TRANSITION TEAM UPDATE
The transition team would like to extend a special thanks to everyone who has helped us in gathering information for the mission study. Thanks to you if you have: Participated in one of the two Table Talks
Served or prepared food for any event related to
the transition process
Completed one of the congregational surveys
Attended or hosted a Cottage Meeting
Participated in a committee interview
Reached out to a member of the team to give support, guidance or feedback
Prayed for the transition team
Prayed for our staff and transitional minister, Ray Mims
In the next two weeks, you will begin hearing more about the results of our recent congregational survey. Session members have been updated on the outcome of the committee interviews that have been held over the last two months. Cottage meetings will continue through mid-September, giving you additional opportunities for feedback.
Once the cottage meetings conclude in mid-September, we will have the feedback needed to complete the mission study process later this fall. This will allow the church to move into the next phase of the pastoral selection process.
Your prayers, support and encouragement are coveted as we finalize this chapter in our transition.
Peace,
The Transition Team Slade Lewis Anna Lewis Gale Owens Susan Porter Rhonda Overman Lauren Shook Kevin Kattmann

PASTORS ’ offering of faith-growing opportunities in
September. There will be a variety of
educational experiences for all ages.
Special worship opportunities are also
planned for September to help us grow in
faith during the fall. Our community service
projects will be very active in September.
Plan to be with us as we study, pray, worship,
and serve God together. It is my prayer that
you will experience one of those “thin
places” for yourself.
Ray Mims
I’ve talked about it a
lot since I’ve returned,
but it was – like for
many – a tremendous
experience. The
Montreat Youth
Conference was one
from which memories
were made: outstanding music, worship,
conversations, and fellowship. The seven
youth and two leaders that attended got
along great and forged new bonds deeper
than they already had being a part of this
church family. The week’s theme, “World of
Difference,” was one that challenged the
participants to think differently about how
each could impact the many spheres in
which they operate – at home, at school, at
church, and in the world. During one of the
small group meetings, in particular, participants
were encouraged to write a letter to their
church based upon the readings from
1Corinthians 13 and 14: what did they want
the church to hear? What did they want the
church to know?
I wrote a letter to this congregation and
shared it in worship recently. While I have
shared it before, the more I read it, the more
I realize that the words are inspired by the
Holy Spirit and resonate with me – I’m praying
Dear Friends,
“Thin Places,” according to
Celtic spirituality, are those
places where we
experience a closeness with
God, times when the
separation between God
and us is at its least. They
are places where we have experiences that
are life-changing and bring us into the
presence of God. Of course, God is
everywhere, all the time, but there are those
special times and places where we feel
God’s presence in our lives in a particularly
moving way. I believe that “thin places” are
a special blessing from God, that give us
encouragement and hope to face the
difficult times in our lives.
All of us need to have a regular time to
come into the presence of God through
worship, scripture, music, prayer and time
spent in meditation, perhaps in a special
place. Our youth attended the Montreat
Youth Conference this summer and many
experienced those “thin places” This is a very
special opportunity where our young people
can experience the very presence of God.
Thank you for supporting our youth as they
grow in faith together.
Our Faith Formation Committee has planned
an array of educational opportunities for
September. New Sunday School curriculum is
planned for children and adults. A hymnology
class, a parenting class, a Presbyterian History
and Belief class, a Sacraments class and mid-
week Bible study are planned. A new
Confirmation class is being planned for the
fall to help our 8th graders grow in their faith
and will hopefully lead to them becoming
full, communing members of our church. Our
youth will be involved in regular service
projects and weekly youth group meetings
guided by a new Youth Council. Wonderful
Wednesday’s fellowship meal will add to the

they do the same for you:
Dear Church,
You can be a noisy gong or clanging cymbal – I
encourage that…as long as you do it keeping
the face of God at the front of it. We are called
to stand up and speak out when we see injustice.
So, as Paul calls us to be the noisy gong or
clanging cymbal, just make sure you are doing it
with love. Do not be silent – but do so productively
and proactively – attempting to make change
FOR THE BETTERMENT OF YOUR CHURCH.
The first rule of ministry is: it’s not about you, but
it’s about you, but it’s not about you. Listen to
Paul in 1 Corinthians 14 – speak for others through
encouragement and consolation building up the
church – using the gifts GOD has given you – but
it’s not about you – but it’s about you in how you
use them… We are a part of the body of Christ –
each of us plays and serves an important part. If
we cannot respect what parts of the body each
of us is and what role we have to play, this body
of Christ will seek to function and die. That, I think,
we can confidently say, is the last thing any of us
want.
So, let’s go be a noisy, justice-seeking, respectful
body of Christ together in this world.
Affectionately,
Pastor Kathryn

Children and Family
Worship and
Sacraments Class Coming September 18!
Is your child asking questions about what
is happening in worship? Are you wanting
to put to words how and why we
participate in communion? Do you
wonder about why we have baptism in
the worship service after the sermon?
Children and at least one parent are
invited to participate together in a
worship and sacraments class!
Pastor Kathryn is leading a participatory
class on September 18, September 25,
and October 2 during the education hour.
During the class, participants will learn
about seasons of the church year (what
do the colors mean?), details about the
order of worship (why do we do it then?),
communion (why do we eat something
during worship?), and baptism (why is
there water?).
This class is open to all, but geared
toward families and children. Children do
not have to participate in the class prior
to taking communion, but it is encouraged.
Parents are encouraged to decide when
their children are ready to participate in
communion. If you are unsure if your child
is ready to participate in communion,
please ask Pastor Kathryn.
If you are interested in participating,
please contact Pastor Kathryn –
registration is requested to make sure
there are enough supplies. Each
participating family will be provided with
the book “A Children’s Guide to Worship”
to serve as a guide. If you are interested
in purchasing the book outside of the
class, please contact Pastor Kathryn.

COVENANT CREATING LIVING TRUSTING
Presbyterian tradition maintains that
engaging in study and conversation
together is the most effective way to deepen understanding of God’s Word
and discern God’s will for our lives.
With guidance from the Holy Spirit,
such study and conversation transforms
and empowers believers to engage as
leaders in the church and as followers
of Christ in the world.
COVENANT BIBLE STUDY is a structured,
scholarly, yet accessible approach to
small group study. Using the metaphor
of COVENANT as a unifying theme, the
study guides participants through the
entire Bible in three consecutive eight
weeks of in-depth small group Bible
study in which people will read and
discuss the Bible together; learning how
to love God – and others – better.
PURPOSE: to engage participants in
conversations about this unique and
special relationship – as well as our
relationships with each other and the
world around us – as we study the Bible
together.
GOAL: to deepen our understanding of
scripture while also helping us respond
together in answering God’s call to be
faithful to Jesus in our lives.
If interested in participating in the first
eight weeks – Creating – please fill out
the form below: The second and third
eight week study will be determined.

for having been the
driving force behind the
new Presbyterian Hymnal Glory to God.
Her picture and bio follow:
Mary Louise (Mel) Bringle is a Professor
of Philosophy and Religious Studies at
Brevard College in Brevard, NC. Her
Ph.D. in Theological Studies is from

hymn writer whose original texts and
translations appear in the hymnals of
numerous denominations in North
America and Scotland, she has recently

the Presbyterian Committee on
Congregational Song, responsible for
creating the new hymnal Glory to
God. She is a ruling elder at Trinity
Presbyterian Church in Hendersonville, NC.
Please plan on joining us for what
promises to be a fascinating and

Yoga Class
Frequently Asked Questions
What do I wear to yoga?
Wear something
comfortable that you can
move in. We generally go
barefoot in class, so be
prepared to remove your
shoes.
How much does it cost?
The classes are on a donation basis.
Nobody knows how much you put in the
basket! Comparable classes in
Greensboro cost between $5-20.
Do I have to sign up for a certain number
of classes?
No, at this point the classes are open
enrollment and you can drop in
whenever you like. You will feel more
comfortable if you come regularly so that
you can build on what you learn, but no
one is taking attendance!
What if I don’t have any yoga “gear”?
Props are available in class. You may
eventually want to buy your own mat, but
you don’t need one to start.
I’ve never done yoga before and I don’t
want to look like a klutz.
No problem. We don’t expect every
student to either be flexible or come to
class with a perfect downward facing
dog. Yoga is literally for every body. Yoga
meets your body where it is right now and
offers you the chance to get to know your
body better. Each person in the class is
focused on his or her own body – not on
how their neighboring student looks.
I’m afraid I might get hurt.
The very first concept in yoga is
ahimsa. Ahimsa means non-harming. It’s a
universal concept, but in yoga class
ahimsa starts with not harming yourself.
We take it seriously and ask that you pay
attention to how your body feels so that
you don’t put yourself in danger of
getting hurt. You will always have easier
options to use if your body isn’t ready for
challenging poses.
Which class should I attend?
If you have physical issues, if your
balance is chancy, if you are stiff and just
need to loosen up, come to the chair
class on Tuesdays at 11:30. At least half of
the class time we are seated in a chair
and the other half we are standing and
can hold onto the back of the chair. (And
we often go to lunch together afterward.)
If you are beginning or re-entering the
world of yoga and you can get up and
down from the floor, either of the other
two classes will work for you. In both
classes we are focusing on learning good
alignment to keep our bodies safe as we
move through classic yoga asanas or
poses. A typical class begins with warm
up movements either seated or standing.
Depending on the focus for the day, we
will include standing postures, balance
poses, seated twists, hip openers lying on
the floor, and many other options. No two
classes are alike, but all classes allow your
body to move in all directions to wake up
muscles and engage your body, mind
and spirit.

College Addresses Needed!
Are you a college student who is out
on your own? Are you the parent of a
college student who is out on their
own? As the school year begins, the
church database will “graduate” high
school graduates to being their own
households, regardless of whether or
not they are still living at home. To that
end, we would like to continue to be in
touch with them while they are away
from Greensboro, including newsletters,
notes of encouragement, and care
packages closer to the end of the fall
semester. In order to do this, the staff
needs the most updated address for
these newly established heads-of-
household.
We encourage you to log in to the
church database (through the Star
Connect portal on the church’s
website) or to be in touch with Pastor
Kathryn. Please let her know if you
have any questions. Thanks for helping
us keep up with you!

True You, Overcoming Self-Doubt and Using Your Voice by Adele Calhoun and Tracey Bianchi. "Every woman has a story, but not all of us know how to take what we have experienced and learned and known and tell that story. This wonderful book helps a
woman find her voice―one that is neither too loud nor too soft; one that is truly God-given and unique. Through stories, experiences and very practical applications, Tracey Bianchi and Adele Ahlberg Calhoun help women 'lean in' to all that God has for them. A great book to share with a friend or a study group and one that every woman will find uplifting and helpful." "True You does better than provide the 'right' answers: it asks the right questions. This book is a must-read for the thinking woman, one who wants to live out fully who God created her to be." "'Your life matters and isn’t just about you.' This sentence is a good summary of what Calhoun and Bianchi have to say in True You. These are words of dual truth that all women need to hear and believe―and they’re rarely spoken in our world. With empathy and sisterly candor, these two women call us to what we already want to be and give us the courage to pursue our true selves." Back cover reviews Call no.248.843 Cal 2014
Wolf Hall, A Novel by Hilary Mantel. “As Henry VIII's go-to man for his dirty work, Thomas Cromwell (1485-1540) isn't a likely candidate for a sympathetic portrait. He dirtied his hands too often. In the end, Henry dropped him just as he had Cromwell's
mentor, Cardinal Wolsey, who counseled the king before him. But as Mantel reminds us, Cromwell was a man of many parts, admirable in many respects though disturbing in others. Above all, he got things done and was deeply loyal to his masters, first Wolsey and then the king. Nor was Henry always bloated and egomaniacal: well into his forties, when in good spirits, the king shone brighter than all those around him. This is in all respects a superior work of fiction, peopled with appealing characters living through a period of tense high drama: Henry's abandonment of wife and church to marry Anne Boleyn. It should appeal to many readers, not just history buffs. And Mantel achieves this feat without violating the historical record! There will be few novels this year as good as this one.” Library Journal review Call no. F Man 2009
Complications, A Surgeon’s Notes on an Imperfect Science by Atul Gawande. A National Book Award finalist. “A brilliant and courageous doctor reveals, in
gripping accounts of true cases, the power and limits of modern medicine… Gawande offers an unflinching view from the scalpel's edge, where science is ambiguous, information is limited, the stakes are high, yet decisions must be made. In dramatic and revealing stories of patients and doctors, he explores how deadly mistakes occur and why good surgeons go bad. He also shows us what happens when medicine comes up against the inexplicable: an architect with incapacitating back pain for which there is no physical cause, a young woman with nausea that won't go away, a television newscaster whose blushing is so severe that she cannot do her job. Gawande offers a richly detailed portrait of the people and the science, even as he tackles the paradoxes and imperfections inherent in caring for human lives. At once tough-minded and humane, Complications is a new kind of medical writing, nuanced and lucid, unafraid to confront the conflicts and uncertainties that lie at the heart of modern medicine, yet always alive to the possibilities of wisdom in this extraordinary endeavor.” From Publisher Call no. B Gawande 2002
The Boys Who Challenged Hitler, Knud Pedersen and the Churchill Club by Phillip Hoose. “At the outset of World War II, Denmark did not resist German occupation. Deeply ashamed of his nation's leaders, fifteen-year-old Knud Pedersen resolved with
his brother and a handful of schoolmates to take action against the Nazis if the adults would not. Naming their secret club after the fiery British leader, the young patriots in the Churchill Club committed countless acts of sabotage, infuriating the Germans, who eventually had the boys tracked down and arrested. But their efforts were not in vain: the boys' exploits and eventual imprisonment helped spark a full-blown Danish resistance. Interweaving his own narrative with the recollections of Knud himself, this is an inspiring story of these young war heroes"
