Taxi crash leaves 12 injured>> Two passengers seriously injured

TWELVEpeoplewere injured in a taxi accidentyesterday morning (Tuesday).

It believed that thedriver lost control of thetaxi travelling on the R74 near the Stanger Manortraffic lights.

However, according to IPSSMedicalRescuepara-medics who were on scene, the exact cause ofthe accident is unknown at this stage.

“The vehicle rolled and came to a stand still atthe Stanger Manor robots on its roof. Two of the 12passengers where seriously injured. All 12 wheretransported to hospital by IPSSMedical Rescue andother services,” said a spokesperson.

THE KwaDukuza Municipality launcheda road safety campaign called Opera­tion Vimbingozi last week.

There was a parade intended toraise awareness about the number ofroad accidents that occur during thelong weekend period.

The traffic department, the Umhlalidog unit, the fire department as well asparamedics attended the event andeach staged an exhibition to help raiseawareness.

Mayor Ricardo Mthembu called onall the relevant stakeholders to ensurethat the number of accidents that oc­cur during the holidays is broughtdown.

“We are rolling out this campaign inlight of the holidays and long week­ends,” Mthembu said whilst addressinga hall of people.

He also mentioned the tragic pass­ing of National Public AdministrationMinister Collins Chabane, who lost hislife when the vehicle he was travellingin collided with a truck.

Shoprite all the way up to the town halland thereafter the fire departmentstaged a rescue operation along withIPSS paramedics. The Umhlali dog unitalso staged an exhibition.

According to the Department ofTransport the number of deaths on theroads during Easter dropped in 2014 to148, from 201 recorded in 2013.

Driving under the influence of alco­hol and driving at top speeds remainsone of the main reasons of road acci­dents.

Disappointed by attitude ofcommunity leaders inShakaskraalI AM writing this letter because I believethat the community of Shakaskraalneeds to be made aware of what is hap­pening in our town.

As a local GP, I have found that drugaddiction is a big problem in the commu­nity.

Many lives are being lost, many fami­lies are being destroyed although they arein a situation that I believe is salvageable.

I took the initiative to contact a worldacclaimed addiction specialist, who isexperienced when it comes to the treat­ment of addicts as well as educatingtheir families, in order to set up a drugawareness talk that would assist bothyoung people and parents who arecurrently faced with drug­related prob­lems.

I started in October 2014, trying to se­cure a venue, where he could talk to the

kraal Primary School.This seemed liked the ideal location as

it is just a stone’s throw from Nkabongo,and people can easily walk there to listento the talk and get the help and assist­ance they require.

The intention of hosting the drugawareness talk was not only to provideinformation, but also to form supportgroups for families affected by addictionand addicts themselves.

However, when I approachedShakaskraal Primary to make arrange­ments to hire their hall I encountered nu­merous challenges.

I experienced extreme disappoint­ment and frustration due to the attitudeof people who appear to have the mo­nopoly on what goes on in town.

I was first told that I must apply inwriting, which I did, but to date I have notreceived a reply.

Then I was told, by Mr Anthony Singh(previous chairperson of governing body)that the hall was booked and if I applyfor another date that the hall would bebooked on that date as well.

This is clearly abuse of his authority.During the phone call, he seemed to havemore political motives at heart, ratherthan community upliftment.

Community members will agree thatthis community needs all the help andsupport it can get to curb the drug­related

problems within this community.It is sad and disappointing that there

would be such opposition and very littleco­operation from people who shouldhave this community’s best interests aspriority.

After chatting to Singh I begin towonder if political agendas are actuallyholding back this entire community.

It is unfair, that in a community thatneeds so much upliftment, certain“kingpins” are acting in their owninterest to prevent good things from tak­ing place.

It is also not right that the school’sgoverning body is being turned into a po­litical battlefield by its chairperson. Itneeds to be acknowledged that drug ad­diction is rife in this town.

I cannot sit back and watch things goon the way they are.

If no one acts about the situation inour town, things may even get worse andthe state of Shakaskraal can deteriorateto such an extent that we may have tocontend with gangs, gang­related vio­lence and drug­associated crime.

Community leaders should actuallysupport initiatives like this drug aware­nesscampaign,whichwillultimatelylendsupport to drug addicts as well as theirfamilies.

Instead, I have found the currentcommunity leaders acting in such a wayso as to shut down any communityinitiative which will threaten theirpolitical agenda, and this is very disap­pointing.

The drug awareness campaign willcontinue, irrespective of the current re­sistance that is experience.

COMMUNITIES are urged to attendall public meetings scheduled byiLembe and KwaDukuzaMunicipali-ties.

More than 2490 petition weresigned and acknowledged by iLembeagainst the rise in tariffs.

Overall increase in the currentbudget2014/2015was10%plus costreflective tariff of 17%.

Therefore, the total increase was27%.

Added to that for the first timewasa 70% sewer tariff based on waterconsumption plus a R120 basiccharge. Your voice and input is vital

before a final determination is madein the new budget for 2015/2016.

There is anger in the communityregarding the affordability of thesemunicipal services. Guidelines clear-ly state a phased-in approach shouldbe considered or simply revert to theoldsystemwheresewerchargeswerebased on value of property.

With the high cost of living, cou-pled with inflation the increases arebeyond one’s ability to pay for theseservices. It is important for iLembe togo back to the drawing board and ex-plore all possible solutions to adheretothecriesofthecommunity.Servicesat all times must be affordable andsustainable.

Government must provide alternatives to soften shock of rising electricity tariffs

CONGRESS of the People (Cope) is con-cerned about the impact of the rising costof electricity on already strained house-

have to pay for the shambolic chaos at Eskom.Ourburdenisexacerbatedbythepolitical in-

terferenceof theANCintherunningof thepara-statals.Eachfailureof theZumaadministrationis a further direct cost to every South African.

Thegovernmentmusthelp toameliorate thesituation by vigorously pursuing the extensiveinstallation of solar geysers and not let up as itis doing. All homes should have variousschemesfor installingsolargeysers throughex-tended payment schemes. This is not an optionanylonger. It isarequirement foreconomicsur-vival.

CHILD Welfare SA: KwaZulu-Natal is calling on schools,business houses and the

community to support the TekkieTax campaign on Friday 29 May.

Tekkie Tax is an annualfundraising campaign for welfareorganisations.

During April and May membersof the community, schools andbusiness houses will be asked toget a Tekkie Tax sticker for a R10donation from Child Welfare SA:KwaDukuza.

There will be five different kindsof stickers, each representing abeneficiary sector.

People will be able to choosewhich of the five sectors they wouldlike to support (children, animals,education, disability, basic commu-nity welfare) by buying one of thosestickers from a sector of theirchoice.

The society thanks the commu-nity for supporting the Tekkie Taxcampaign in 2014.

An appeal is made once again tothe community to support thisfundraising venture by purchasinga sticker for R10 to show which ofthe five sectors your heart lies.

On 29 May, people will be wear-ing their tekkies in support of thisgood cause.

Pupils are requested to weartheir stickers to school on 29 Mayto show their support for TekkieTax.

Tekkie Tax stickers are nowavailable for sale at the society.

Schools participating in the Tek-kie Tax campaign must return allproceeds from sticker sales to thesociety by 15 May.

WARRIORS Sport clawedtheir way from a setdown to edge out Rand-

sons Volleyball Club (2-1) onThursday night and booked theirplace in the finalof theCaminamixServices-sponsored EasterKnockout Cup (hosted by Kwa-Dukuza Volleyball Association).

Randsons were overwhelmingfavourites to advance to the final,but left the courts licking theirwounds after a below-par per-formance.

Randsons took a narrow 10-7lead after a scrappy performanceupfront. The Shakaskraal-based

Warriors outfit took advantage ofthe catalogue of errors from theRandsons rearguard to level thescores at 11-11.

Lennox Dayi restored Rand-sons lead (13-12) with a classicsecond-ball dump that left theWarriors lads dumbstruck.Sandhir “Tinboy” Jugmohan setthe courts ablaze with a thunder-ous bazooka to extend Randsonslead (14-12).

Daniel John kept Warriors inthe hunt for honours with somebrilliant winners from power, togive his side a narrow 17-16 leadfor the first time in the match.Randsons manager, Aslam Ran-deree immediately summoned a

timeout and regained the serveafter a lethargic no-pass bySherwin Adyappa.

Jugmohan and Dayi combinedsuperbly to give Randsons a com-manding 21-17 and despite thelate fight-back by Warriors, or-chestrated by Nolan Govender,Randsonswent on to clinch the set(25-20).

Randsons were caught flat-footedatthestartof thesecondset,trailing 2-7 before taking an earlytimeout. But their woes continuedafter a series of atrocious, way-ward attacking coupledwith a netfault by new signing NashlinMoodley.

The Warriors trio, Daniels,Govender and Adyappa,matchedtheir more experienced oppo-nents point-for-point andwith thescores lockedat13-13, theatmos-phere was tense.

Adyappa took Warriors tomatch-point (14-13) with a defttouch that caught the Randsonsfront-line flat-footed before Jug-mohan blasted the ball way out ofthecourtstohandvictorytoWarri-ors (15-13) on a golden platter.

In the second semi-final, lead-ing contenders for the player-of-the tournament award, VinnieSinghandCyprinTulsiramguidedGrove End into the final with acomfortable straight-set victory(2-0) against Darnall United.

SIX KwaDukuza Athletic Club(KDAC) athletes will be makingtheir debut in the Bosveld 3-in-1race on Saturday, 11 April 11 inLouis Trichardt (Limpopo Prov-ince).

Leon Moodliar, Vijesh Maha-dew, Dippy Moodley, NishenChetty, Indran Naidoo and DannySewmungal have been trainingsincethebeginningof theyearandare enthusiastic about participat-ing in all three races.

The Bosveld 3-in-1, hosted bySoutpansberg Athletic Club, com-prises a 42.2km marathon, a21.1km half-marathon and a10km run-walk.

The Bosveld 42.2km is amoderate and scenic race alongthe Soutpansbergwith little trafficto trouble the runners.

The 42.2km race, which getsunder way at 6am, will start andfinish at the Soutpansberg club-house in Louis Trichardt.

The21.1kmhalf-marathonwillstart at 2pm with the 10km walk-

racescheduledtostartat6pm.Par-ticipants may run one, two or allthree races.

Category winners will receivegoldwinners.Thefirst30finisherswill receive silver medals and all

LEXUS’S fourth generation RX made its debut at the2015NewYorkauto show, sportinganewbody, rede-signed interior, longer wheelbase and the latest in

safety and technology from the automaker.The RX SUV, the best-selling model in Lexus’s 26-year

history, measures 4.8m long, 1.8mwide, 1.6 tall and has awheelbase of 2.7m. The range will be powered by 3.5-litreV6 petrol and V6 petrol-hybrid engines.

It’s expected to be launched in Europe towards the endof 2015. Details and specifications for South Africa will beannounced later.

At the front it hasnewaversionofLexus’ signature spin-dle-grille design, chromed trim and triple L-shaped LEDs.It has redesigned foglights and assertive flares to its frontwings. Geanballey walloped Ash-ley Harripersaad in straightsets (2-0) in a one-sided quar-ter-final contest, to secure asemi-final berth against NinePillay, who eliminated themore fancied VishalinParmasivan (2-0).

Geanballey, who has beenrelishing a purple patch ofbrilliant darts throughout the2015 season, continued hisrich vein of form on Wednes-day night, outclassing Pillay(2-0) to book his place in thefinal.

There were huge upsets inthe top half of the draws.Veteran darts campaignerPaddy Padayachee suffered ashock2-0defeat against JerryGovender.

The final between Gean-balley andArunachellamwasa real humdinger with both

players producing brilliantdarts. Geanballey was quickoff the starting blocks, bring-ing down the 501 tally to 401afternotchingupaton(100) inhis first three darts.

Geanballeyracedtothefin-ish line, needing 54 to closecompared to the 100 requiredby his opponent. Geanballeyneeded just twodarts to close,hitting 14 and closing with adouble 20 (40) to take a 1-0lead.

Arunachellam did notthrow in the towel and ralliedback gamely in the second setto stay in therace forhonours.

Geanballey quicklybroughtdownthetotal to94inthe hope of closing the gamewith three darts.

He notched up a triple 18(54) with his first dart andneeded a double 20, hisfavourite home, to close withthe two remaining darts. Hemissed the double narrowly,scoring 20 and was hoping toclosewithadouble10withhisthird dart, but missed thetarget.

Arunachellam seized theopportunity with both hands,and needed 52 to close withthree darts. He smashed a 20with his first dart and closedondouble16(32)withhisnextdart to level the scores at 1-1andpushthegameintoa thirdand decisive set.

Geanballeywasfiringonallcylinders in the final set, post-ingmammothscores toquick-lybringdownthe501-chaseto116.

Herecordedatriple20(60)in his first dart followed by a20, to leave himself a double

18(36)closeonthethirdflight.Geanballey,missedthetar-

get to offer his rival a lifeline.Arunachellam, who had a

mountain to climb, managedto bring his tally to 120 in hislast threedartsandwascross-inghisfingers,hopinghisrivalwill miss the double 18.

But Geanballey needed asingle dart to close on double18 to notch up yet anothermajor silverware of the 2015season.

President of KwaDukuzaDarts Association, Jerry Gov-ender congratulated all play-ers who participated in thepre-season singles tourna-ment andheapedpraise uponwinner Geanballey and run-ner-up Arunachellam, whoentertained the huge crowdwith some superb darts, andfinishing in the final.

KwaDukuza Darts Associ-ation is expected to move itsleaguematches to The Quartzin Stanger Manor in the hopeof attracting more teams andplayers before the league getsunder way at the end of themonth.

Also on the cards is a dou-blesleague,witheachteamal-lowed to nominate any twoplayers who will representthem each week. Each teamcan register a minimum ofthree teamswithno ceiling onthemaximumnumberofdou-bles teams.

The doubles league is ex-pected to give officials ofKwaDukuza Darts Associa-tion an opportunity ofmakingselection for the forthcomingnational darts championshipmuch easier.

TOURNAMENT favourites Rocky Park Unitedwere blown out of the Easter Knockout Cup(hosted by SAFA KwaDukuza Local FootballAssociation) after going down4-2 onpenaltiesto a 10-manCitizenAll Stars outfit in the semi-finalsplayedbeforeahugecrowdat theRecre-ation Ground on Easter Sunday.

The scene at the RecreationGround on Sat-urday was reminiscent of the heydays of the“beautiful game”when a bumper crowd gath-ered to catch theaction in thederbyquarter-fi-nalclashbetweenarch-rivalsRockyParkUnit-ed and Rocky Park Football Club.

TheyouthfulUnitedoutfit securedbraggingrightsaftersendingtheirmoreillustriousrivalsreeling out theEasterKOCup.After a tame1-1draw in regulation time, the derby game hadto be decided on penalties and United tri-umphed 4-2 to book their place in the semi’s.

The camaraderie between both teams wasevident onSundayafter theplayersand fansofRocky Rock Football Club came out in largenumbers to support United. Stars advanced tothesemisafter trouncingBeez3-1at theRecre-ation Ground on Saturday.

United dominated the game from the startand should have broken the deadlock as earlyasthe10thminuteafterRishalSinghbrokefreeon the left flank and hammered a thunderousshot which just floated over the crossbar.

Minutes later, twin Rishen Singh beat theoffside trap, but blasted the ball way over thecrossbar. In the 20th minute Simo Ntanzi re-ceived a brilliant through-ball and instead ofshootingfromcloserange,lostpossessionaftertrying to weave his way past the Stars centraldefender.

In the 25th minute Tyrell Goodwin latchedontoacrossfromRiazWilliamsandhammeredthe ball past the Stars keeper to give United adeservedly 1-0 lead. Stars goalkeeper NjabuloNgqondo remonstrated with the referee alleg-ing that Goodwin was offside.

The verbal tirade was too much for thereferee and he immediately reached for hispocket, flashing a red card to give Ngqondomarching orders. Ayanda Nene was handedthegoal-keepingglovesandtheUnitedfansex-pected the floodgates to open.

Early in the second half Nene made a bril-liantsavetodenyRishalSingh.Playingwith10-men Stars did extremely well to weather thestormandmidway into the second half caughttheir opponents on the counter-attack withThomazile Langa snatching a brilliantequaliser (1-1).

With 10minutes remaining the United ladslooked jaded and with no winner forthcomingin regulation time, the outcome of the matchwas decided on penalties. United were sentcrashing out the Easter KO Cup after goingdown 4-2 in the resultant penalty shoot-out.

Coach of the Stars outfit, Cyril Tumbu wasecstatic with the performance of his charges.Inthepost-matchinterviewTumbusaid:“Play-ing with 10 men and a makeshift goal-keeperwas no easy task and my boys have done wellto emerge winners and book their place in thefinal.”

HappyStarsbooked theirplace in the semisafter beating Sun City (10-9 on penalties) onSaturday at the Recreation Ground. They didbattle with Groutville United (who beat YoungLions 1-0) in the second semi-final on Sunday,but bowed out of the tournament after slump-ing to a disappointing 2-1 defeat.
