CELEBRATING EXCELLENT CARE FROM AMAZING PEOPLE

Each day our 9,000 staff – whether working in our hospitals or local communities, clinical or support services – do amazing things to support our patients and services.

So it’s only fitting we recognise, reward and celebrate the people who have really demonstrated excellence in what they do through the trust’s Star Awards.

This year we’ve also introduced two new awards the Extra Life award, which recognises the work going on across the organisation to promote health and wellbeing, and the transformation award which showcases how we are driving out waste and improving services and efficiency despite today’s challenges in the NHS.

Of course we continue to pay homage to the huge impact our volunteers and fundraisers have on the quality of care we provide and we’re also presenting some special thank you awards to staff who went over and above what anyone could have expected of them in their roles.

We’re very proud to present all our winners and shortlisted nominees from ten categories and would also like to thank our generous sponsors for supporting this gala evening at The Middlesbrough Hotel whose hosts were trust chairman Deborah Jenkins and chief executive Professor Tricia Hart.

SUSAN BENSON

Susan went out of her way to help a very distressed patient who was stuck in the cold, alone, in Middlesbrough town centre as her new electric wheelchair had lost a wheel and she was worried how to get home to Saltburn. Despite the disablement services centre being short staffed and busy, Susan tracked down a taxi firm willing to help and kept in telephone contact with the patient to reassure her help was on its way.

Thank you Susan Benson

STEPHEN BELL

As a health and safety advisor, Stephen was approached by the Trinity Holistic Centre for advice on a project to develop the centre’s garden into a therapeutic space for patients. But he didn’t stop there…

Stephen then used his own time and contacts to round up support from across the trust and Carillion, fundraised and worked closely with a team from Camelot who devoted their time and materials. In just nine weeks the garden had a vegetable patch and an array of raised beds and it’s proved to be a hit with the hundreds of patients, carers and staff who use it.

Thank you Stephen Bell

PAEDIATRIC TEAM

Thank you Paediatric teamThe care, support and friendship provided by the paediatric team to patient Hannah Dowson and her family forged a very special bond over the years. Due to a severe debilitating illness, Hannah was blind, paralysed and reliant on a life-support machine and sadly died in 2014 aged 16.

During her time in our care, the team did not just focus on her physical needs but also tried to make her time with us as memorable and full as possible arranging some ‘me time’ for Hannah and her family in the hydrotherapy pool as a birthday treat as well as taking her to an ice skating rink. The team are worthy recipients of this award.

This year she presents the chairman’s award to the IMProVE (Integrated Management and Proactive Care for the Vulnerable and Elderly) project team.

The team, made up of clinical and support services, came together to manage a major change programme in partnership with South Tees Clinical Commissioning Group and local authorities.

In the last year, this programme has resulted in the development of a range of new services and initiatives, including bringing stroke rehabilitation services together, as well as the closure of the Carter Bequest Hospital.

It has impacted on hundreds of staff – many of who have had to change where and how they work – but thanks to the project team this process has been managed efficiently and effectively.

Chairman’sAwardEach year Deborah Jenkins gives a special award to an individual or service, who she believes has excelled and best demonstrates the values of the trust.

The IMProVE project team

The commitment and dedication of this team is a testament to the power of working together to achieve a goal of improving health services for some of our most vulnerable patients and providing care closer to home.

LifetimeAchievementAward–ProfessorTriciaHart

With Tricia retiring as chief executive in January 2016, it is only fitting we take this opportunity to honour her for the contribution she has made – not only to our trust over the last 11 years but to wider NHS for more than 40 years.

Since 1975 her career has been rich and varied across every genre of the health service, both at local and national level, including advising Sir Robert Francis on two reviews following the failings at Mid-Staffordshire. Her awards and accolades have been vast but for Tricia the patient has – and always will – come first. We wish her a well-deserved early retirement and present this award as a small token of our appreciation.
