Assigned protection factor (APF) means the workplace level of respiratory protection that a respirator or class of respirators is expected to provide to employees when the employer implements a continuing, effective respiratory protection program

e.g - Assigned protection factor of 10 for a half face piece respirator

APF = Co / Ci

Co= Concentration Outside

Ci= Concentration Inside

10 = 50 / Ci (say concentration of dust is 50 mg/m3)

Ci = 5

Which means , after I put on the respirator, the concentration inside is 5 mg/m3

Compare the Ci to the TLV of the contaminant and decide respiratory protection
