S T A N F O R D T R A V E L / S T U D Y

Since its beginning in the late 1960s, Stanford Travel/Study has had a pioneering spirit. We have taken alumni to remote and rarely visited destinations, and often before any other tourist groups have explored there. We continue to forge new trails, and many times we take the lead from you, our loyal travelers, who are continually seeking unparalleled learning experiences in wild places. Until recently, Russia’s White Sea region was closed to Western travelers and still holds the mystique of having been hidden behind the Iron Curtain. Few places in this picturesque and historic region have been explored by tourists, and much of the area has changed very little over the centuries. Led by Soviet Union expert, David Holloway, and guided by experienced naturalists and local experts, we will gain a vivid picture of this diverse part of Russia. We do hope you’ll join us!

We consider this program to be mildly active. Most of our touring is done by motorcoach and boat. Some excursions involve short walks. Travelers will have ample opportunity to take in the beautiful coastal scenery from the comfort of our ship. Russia’s tourism industry in this area is developing, thus patience with local service standards will greatly improve one’s enjoyment of the trip. You will need to climb, unaided, in and out of Zodiacs for excursions ashore. Many of the landings will be “wet” and will require that you wear waterproof, knee-high boots. In some instances, such as museums, guided tours require climbing up and down several flights of stairs. Stairs may not have handrails, and elevators are limited or unavailable. Participants must be physically fit, active and in good health. We welcome travelers 15 years of age and older on this program.

Deposit & Final paymentA $1,000-per-person deposit is required to hold space for this program. A $200-per-person deposit is required to hold space for the optional pre-trip extension. Complete and return the attached reservation form or sign up online. Final payment is due 120 days prior to departure. As a condition of participation, all confirmed participants are required to sign a Release of Liability.

cancellations & Refundsdeposits and any payments are refundable, less a $500-per-person cancellation fee, until 120 days prior to departure. After that date, refunds can be made only if the program is sold out and your place(s) can be resold, in which case a $1,000-per-person cancellation fee will apply. We recommend trip-cancellation insurance; applications will be sent to you.

insuranceStanford Travel/Study provides all travelers who are u.S. or Canadian citizens with minimal medical, accident and evacuation coverage under our group-travel insurance policy. our group policy is intended to provide minimal levels of protection while you are travel-ing on this program. We strongly recommend that you subscribe to optional baggage and trip-can-cellation insurance. A brochure offering such insurance will be mailed with your confirmation about one week after we receive your deposit. The product offered in this brochure includes special benefits if you postmark your insurance payment within a specified window: 15 days of the date listed on the confirmation letter for the Waiver of Pre-existing Conditions and coverage for Financial Insolvency; 21 days for the Cancel for Any Reason benefit.
