One out of three women and one out of six men nationwide will experience some form of sexual violence in their lifetime. Domestic violence is even more common. According to the San Juan County Sheriff’s Department, domestic violence accounts for more than half of all the calls they receive*. (*More info at safesj.org/resources) Domestic violence and sexual assault have a long-lasting impact on survivors, family members, friends, and community members in the San Juan Islands. In addition to the human toll, these assaults are financially costly to our community: • Staff costs for law enforcement, prosecuting attorneys and public defenders. • Direct client and survivor advocacy services. • Counseling for survivors, family members, friends and community members. • Safe housing for survivors. Stand Up Men invite you to support SAFE San Juans against domestic violence and sexual assault in our community. SAFE is a non-profit agency serving San Juan County with a mission to prevent and eliminate domestic violence and sexual assault through direct client services, education and community awareness to foster cultural and social change. They receive federal, state, and local funding for administration, staff salary, and direct client services – but only 4.7% of those funds are able to go towards prevention and education efforts.
