLTOP AIR TRAM STATION - DAY33 33

From this vantage, we can SEE all of twenty-third century San Francisco stretched out before us. In the b.g., the familiar forms of the carefully preserved Golden Gate Bridge and Transamerica Pyramid Building serve as our only reminders that this is, indeed, San Francisco.

The air tram DECELERATES sharply, silently, as it nears the station, then slides in and settles to the ground with a whisper.

EXT. TRAM STATION - CLOSE ON TRAM DOORS - DAY34 34

The doors opening, and various TRAVELERS (civilians and Starfleet personnel) leaving the tram, striding onto the platform, continuing on their respective ways. Among the departing throng:

    INT. AIR TRAM STATION - DAY36 36

as Kirk strides into the graceful Starfleet HQ building. Many PEOPLE are about, civilians and uniformed person-nel; most of them with some air of urgency. (NOTE: ALIENS interspersed among them, Vulcans, blue-skinned Andorians, high-domed Vegans, ect.) Kirk continues on when suddenly he reacts, annoyed as he sees:

    SONAK37 37

a Vulcan, Lt Commander; short, white-haired, grizzled, hurrying along. Kirk calls to him:

    KIRKCommander Sonak...!

SONAK turns with Vulcan imperturbability to face Kirk who steps toward him

    KIRK(continuing)

Have you received your appointment as Enterprise Science Officer?

    SONAK(nods)

Based, I am told, on your recommendation, Admiral. Thank you.

KIRKThen why aren't you on board?

SONAKCaptain Decker requested I complete final Science briefing here before...

    KIRK(interrupting)

Here at Starfleet...? The Enterprise is in final preparation to leave dock...

KIRKShell leave in twelve hours. Report to me aboard as soon as possible.

    SONAKTo you, sir?

    KIRK(nods firmly)

I intend to have a brief meeting with Nogura, after which I will go directly to the Enterprise.

And Kirk turns, strides purposefully away. Sonak gazes after him, one eyebrow raised quizzically.

    INT. NOGURAS OFFICE (M)(O)37A 37A

A large room, appropriate for Starfleet Commanding admiral. A highly functional desk at one end, a large holographic conference table on the other. Large viewers occupy one entire wall. One viewer contains a galaxy star map, with blinking data denoting the location of various vessels. And on another viewer is the frozen image of that final Klingon transmission: the awesomely huge LUMINESCENT CLOUD.

ADMIRAL NOGURA is alone in the room. He is a handsome greying man in his 50s (or early 60s) now sitting behind the desk, broodily eyeing Kirk, who stands before him.

NOGURAThis must be very difficult for you. Captain Decker has been something of your protg, hasnt he?

KIRKYes, sir. But I dont see how that makes it difficult. Ive recommended him for jobs in the past because he was the best man available. In this case, he is not.

Nogura thinks for a moment; the wheels in his mind running a mile a minute as he debates his answer. Abruptly, he comes to his feet.

  • NOGURAThe entire staff considered this at length, Jim. Im afraid that every point youve made has already been carefully considered.

Knowing his only chance to play his hand is now, Kirk must challenge Nogura directly:

KIRKAdmiral, these points were neither carefully nor properly considered since I was not present. And now that I am present, I submit that it is your responsibility to inform me of whatever negative arguments were made against my selection.

A tense moment between the two, Noguras eyes remain fixed on Kirks. Kirk leaves his face a mask, totally unreadable. Then:

    NOGURA(relenting)

How badly do you want her back?

    KIRK(coy)

The Enterprise? I cant deny that itll be pleasant to be back aboard her...

    NOGURA(seriously)

Jim, I am placing you on your honor. If there is the slightest chance that you are being motivated by anything other than professional considerations of intercepting whatever this is, trying to identify it, making contact with any life forms involved --

KIRKI dont understand your reference to honor, Heihachiro. I dont recall ever lying to you in the past -- and Im certain you never have to me.

That does it, no matter what happens now, Kirk knows hes won. Nogura is just as aware, leaving him frustrated.

Kirk strides in to the sleek, new transporter room. You can almost see the elation that hes trying to suppress. We PAN WITH KIRK as he walks onto the transporter pad.

The cluster is a fully-equipped dockyard engineering center and computer drafting office.

CAMERA MOVES IN AND CENTERS ON an outer "Travel Pod."

He's with a Technician, busy with a piece of complex circuitry. Then he turns, sees that it is Kirk BEAMING in here. As Kirk materializes, steps off the transporter plat- form, Scott moves quickly to him.

KIRKWhy aren't the Enterprise transporters operating, Mr. Scott?

    SCOTTA temporary problem, sir.

(carefully)Admiral, weve just been through eighteen months of redesigning and refitting. We might have launched in twenty hours. But who the hells idea was it to suddenly have her ready in twelvehours?

Scott now eyes Kirk just a little warily.

SCOTTShe needs more work, a shakedown...

    KIRK(flatly)

    Lets go.

Scott blinks in surprise, he has no idea what to do. He watches Kirk go into the pod, after a moment:

    SCOTT(relinquishing)

    Aye, sir.

    INT. POD40B 40B

Scott quickly follows him into the pod. Kirk's determined expression suggests that some chips are going to fly and Scott does not want to become one of them.

Scott hits a button on the pod panel -- the airlockdoors SLAM closed behind them. Then, stepping immedi-ately to the front observation window, Kirk continues:

KIRKMr. Scott, there's an alien object with unbelievable destructive power less than three days away from this planet...

Scott is taken aback by this but is now occupied in sealing the Outer Pod door and manipulating drive controls.

INT. TRAVEL POD - KIRK AND SCOTT44 44

    KIRK(continuing)

This object is a luminescent cloud that is heading directly toward our system. Starfleetbelieves this cloud to be a power field generated by some kind of incredible energy source at the heart of it.

Scott looks up sharply at Kirk, taking in this frightening information.

    KIRK(continuing)

Epsilon Nine picked up a disturbance caused by the cloud in Klingon space. Their probes caught the Klingons firing upon the intruder and their cruisers were destroyed by gigantic energy weapons of a type never encountered.

Scott throws Kirk an appalled look. A question hangs in the air, Kirk breaks the ice:

KIRKThe Klingons had definitely attacked it first. The Enterprise wont make that mistake, of course...

    SCOTT(correcting him)

There is no guaranteeing what the Enterprise will do. No ones even sure what shes capable of doing.

Scott nervously eyes Kirk, and finally decides to make one more effort:

  • SCOTTThe engines, the deflectors, weapons and defense systems -- its all new. Not even a shakedown cruise, much less any battle tests! And the engines, Admiral, theyre yet to be even tested at warp power. Add to that an inexperienced captain...

    KIRK(hint of smile)

Two and a half years in StarfleetOperations may have made me a little stale, Mr. Scott -- but I wouldn't exactly consider myself 'unexperienced.'

It takes Scott a moment to comprehend, and Kirk smiles now, nods:

    KIRK(continuing)

They gave her back to me, Scotty.

Scott peers at him, genuinely surprised -- and pleased. Then:

SCOTTGave' her back, sir...? I doubt it was that easy...

(returns smile)Any man who could manage such a feat, I wouldna dare disappoint. She'll launch on time, sir.

(with confidence)Ill get her ready somehow.

INT. POD - VERY CLOSE ON KIRK AT WINDOW51 51

as he watches, his face reflecting all of it: the awe, the wonder, the romance, the obsession. The one comp-lete love of his life. And with that love regained, he is becoming more fully alive again.

    KIRK(dreamily)

...shes as Aphrodite must have been when Zeus first raised her up from the sea...

    SCOTT(puzzled)

    Raised up who, sir?

Kirk looks at Scott; for a moment both hold each other's eye. It takes a moment for Scott to realize, then he knows precisely how Kirk feels. Both turn to the window again.

  • WHAT THEY SEE - THE ENTERPRISE (S)52 52

Now DOMINATING the SCREEN -- the awesome, symmetrical bulk of the starship comes fully INTO VIEW. And it dominates Kirk's -- and our emotions.

EXT. THE ENTERPRISE - AND THE POD (TINY IN THIS SHOT) 53-56 53-56AS IT CIRCLES - THE ANTI-LIKE FIGURES OF WORKERS (S)

The great ship dwarfs everything. The drydock becomes a fragile filigree framing the ship's great curved bulk. The tiny pod continues to move along it.

Small automated welding devices move along the gird- ers, working with brief, bright orange-white flares. In other areas of metal lace structure, supplies and equipment are being loaded onto the ship. The pod continues moving (Scott is giving Kirk time to see all), watched carefully by the TINY FIGURES OF SUPERVISING TECHNICIANS on the drydock. Now the pod moves toward mating position. It closes in, secures itself to the outer airlock.

    INT. POD - AT THE AIRLOCK57 57

Scott completing the mating procedure, Kirk turning from the observation window. Outside, the metallic CLICK of the pod locking onto the airlock. Now the "WHOOSH" of the latch doors securing, the CLANG of security bolts. It's all been a rare and delicious moment for Kirk, and his face shows it.

    SCOTT(happily)

    Welcome aboard, Captain.

OVER the POD INTERCOM we HEAR, "Pod secured. Pressureequalized." Scott moves the control to open the hatch.

  • INT. ENTERPRISE CARGO DECK (M)58 58

A confusion of organized work and VOICES. The cargo deck bustles with activity; supplies and equipment being stored and installed.

INT. CARGO DECK - BALCONY AND CATWALK59 59

Kirk and Scott are met by a nervous, perspiring ENSIGN.

    KIRKPermission to come aboard, sir...?

ENSIGNGranted, sir. Welcome aboard, Admiral... and Commander Scott, you're needed in Engineering immediately.

    SCOTT(to Kirk)

    Sir, if you'll excuse me...?

Kirk gestures him to leave, and Scott hurries away. Kirk stands a moment, gazing down at the cargo deck.

ANGLE DOWN PAST KIRK TO FLOOR (M)60 60

The crew maneuvering antigravity devices which move heavy containers -- scrambles of activity at storage holds and maintenance lockers.

CLOSE ON KIRK AND ENSIGN61 61

Kirk is drinking it all in. He's home.

    ENSIGN(nervous)

Sir, if theres somewhere youd like to be escorted...

KIRKI think I can find my own way, Ensign.

And Kirk moves off, leaving the Ensign gazing at him, relieved.

    EXT. ELEVATOR AND CATWALK62 62

Kirk ENTERS ANGLE and the doors snap open.

    14.

  • INT. ELEVATOR63 63

as Kirk enters. The doors close. Kirk waits a beat, savoring this moment too. Then, firmly to the control panel:

    KIRKBridge!

The turbo-elevator HUMS WITH POWER as it begins hur-tling up. On the wall back of Kirk we SEE an electronic diagram of the Enterprise tracking the elevator's speedy trip to the Bridge.

    INT. BRIDGE64 64

A confusion of activity and VOICES. Pieces of equip-ment in a state of disarray: consoles open, fiber optic tubes unconnected, viewing screens dismantled. It's a frantic, desperate scene -- a ship and crew to-tally unprepared. In the midst of all this: ALIEN ENSIGN is assisting UHURA (Lt. Comdr. stripes) deftly working her communications station, AD LIBBING "... Hailing frequency four, check. Hailing frequencyfive, will someone please check me?" At the helm, sweat-soaked SULU (Lt. Comdr stripes) has a service plate open, is peering inside to make delicate adjust- ments, AD LIBBING "... Helm, now give me a reading onfour point zero zero six of full." And at the Weapons Control, CHEKOV (Full Lt.) argues with TECHNICIANS who insist photon torpedoes read "ready" while Chekovargues the computer is not relaying that information.

ANGLE ON THE ELEVATOR DOORS65 65

snapping open -- and there is Kirk. For the moment no one notices him, and he stands watching, remembering. And then he moves forward toward the command center.

    ACROSS UHURA TO KIRK66 66

as she is the first to see him. She reacts, bewildered.

    UHURASir...?

    Chekov notices Kirk as well.

  • All work stops, with various AD LIBBED greetings from the old crew: "Admiral Kirk..." "It's the Captain...!" etc., etc. But most sit or stand, simple gaping at Kirk, all quite awed. The old hands, Uhura, Sulu, and Chekov start converging on Kirk. But he gestures them back, speaking crisply.

KIRKI appreciate the welcome; I wish the circumstances were less critical.

(to Uhura)Outpost station Epsilon Nine is monitoring the intruder. Keep a channel open to them.

    UHURAAye, sir.

    KIRK(glances around)

    Where is Captain Decker?

    SULUHe's in Engineering, sir...

    (uncomfortable,indicates Captain's chair)

    He doesn't know.

Kirk reacts with some exasperation, starts away, addresses Chekov:

KIRKPlease assemble the full crew on the Rec Deck at 0400 hours. See that the large viewer there is hooked up and working. I want to show everyone what were facing.

And Kirk moves to the elevator, enters, is gone. The moment the elevator doors snap closed:

SULUHe wanted her back. I wouldnt have wanted to be in his way when he went after her!

    ALIEN ENSIGN(perturbed)

And Captain Decker? This ship was given to him -- he's been with herevery minute of her refitting...

  • INT. ENGINEERING SECTION - CLOSE ON SCOTT68 68

Looking anxious in the middle of pandemonium as he stands at a console next to the main engine core. The low rumble of incredible energy dominates the room. He looks down at the console to check settings when a voice calls:

VOICE (O.S.)Ready, Engineer. Lets compare mag-patterns.

    CONTROL PANEL69 69

The voice immediately seems to come from a man whose head is stuffed into a panel inside the console.

WILLARD DECKER brings his head out of the panel. Decker is wearing Captains stripes, hes in his early 30s, and handsome. Decker picks himself up. Scott hands him a readout, he nods.

    INT. ENGINEERING SECTION70 70

The entire complex a beehive of pre-departure activity. ENGINEERING PERSONNEL (at least a third of them female) coming and going, the platform-elevators (small, one- man lifts to various levels) busy. A gentle but con- stant HUM and WHIRR flows from the engine core, to indi-cate a pre-idling mode. There will be continual AD LIBBED conversation among the Technicians.

Now the Engine Room door opens and Kirk steps into the area. He stands a moment observing the activity. A grizzled ENGINEERING CHIEF pushes a huge condenser on an anti-grav device past Kirk with a respectful "watch it, sir" admonishment. Kirk moves on to:

    THE INTERMIX CHAMBER71 71

at the middle of the power shaft. Very NOISY here, and a continual CACOPHONY of COMPUTERIZED AND HUMAN VOICES calling off equipment checks. (See Appropriate Appendix.) And grouped around a section of burnt-out circuitry are Decker, Scott, and two Technicians, as before. Decker and Scott are working feverishly uncoupling the device, probing its innards. Decker has discovered the problem, removed several transistor-type parts, taps them with a pencil-sized sonic analyzer.

    ACROSS THEM TO KIRK72 72

Scott glances up to see Kirk.

    17-18.

  • He looks from Decker to Kirk in acute embarrassment (so that we should realize Scott hasn't mentioned Kirk's taking over to Decker). Decker now notices Kirk, reacts pleased.

    DECKERAdmiral Kirk...

(shakes Kirk's hand)We're getting a top brass send off.

(self assured grin)She'll launch on schedule if we have to tow her out with our bare hands. Right, Scotty?

    SCOTTY(lamely)

    Aye, sir, that we will...

    KIRK(to Decker)

Will, let's step over here and talk.

He indicates corner. Decker glances bemusedly at Kirk, then turns to Scott:

DECKERLet me know when the back-ups are in place.

ACROSS SCOTT TO KIRK AND DECKER73 73

as Scott AD LIBS a glum "Aye, sir," and watches them walk across the Chamber.

    A CORNER OF THE INTERMIX CHAMBER74 74

just a little quieter here, with Kirk and Decker arriv-ing, and Decker saying blithely:

DECKERAll due respect, sir, I hope this isn't a Starfleet pep talk; I'm just too busy.

Kirk eyes Decker -- then decides the best way to say it is plainly, directly.

KIRKI'm taking the Center seat. I'm sorry, Will.

KIRKI'm replacing you as Captain of the Enterprise.

Decker seems shocked into silence; he can only peer at Kirk who reaches tentatively as though to clasp a paternal hand on Decker's shoulder, then withdraws it and continues quickly.

    KIRK(continuing)

You'll stay aboard as Executive Officer... a temporary grade reduction to Commander.

    DECKER(finding his voice)

-- You, personally, are assuming command?

    KIRKYes.

    DECKERMay I ask Why?

    KIRK(nods)

My experience -- five years out there dealing with unknowns like this -- my familiarity with the Enterprise, this crew...

DECKERAdmiral, this is an almost totally new enterprise. You don't know her a tenth as well as I do.

Kirk is silent a moment, peering levelly at Decker, who returns the gaze with equal intensity. Then:

KIRKReport to the bridge, Commander. Immediately.

Decker EXITS. Kirk waits, collecting his composure as he watches him go. Then Kirk turns to glare at Scott. Interrupted by a flare as something shorts out at the mechanism where Scott and Decker had been working. Technician (Cleary) reacts, hits an inter-com button fast:

TECHNICIAN (CLEARY)Transporter room, come in! Urgent!

(to Scott)Redline on the transporters, Mister Scott!

Scott whirls to a console fast, speaks urgently!

SCOTTTransporter room, do not engage! Do not....

  • INT. TRANSPORTER ROOM - INCLUDING TRANSPORTER CHAMBER 76 76(O)

An unusually defective looking TRANSPORTER EFFECT in progress, alternately flashing and glowing -- even the Transporter SOUND seems wrong, as if struggling to overcome some problem. At the console, CHIEF RAND and ASSISTANT are reacting in surprised, near-horror as they attempt vainly to save the situation.

    RAND(to Assistant)

Go to emergency power source!(into intercom)

Starfleet, override us! OVERRIDE...! Yank them back!

Suddenly, from Rand's console, a VIOLET GLARE -- a PROTESTING SOUND from the circuitry. And on the con-sole a red-warning light now begins flashing.

STARFLEET VOICEUnable to retrieve their pattern, Enterprise....!

Rand reacts in real horror now as human forms begin to FAINTLY MATERIALIZE, then FADE AWAY, then REAPPEAR IN FAINTLY MISSHAPEN FORM as she frantically works con-trols. Kirk ENTERS fast, steps to the console to assist Rand; Scott has also come in and moves to the console, brushes aside the Asst. Chief, and begins manipulating the additional controls himself.

    KIRKDamn...!

    SCOTTWe're losing the pattern...!

They MATERIALIZE; we HEAR A MOAN form from the Vulcan -- Loris SCREAM OF PAIN. Then, all at once, the half-materialized bodies are gone; the transporter chamber is empty.

    STARFLEET VOICE(shaken)

Enterprise... what we got back didn't live long. Fortunately.

Another moment of stunned silence, and then Kirk hits the transmission button -- fighting to control his voice as:

KIRKStarfleet... Kirk. Please... express my condolences to Admiral Cianas mother and father; say Ill visit them when... when circumstances permit. Commander Sonaks family can be reached through the Vulcan Embassy.

    (sees Rand's stricken expression)

There was nothing you could have done, Rand. It wasn't your fault.

And before Rand can answer, Kirk leaves the room.

    INT. CORRIDOR - TRAVELING WITH KIRK79 79

as Kirk steps out, and the doors snap closed behind him. In the corridor the furor of the hurried depar-ture is, as everywhere, quite evident: CREW MEMBERS move back and forth. But Kirk does not see them; his mind is tormented by the transporter accident -- was there something he should have done, could have done, to prevent it? Should he launch on schedule with the starship this unready? Has he done right in yielding to this terrible needs for starship command again, forcing Starfleet to give her to him? Would Decker's knowledge of the new design have prevented the acci-dent? Why Lori would have requested reassignment aboard the Enterprise?

Kirk reaches a corridor intersection, looks around, realizes he's lost track of where he is. A passing YEOMAN stops in response to his puzzled expression.

KIRKWe'll have to replace Commander Sonak. But I'd still like a Vulcan there, if possible...

DECKERNone available, Captain. There's no one, in fact, who's fully rated on this design.

KIRKYou are, Mister Decker. I'm afraid you'll have to double as Science Officer.

But this time, O.S., we HEAR GASPS of incredulity from many throats (an audience), and various AD LIBBED com-ments: "My God...!" "I don't believe it...!" "Whatcould it be...?" Etc., etc.

as in earlier Epsilon 9 message -- but with no music, only more AD LIBBED exclamations from an audience. The viewer goes blank.

    INT. RECREATION DECK (M)87 87

We SEE that all this was being viewed by the CREW MEMBERS (Aliens included) assembled on the Rec Deck.

The Recreation Deck is one of the largest areas on the ship, several deck levels high, a part of one wall consisting of picture windows, through which can be seen sections of the drydock structure outside.

On another wall is a large viewer, on which was just shown the Klingon transmission. Leading off and away from this deck area are what are obviously other specific recreation areas -- gymnasiums, food centers, game rooms, lounges, etc.

ANOTHER ANGLE OF THE RED DECK - HIGHER LEVEL88 88

as the Crew Members chat in low, grim tones -- Kirk (now with Captain's stripes) appears. As he comes into view, the two hundred or so crew below go silent. Kirk grimly indicates the now blank viewer:

KIRK (O.S.)Our orders are to intercept, investigate, and take whatever action is necessary and possible. We assume there is a vessel at the heart of the cloud. It is our hope that there are life forms aboard that vessel which reason as we do.

    BRIDGE VOICE(from intercom)

Captain, we have an urgent subspace call from Epsilon Nine.

Kirk leans over to the intercom, speaks into it:

KIRKPut it on the viewer here...!

ON THE REC DECK VIEWER (O)91 91

as all eyes turn to the viewer which fades into a view of Commander Branch, in the Epsilon 9 monitor room. Branch is tense, reflecting extreme urgency. Near Branch, working intently at the console are the Female Lieutenant and a Technician.

    We are under attack...!

    KIRK(to Uhura)

    External view...!

ON THE VIEWER - EXT. THE DESTRUCTION OF EPSILON 9 (O)92 92

And then, all at once, there is nothing -- empty space, Epsilon 9 is gone. We SEE only the stars; and the mysterious LUMINESCENT CLOUD moving across the distant sky.

(NOTE: The above is entirely SILENT, and when it is finished, not a word is spoken.)

    KIRK (O.S.)Viewer off.

    ANOTHER ANGLE - KIRK93 93

as the viewer goes blank, all still facing the screen. Then Kirk turns to the room as if to comment. Then he stops -- nothing he can say will add at all to what they've just seen. Instead:

KIRKPre-launch countdown will commence in forty minutes. Dismissed.

    ANOTHER ANGLE - CREW94 94

The scene they have just witnessed still vivid in their minds as they gaze somberly up toward Kirk who is exit-ing. The bridge crew follows him out. Not a word is said as the remainder of the crew waits another moment, then begins to disperse toward their duty stations too.

(hesitates)Not as difficult as seeing you has been. Im sorry...

ILIAThat you left, or that you didn't say 'goodbye'?

DECKERIf I'd seen you again, would youhave been able to say it?

    ILIA(long hesitation; then shakes head)

    No.

Ilia whirls, moves toward her stateroom door, which snaps open, then closes behind her. Decker stands gazing at the door, remembering, regretful.

    EXT. SPACE - THE SHUTTLE (S)146 146

traveling at a rapid speed; it carries warp-capacity nacelles which dwarf the smaller 8 to 10 position shuttle fuselage. The CAMERA HOLDS ON THE SHUTTLE as it overtakes the Enterprise, the ENTERPRISE COM-ING INTO VIEW, and the shuttle slowing and beginning to move between the starship's giant nacelles.

About the size of a fighter airplane floating in over the vastness of an aircraft carrier. The shuttle slows further, hovering now. Then its fuselage pod detaches from the warp drive nacelles -- the pod moving slowly but precisely toward the starship'scommand airlock.

  • INT. BRIDGE149A 149A

All at duty stations, eagerly awaiting the new arrival. Kirk stands by the science station waiting for Decker. A voice comes from Chekovs relief officer:

    OFFICERCabin now returning to shuttle.

Decker enters the bridge and crosses to the science station. Kirk turns to him with a look on his face similar to that of Nogura had earlier.

KIRKI want you to hear this Mister Decker...

Kirk presses a button on the console.

    KIRK(continuing)

Captains log, supplemental. Note commendation for Mr. Decker in that he took appropriate and proper action in countermanding my phaser order during the wormhole emergency. His knowledge and prompt action saved the ship. Kirk, out.

    DECKERThank you, Captain.

A moment of warmth between the two; Kirk starts to grow fonder for Decker. And, then:

  • INT. BRIDGE - TURBOLIFT DOORS150 150

The elevator doors open, and there is Spock. It takes everyone a moment to believe their eyes. Then, the Bridge crew AD LIB their surprise and pleasure.

    KIRKSpock...! Spock, where... how...?

Kirk, smiling, is moving toward Spock with hand out-stretched. But Spock has already turned and moved toward the science console where Decker sits.

    SPOCKCommander, if I may...?

    AT SCIENCE CONSOLE150A 150A

It takes Decker a moment to realize that Spock wants to take over the console. He begins getting to his feet, throwing Kirk a look. But Kirk's attention is totally on SPOCK. And Spock is already intent on com-putations he is beginning to punch into the science console computer.

SPOCKI have been monitoring your Starfleet transmissions, Captain, and I am aware of your engine difficulties.

Spock continues to punch information into the science computer -- a monitor screen IMAGE begins to show com-plex equations which Spock inspects -- he makes a further computer punchout and inspects a second monitor IMAGE of other equations. Only then does Spock seem to become aware of Kirk and Decker standing there with questioning expressions.

    SPOCK(continuing)

I offer my services as Science Officer.

  • Kirk starts to grin -- then remembers to wipe it off his face as he turns to Decker.

KIRKIf our Executive Officer has no objections...?

    DECKER(interrupting)

Of course not. I am well aware of Mister Spock's qualifications.

    KIRK(grinning openly now; turns, calls)

Mister Chekov, record Mr. SpocksStarfleet commission reactivated, and list him assigned as Enterprise science officer, both effective immediately.

ANGLE TO INCLUDE ELEVATOR DOORS151 151

Spock abruptly rises from the science station.

SPOCKThe required fuel formula will need considerable cooperation from the chief engineer. I can go there immediately, unless the captain wishes to question my tentative findings thus far...

    KIRK(quickly)

Just fix it, Spock. Do it in any way that gets us to warp speed fastest!

Spock gives no sign of acknowledgement. He crosses over to the turbo lift doors as they SNAP open -- McCoy and Chapel appear. Chapel sees Spock at the science console -- she moves in quickly, overjoyed. Even McCoy seems pleased.

    CHAPELMr. Spock...!!!

MCCOYSo help me, Spock, I'm almost pleased to see you.

But as Chapel crosses to Spock, her pleased smile brightening her whole face, Spock turns, dismisses her presence with a cold disinterested glance -- Chapel stops, stands dumbfounded. Spock gives McCoy a similar glance -- turns back to the turbolift as:

UHURAThat's how we all feel, Mister...

  • Kirk is a bit dumbfounded himself at Spock'sstrange manner. Spock heads for the elevator -- puz-zled expressions from the entire bridge crew. Then Kirk calls after him, very sincerely:

    KIRKMister Spock, welcome aboard!

Spock continues onto the elevator without any acknow-ledgment, leaves. Kirk glances, perplexed, at McCoy. McCoy, equally perplexed, shrugs.

MCCOYNever look a gift Vulcan in the ears, Jim.

    INT. ENGINEERING - SPOCK AND SCOTT151A 151A

Scott making an intermix chamber reading with a hand- held timer-temperature device which emits SIGNALS while Spock now in regulation uniform and hair trim, makes adjustments in the circuitry of a panel complex. Dur-ing the following, they will react as if they've solved the engine problem.

SPOCKIt should be possible to proceed without me now.
