Overview Chartered Professional Accountants of Alberta (CPA Alberta) will formally recognize those members who have rendered exceptional service to the profession or whose achievements in their careers, the community, or in the profession have earned them distinction and brought honour to the profession, by the awarding of the title and designation Fellow of Chartered Professional Accountants of Alberta (FCPA).

The purpose of this guide is to assist individuals wishing to nominate a member of CPA Alberta for an FCPA. It outlines in detail each phase of the process and will serve as an essential reference. Following the steps in this guide will ensure a complete nomination that gives the nomination the best chance of success:

• Step 1: Review the admission criteria• Step 2: Submit a completed nomination form, signed by the nominator• Step 3: Submit a complete nomination package, following the instructions in each section and including

support materials

The nominator is responsible for ensuring that the package is complete and that the information it contains is accurate. The package should be detailed enough to allow the CPA Alberta Achievement Award Review Committee to fairly evaluate the nomination submitted. The decision of the Review Committee and the Board of Directors will primarily depend on the care taken to describe the nominee's achievements. You should therefore clearly indicate the businesses, organizations and committees in which the member has been involved, his or her publications, and accomplishments, as well as the relevant dates.

Criteria • A Chartered Professional Accountant who is in good standing, who, in the opinion of the Board, has rendered

meritorious service to the profession or whose career achievements or achievements in the community havebrought honour to the profession, may by resolution of two-thirds of the Board members be elected a Fellowof the Chartered Professional Accountants.

• There is no minimum requirement of years of membership before being eligible for nomination• The individual will have demonstrated exceptional leadership, performance and made remarkable

contributions in one, two, or all three of the following areas :o professional careero volunteer commitment to the accounting professiono volunteer contribution to the professional, community, or charitable organizations

• Members who reside outside the province of Alberta may be considered for an FCPA for the following reasons:o contributions relevant to the Alberta CPA profession or community, and/oro exceptional service to the Canadian or international CPA profession

• FCPAs are not granted posthumously• Member of CPA Alberta Award Nominations Committee, CPA Alberta Award Review Committee, and the CPA

Alberta Board of Directors are ineligible for receipt of any CPA Alberta Achievement Award during their termsof service, with the exception of the President-elect, who is eligible for an FCPA

• The date of granting is the date of the CPA Alberta Board of Directors’ meeting at which awards are adjudicated

Of note: • A Fellow of the Chartered Professional Accountants is entitled to receive a certificate in such form as the Board

determines and is entitled to hold the certificate so long as such Fellow remains a chartered professionalaccountant.

• When a Fellow of the Chartered Professional Accountants has been found guilty of unprofessional conduct, hasentered into a sanction agreement with the Complaints Inquiry Committee under section 74 of the Act, or hasentered into a settlement agreement with a chartered professional accountant organization or a predecessorto a chartered professional accountant organization in Canada, the Board will review the decision or agreementand determine whether to revoke the designation of Fellow of the Chartered Professional Accountants and, ifapplicable, designation of Fellow of the Chartered Accountants, Certified General Accountants, or CertifiedManagement Accountants, as may be applicable. If the designation is revoked, the individual will be so advisedwith the reasons.

• Where any designation of Fellow is revoked, the individual must return to the CPAA any certificate ofFellowship.

SECTION 6 – Supporting documents

This section should include letters of support attesting to the candidate's achievements. Please enclose the quality endorsement letters with the nomination file. The number of letters is unimportant. The letters of support should adequately highlight the candidate's leadership and the exceptional nature of the candidate's performance. Letters are not required for each aspect of the candidate's career presented; rather they should present evidence of specific aspects of the candidate's leadership ability and/or the exceptional nature of his/her performance.

Ideally, the letters would include the following:

1. A brief description of the organization, its work and role in the community.2. The details of the nominee’s involvement with the organization, including:

• The role of the nomineee.g., “John was the Chairman of the Book for Kid Fundraising Committee”

• Significant accomplishmentse.g., “John raised $1 million in 2012 for this endeavor”

• The actions or duties the nominee took to achieve the accomplishmente.g., “In addition to being the lead organizer of all fundraising events, John was a significant help

in recruiting other committee members, and sponsors.” • The time commitment, if applicable

e.g., “John contributed 20 hours a week to the Fundraising committee over five years.”• The impact of the nominee’s work on the organization

e.g.,”Due to John’s hands-on leadership style and long-term commitment, Books for Kids hasbecome the prominent donor of educational materials for inner city school libraries in Edmonton.”

Additional support materials: Any emails, media clippings or publications can also be submitted. These items can reflect the same details as above or

complement the factual information provided.
