2014 ANNUAL REPORT ! 5
“I am writing this note on behalf of my son Lorenzo who just returned from his week aboard the
Oliver Hazard Perry Camp. Looking at Lorenzo's life now, it’s hard to imagine that 6 years ago,
his summers were spent in soup kitchen lines in Providence. In 6 years he has experienced a
lifetime of experiences and now to add this sailing trip is unbelievable. My family is so grateful
for your generosity.” – AARON SHERMAN, FATHER OF LORENZO OLSEN-SMITH, 8TH GRADE STAR KID
One of the first duties I performed this summer as the new Executive Director of theStar Kids Scholarship Program was to place our students in summer camps – justone of the many wonderful assets of our Program. Star Kids Board member, LisaLewis, very generously awarded five scholarships for our students to sail aboard theschooner Mystic with the Oliver Hazard Perry middle school summer camp. With theguidance of previous Executive Director, Kathleen Burke, I selected five middleschool Star Kids to participate in this camp.
The response from the students (and parents of) who spent a week at sea with Oliver Hazard Perry was overwhelming. It was not until I received the above thank younote from Aaron that it dawned on me that I was not just selecting kids to go on a sailing trip over the summer – but I was actually helping to give them opportunity. An opportunity beyond acquiring sailing skills…to build friendships, to learn to work as a team, and to learn about themselves. For most kids, this camp was truly aonce-in-a-lifetime opportunity, but perhaps even more meaningful for our Star Kids, some of whom have endured a lifetime of hardships.
Upon relocating to Rhode Island last year, my goal was not just to find “a job,” but rather find “the opportunity.” When I discovered Star Kids, I knew immediately that it was meant to be. Now, with each day that I have been a partof this incredible organization, I gain an even deeper appreciation for the positive impact that we are having on the livesof our students and their families, as well as our community.
Summer camps are just one of the many ways that Star Kids provides opportunities to our children. Together with the non-public school tuition, the after-school programs, the tutoring, the books, and the uniforms – we are providing a wealthof opportunities. Six years ago, Aaron adopted Lorenzo, and gave him an opportunity to overcome the odds. Having foundStar Kids, Aaron has now been able to enhance Lorenzo’s life with more than he thought imaginable.
According to the Pew Charitable Trusts, more than 2.7 million children in the United States have an incarcerated parent, and approximately 10 million children have experienced parental incarceration at some point in their lives.* One might argue that these are the most disadvantaged children in our society. Approximately 93% of our Star Kidshave had a parent incarcerated, and 98% have had a parent with substance abuse problems.
We might not be able to help all 10 million children, but we can at least give our 96 Star Kids the best opportunities we can to rise above their circumstances, and overcome the poverty, drug abuse, and neglect that they once knew. Giving kids the opportunity of an education is the greatest gift you can give, and I am so grateful to be the conduit.
Thank you for giving our children this opportunity.

4 ! STAR KIDS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM – NEWPORT/FALL RIVER
Dear Friend of Children:
In the non-profit world, annual report lettersare filled with wonderful, positive statistics on success rates, percentage achievementgraphs, comparative fulfillment goals and somany dazzling numbers and data it oftenoverwhelms the fundamental mission.
At Star Kids, we have our share of these critical and meaningful statistics — real success stories…but the central message of our program is rooted in the daily challenge.Day after day, our kids get ready for a worldthat is both daunting and embracing —forbidding and uplifting. A world that takesthem from anonymity to love…
Our mission is a simple one: Take a child whohas been given a terribly difficult road to walk, and support that child with a meaningful education, after-school tutoring, caring and supportive mentoring and summer programs that are both fun and supportive. Our mission isclear, our goals are consistent: Raise one fallen sparrow…
For the past fourteen years of Stars Kids development, our Annual Message has been written by our President andFounder, Dr. Timothy P. Flanigan. This year, Dr. Flanigan is involved in Liberia, Africa in his role as an Infectious DiseaseSpecialist, fighting to train health workers and tend to the needs of patients with the Ebola virus. Dr. Flanigan’s commitment to those in need encompasses a wide community: be it here in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, or inthe clinics in Monrovia, Liberia.
The real strength of Star Kids is rooted in the people we are: kids and their families, sponsors and donors, board members, partner schools, and a really committed group of staff members. We are large enough to be effective advocates for our children and small enough to call us all “family.” This year, we underwent a bittersweet series ofevents: Our Executive Directors in both Newport/Fall River and New Bedford sadly left our family and we bid a loving adieu to Kathleen Burke and Judy Zwirblis. We could not wish them fonder thoughts for a successful next phaseof their lives. We are happy and proud to announce our new Executive Directors — Kristen Van Hull leading theNewport/Fall River Chapter, and Ellen Lough leading the New Bedford Chapter.
Our new Executive Directors have the experience and skills to grow our organizations and support, encourage, andnurture our Star Kids and their families. Adapting to change is often a difficult challenge, and we are fortunate to havestrong, able leadership at the helm of our Starship!
We thank you for your commitment to Star Kids and your shared vision of a better world for children who face a roadfilled with bumps and stones. Thank you for making that journey a smoother and kinder one.
Sincerely,
Ken Moldow Vice President of the Board, Star Kids Newport /Fall River

2014 ANNUAL REPORT ! 98 ! STAR KIDS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM – NEWPORT/FALL RIVER
After-School Programs/TutoringAfter-school opportunities and tutoring are available to round outeach Star Kid’s experience. We work closely with our partneringschools to ensure that academic needs are met for each child. In the 2013-14 academic year, 10 Star Kids received additionaltutoring support where academic gaps existed. For a handful ofchildren, tutoring continued during the summer months to ensure asmooth transition to the next grade level.
Star Kids are involved in a myriad of afternoon activities whichinclude piano, guitar and voice lessons, drama performances, schooland town sports teams (soccer, football, cross country, basketball, swimming, gymnastics, baseball, lacrosse, sailing), horseback riding, kickboxing, karate, dance, and sewing. Statistics consistently showthat children involved in team and community outlets are more likely to stay out of trouble and are better equipped to workcooperatively as adults. Mentors, donors, and supporters enjoycheering on the Star Kids actors, musicians, and athletes at theirmany year-round events!
Summer ProgramsIn June through August 2014, 44 Star Kids attended 31 differentcamps and programs. Thanks to Board member Lisa Lewis’ generosity, 5 Star Kids spent a week at sea aboard the schoonerMystic, through the Oliver Hazard Perry middle school sailing campprogram, building friendships and memories to last a lifetime. Other new (and exciting!) camps this year included Newport Cooks!and scuba diving certification with Endless Summer Camp.Additionally, the Newport Garden Club generously supported twoStar Kids again at Norman Bird Sanctuary, and SailNewport donatedone scholarship. Last, two middle school girls in the Program werechosen to spend a week at St. Philomena School’s sleep-away TeenLeadership Camp. Other sleep-away programs included PortsmouthAbbey School, Camp Dudley, Camp Becket, and St. George’sSchool’s Camp Ramleh.
Mentor Program The goal of the Star Kids Scholarship MentorProgram is to provide mentoring to interestedstudents beginning at age five, or at any pointthereafter. Mentors are role models who contribute to a child’s academic successthrough the gift of time and attention. They alsoadd a little fun to a child’s life.
Mentor relationships begin as school-based, as mentors help the student with school work and spend time getting to knoweach other. Each Star Kids mentor/student relationship is unique and develops in its own way. Relationships may evolve to include out-of-school activities and outings that broaden a child’s horizons. Our annual children’s events provide an opportunity for mentorsand mentees to get to know each other outside of the school setting. This year, Star Kids is partnering with Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Ocean State to participate in their on-site after-school mentor programs.
Children’s Events
Ballard Park Fall Fun DayBallard Park in Newport was the perfect setting for our outdoor Fall Fun Day. On October 27th, 2013, Star Kids and their familiesexplored the natural and wild open space. Friends of Ballard Parkstaff led our energetic group on a hike, pointing out native plantspecies, puddingstone boulders, and 19th century quarry walls. Our Star Kids were engaged and enthusiastic throughout our walk.Post-hike, we enjoyed refreshments in the picturesque quarrymeadow, and then participated in a scavenger hunt and a challenging human knot game. It was wonderful to see our StarKids work together in a team effort.
13th Annual Skating with Santa at St. George’s Ice RinkOn December 8th, 2013, over 70 Star Kids and family membersenjoyed an afternoon at St. George’s High School ice rink. The St.George’s Boys and Girls Hockey teams enthusiastically led the wayon the ice and treated our Star Kids to skating fun. A special treatwas having Santa skate with the kids. Family members as well assponsors, mentors, and Board members cheered our students onfrom the stands. The Tiverton Senior Center knitted colorful hatsand mittens for everyone. It was a joyful event!
A Reason to SurviveOn February 7th, 2014 nine Star Kids interested in the arts attendeda special workshop directed by Portsmouth Abbey alum, MattD’Arrigo of “A Reason to Survive,” a California non-profit arts program for at-risk youth. Portsmouth Abbey School TheaterClose to 60 Star Kids and family members enjoyed front row seatsto the Portsmouth Abbey Players production of How to Succeed inBusiness Without Really Trying on February 22nd and 23rd, 2014.The children and parents delighted in the lively song and dancenumbers. Our own Star Kid, Rajahnah Matra, starred in the produc-tion as Smitty, a spunky and spirited secretary at the World WideWicket Company. I am FromWritten by Kaitlyn Botelho, and Recited at the“Lucky Star” Soirée
I am from the openness of two
kind hearts,
who re-kindled the hope in me.
(those kind hearts would
be my grandparents who raised me and Ethan)
I am from the long summer days,
with endless fun and play.
The smell of fresh linen hanging on the line,
waiting for a breeze.
I am from the feel of a stitched ball,
against my small palm.
With each throw and catch I became his perfect idea of a player,
cheering and rooting at each game.
I am from the tough times,
the testy times and the better times,
from the times hope was lost,
and the times hope was found.
I am from the time it was okay to be yourself,
when no one talked about yesterday,
the time where each day was thought of as new.
