Join Ballet Black for their latest story ballet, Second Coming, a gothic fairytale created by award-winning choreographer Mark Bruce (Dracula), which tells the tale of a ruler who reigns over a dark and beautiful kingdom of savages.

This programme also features To Fetch a Pail of Water? by emerging choreographer Kit Holder (Birmingham Royal Ballet) and Will Tuckett’s Depouillement.

Winners of the Critics’ Circle National Dance Award for Best Independent Company, Ballet Black’s talented and dynamic dancers are not to be missed.

“The Company have never looked better” The Independent

The inaugural winner of Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures Choreographer Award, James Cousins created work for Scottish Ballet and the Royal Ballet of Flanders before founding his own company. Like Bourne, Cousins creates entertaining, clever dance that audiences love.

Without Stars and There We Have Been are inspired by Haruki Murakami’s dark but beautifully tender novel, Norwegian Wood. Taking the themes of love, loss and friendship from the Japanese story, this is a moving and powerful double bill.

★★★★ “Choreography that feels freshly minted… Cousins is a talent to watch”The Guardian

Phoenix Dance Theatre present their annual showcase featuring two exciting mixed bills of work.

Phoenix @ Home includes audience favourite Melt, by Artistic Director Sharon Watson, featuring a blend of soaring aerial dance and contemporary choreography. The programme also includes the powerful and hard hitting Document, by European choreographic duo Ivgi and Greben, alongside Darshan Singh Bhuller’s inventive and amusing Mapping.

For one night only on Wednesday 30 September, Phoenix Presents... brings to Leeds the work of the 2014 New Adventures Choreographer Award winners Sally Marie and John Ross alongside Caroline Finn’s darkly comic and playful Bloom, which was commissioned in partnership with New Adventures Choreographer Award and created for the Company in 2014.

“Complex and rewarding, the quality of choreography is consistently fine and the dancers are superb” Dance Europe

This is a rare opportunity to see the prestigious Royal New Zealand Ballet perform in the UK with three European Premières.

Internationally renowned for their fresh and adventurous approach, Royal New Zealand Ballet make their first appearance in Leeds with A Passing Cloud - a typically dynamic collection of new works.

The programme will feature the European Première of Javier de Frutos’ piece inspired by the Pacific. The Anatomy of a Passing Cloud is a celebration of the region’s vibrant colours and music. Leading New Zealand choreographers Andrew Simmons and Neil Ieremia present Dear Horizon and Passchendaele inspired by their homeland’s contribution to the First World War. The programme is completed by Selon Désir by Andonis Foniadakis.
