1 Channels of communication
This chapter describes the channels of communication via which the client’s suppliers may
exchange electronic messages directly with the interchange server operated for the client.
1.1 X.400
The X.400 protocol is an asynchronous data interchange protocol and is similar to the
internet SMTP (mail) protocol. The X.400 mailbox may be applied for from a provider. The
connection to the X.400 mailbox may be conducted via a dedicated line or via internet. For a
connection via internet, the data will be encrypted for security reasons. The protocol ensures
the secure interchange of data to the receiving mailbox and delivers an interchange protocol
to the sender.
The following communication profile must be available to both partners for the exchange of
electronic ERP data:

1.2 Odette-FDP/ISDN Connector
The Odette-FTP is a Point-to-Point transmission of files using an ISDN line. The protocol
was developed specially for the transmission of electronic ERP data. An encryption of the
data for security reasons is not necessary with a Point-to-Point interface. The partners are
identified by a distinct oFTP identifier. The protocol detects errors in transmission and
supplies the sender with a transmission protocol.
The following communication profile must be available to both partners for the exchange of
electronic ERP data:

2.2 Explanations of the examples and tables
2.2.1 Separators and elements not used
Data elements and groups are separated from each other by the use of separators. “+” and “-
“ are used as separators:
+ separates the data element groups (DEG)
: separates the data elements (DE) within the group
All elements are explained in tables. It may be that elements from the UN standard are not
used by abbino. These are marked in the tables under the column “Status abbino“ with an
“N”.
If UN standard elements follow the last relevant element and are not used by abbino – thus
becoming irrelevant – they will not receive any further description in the table.
