Standards 5.c. 6.h.i.

Movement caused by the interaction of muscles and bones is known as the musculoskeletal system.

The musculoskeletal system is made up of the skeletal system and muscular system.

The skeletal system provides support, protection, and movement.

Other functions: ◦  Protects organs ◦  Stores minerals ◦  Makes red blood cells   Inside bone marrow

The major components of the skeletal system include bone, cartilage, and ligaments.

There are 206 bones in the human body.

  Bones provide support and protection.

  Ligaments connect bone to bone.

  Cartilage increases flexibility.

What is the job of the musculoskeletal system?

A.  To provide protection and support

B.  To provide movement

C.  To provide oxygen throughout and nutrients

What structure of the skeletal system is the most important?

A.  Bones

B.  Cartilage

C.  Ligaments

A joint is a place where two bones meet. This allows for movement.

At the joint the bones are held together by tendons.

The cartilage at these joints allows for more flexibility at the joints.

Hinge Joint: Bones move back and forth. ◦  Examples: knee & Elbow

Ball-and-Socket Joint: Bones can move in nearly every direction. ◦  Examples: Hip & Shoulder

Saddle Joint: The bones at both ends are shaped like saddles and allow for a wider range of motion. ◦  Example: Thumb

Pivot Joint: Only allows for bones to rotate ◦  Examples: Forearm &

top of neck

Gliding Joint: Bones can move from side to side or front to back. ◦  Example: Wrist bones

Immovable Joint: Allows very little or no movement ◦  Example: Skull

What kind of joint is shown?

A.  Gliding

B.  Hinge Joint

C.  Ball-and-socket

Why is an immovable joint even a joint if it can’t move?

A.  It is made up of one bone.

B.  Two or more bones meet there.

C.  There is a fracture in the bone.
