The Early Years

• When Avril Lavigne first hit the music industry she entered as a young pop/punk skater girl, prone to rebellion with her tom boy style and head strong persona.

• Avril’s album debut was titled ‘Let Go’. Where she wrote such hits as ‘Complicated’ and ‘Sk8tr Boy’.

The fact that Avril was writing a lot of songs that could easily relate to teenage girls her age made her star image appear to be this wholesome young artist with a sense of innocence.

‘The Best Damn Thing’• Over the years Avril appeared to

be changing her star image along with her style of music.

• Her songs became more influenced by the ‘Pop’ genre such as the hit single ‘Girlfriend’.

• Her new choice of image including the blonde and pink hair, revealing clothing and heavy use of make-up changed her innocent and young appearance to become a new Avril. I would say that her new star image

meant that she appealed to a far larger audience concerning not only her music, but her appearance too.

‘Complicated’ was one of the first music video’s that Avril filmed; ‘Girlfriend’ being one of the latest that she has filmed. Its easy to distinguish the difference in star image between the two video’s due to her appearance.
