The 25th edition of the Bahrain Heritage Festival

got underway yesterday. His Highness Shaikh Isa bin

Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, son of His Royal Highness the Crown Prince, inaugurated the annual Heritage Festival at Bahrain Fort. Organised by the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities (BACA), this year’s Heritage Festival titled “Springs’ Tales” focuses on the theme of Bahrain’s natural water springs.

HH Shaikh Isa expressed his pleasure in inaugurating the event, which marks its silver jubilee this year, on behalf of His Majesty King Hamad. His Highness praised His Majesty’s patronage and support for the festival, adding that it contributed to making the festival an important cultural and educational event within Bahrain and the GCC. His Highness noted that the festival celebrates Bahrain’s rich identity and heritage, which is unique within the history of the Gulf.

Shaikh Isa congratulated the President of BACA, Shaikha Mai bint Mohammed Al Khalifa, on the continued success of the festival, which receives a strong public turnout each year. His Highness praised the festival’s role in strengthening national pride and the Bahraini sense of identity, adding that the festival helps form links between younger generations and Bahrain’s cultural heritage.

His Highness went on to acknowledge that the festival’s theme, “Springs’ Tales”,

highlights the Kingdom’s longstanding relationship to its natural springs, which form a key element of Bahrain’s national and cultural identity. Shaikh Isa noted that the festival’s celebration of Bahrain’s historic lifestyle is reflected by the artistic work and folk crafts on display. During the event’s inauguration, he toured the festival, viewing various activities and the traditional souq.

Shaikha Mai expressed her gratitude to His Majesty’s continued commitment to supporting and showcasing

Bahrain’s cultural heritage, adding that His Majesty’s patronage of the festival demonstrates His Majesty’s vision and commitment to promoting Bahrain’s heritage and cultural infrastructure. Shaikha Mai further expressed gratitude to Shaikh Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa for his inauguration of the festival, on behalf of His Majesty the King. Shaikha Mai noted that the festival is celebrating its 25th anniversary and that the location of the event, Bahrain Fort, is listed under the UNESCO World Heritage list. Her Excellency further

noted that the title of this year’s festival, “Springs’ Tales”, reflects Bahrain’s natural water springs, which are a key element of the country’s history.

Shaikha Mai went on to add that Bahrain’s 1,000 year old history underpins a unique identity that all citizens should be proud of. Shaikha Mai expressed gratitude to the public and private sponsors of the festival, adding that the 25th Annual Heritage Festival takes place in line with BACA’s 2017 programme of activities, under the slogan, “Our year of archaeology”.

Donald Trump a d m i n i s t r a t i o n

is better in dealing with Gulf issues than Obama’s, Foreign Affairs Minister Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa has stated.

“US President Donald Trump understood the

region and the threats posed by their common

adversary Iran better than Barack Obama,” the minister

told Reuters in an interview on Tuesday.

“We are confident the new administration would

soon clarify its stances on foreign policy. We see a much clearer understanding from the White House of the threats we are facing here in the

region and especially the ones that are coming from the Islamic Republic. The last few years, there was a policy that we think it was better for them to correct, and we advised them it should be corrected,” Shaikh Khalid said.

Shaikh Khalid said the Kingdom welcomed a decision by the White House to approve a $5 billion sale of 19 Lockheed

Martin F-16 aircraft and related equipment which was held up last year.

“Trump’s style may have distracted some from the merits of his views, but all administrations had growing pains. They’ll get in order. Every new administration will always start in a way that will seem unclear, but clarity

is coming. Maybe when you see the difference in the personality of the president, maybe that’s kind of giving an overwhelming picture of the situation. Things are working in America,” Shaikh Khalid told Reuters.

Speaking on human rights violations claims in Bahrain raised by some international organisations, the foreign minister said, “We feel like we are being pressured and punished for no reason, just for sticking our neck out and address ing issues that e v e r y c o u n t r y has.”

Attempt to smuggle inliquor to Saudi foiledDT News NetworkManama

Saudi Customs officials have

foiled an attempt to smuggle in more than 800 cans of beer and around 80 bottles of liquor from Bahrain. The liquor bottles and cans were hidden in two cars proceeding from Bahrain through King Fahd Causeway to Saudi Arabia.

King Fahd Causeway Customs in Charge Sulaiman

Al Bulaiheed told Saudi media yesterday that the cans and bottles were confiscated from

two vehicles in two separate operations.

“ F o r t y - e i g h t bottles of liquor were detected in a vehicle hidden in its gas tank. Another 31 bottles and a total of 836 cans of beer were found in another vehicle which entered the Kingdom from Bahrain. They were stashed in special compartments in

the car’s bumpers and trunk,” Al Buaiheed stated.

This is the biggest bust of smuggled alcohol beverages from Bahrain this year. DT News reported earlier that more than 400 bottles, hidden in car tyres, were seized by the Saudi customs.

Vehicles crossing the causeway are only checked on one side to save travellers’ time. Cars coming from Saudi are inspected on the Bahraini side of the causeway and vice versa.

The Saudi and Bahraini authorities frequently announce attempts to smuggle in alcoholic beverages, drugs and sometimes humans. No details were available on the nationalities of the smugglers.

Fishermen get their freedom

Harpreet Kaur/DTNN [email protected]

Fifteen fishermen who were detained in Iran

last October finally got their freedom.

Ending months-long agony and suffering they all made it back to Bahrain on Monday via. Mina Salman Port.

They will be flying back to their home country today morning.

The fishermen from the Indian state of Tamil Nadu were detained by the Iranian authorities after allegedly straying into Iranian waters.

“We are thankful to the people who got out us out of this situation and took extra effort to see us unite with our

family,” said Vargees, one of the fishermen, to DT News.

“I would also like to request the media to help the others who are still stuck in Iran, as we are well aware of their hardships.” Reports say, 22 more men are there in Iran’s custody.

The Iranian authorities provided the fishermen little food and water even after their sponsor had paid the fines imposed on them by the Iranian court.

“We were all in miserable states,” Vargees said adding that they didn’t even given water or food on most days.

“We were confined to our boats and were beaten up even for the slightest hesitation.

“We weren’t even allowed to walk or move around,” Vargees said. “However, it’s the mental trauma that mattered us most. We pretended to be fine to keep our family from getting worried,” Vargees said revealing that were given only a few opportunities to speak with their families.

Jus t in Anthony, President of International Fishermen Development Trust (INFIDET) told DT News, “ I would like to thank the media and the Embassy of India in Bahrain for their constant support.”

“Most importantly these people are now going back to India to unite with their families,” he added.

Preparations underway to allocate 4,200 housing unitsDT News NetworkManama

Preparations are in full swing to distribute 4,200 housing

units allocated by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and First Deputy Premier, at various locations across the Kingdom. The Ministry is preparing the distribution timetable which will be announced soon.

Minister of Housing, Bassim Alhamer, has extended heart-felt thanks and gratitude to His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa for his unlimited support to the housing sector in the Kingdom, which, he said, has contributed to attaining many landmark achievements in this regard.

The minister also paid tributes to His Royal Highness Prime Minister Prince Khalifa

bin Salman Al Khalifa, and His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, for their incessant directives and close follow-up, which, he said, resulted in boosting housing projects and programmes.

Alhamer made the statements following the issuance of instructions by HRH the Crown Prince to distribute 4,200 housing units at various locations across the Kingdom, in line with

His Majesty King Hamad’s directives to provide modern and affordable housing nationwide. HRH the Crown Prince’s latest directives follow two previous orders which led to the successful allocation

of 3,000 and 3,200 homes, respectively, across different parts of Bahrain in 2016, contributed to reducing the names on the waiting lists in various governorates, he said.

The distribution of housing

units is within the framework of the keenness of the government to ensure decent housing for the citizens, as part of its efforts to provide the 25,000 units included in its action plan, he added.

Britain said yesterday it would help Saudi Arabia

to diversify its oil-dependent economy as British Prime Minister Theresa May visited the Gulf kingdom.

May and Saudi King Salman held talks focused on “bilateral relations and cooperation” as well as “regional and international developments”, the official news agency SPA said.

A statement from May’s office said the two discussed several issues including security and strengthening business ties.

An earlier statement from May’s office said she would discuss with “tax and privatisation standards to help Saudi Arabia diversify its economy and become less reliant on oil”.

The prime minister “pointed out that security relationships between the two counties had saved many lives in the UK”, her office said.

Saudi Arabia faces a significant budget deficit with billions of dollars in debts to private firms, largely in the construction business, after a drop in global oil prices by about half since 2014.

Britain will also assist Riyadh in “building a reformed

Ministry of Defence” and reviewing defence capabilities,

the premier’s office said.May’s visit came as she seeks

to secure investment and trade after Britain officially started a two-year countdown to leave the European Union.

The premier pitched the London bourse as a venue for the expected listing of oil giant Saudi Aramco, Bloomberg news cited an unnamed British official as saying.

May held a private meeting with Energy Minister Khaled al-Falih, who also heads Aramco, in the presence of London Stock Exchange Group Plc chief Xavier Rolet, the official said.  May’s office

said she and King Salman “discussed working together to address the humanitarian situation in Yemen”.

Saudi Arabia has bought more than $5 billion (4.7bn euros) worth of arms from the United States and Britain since the Yemen intervention, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute think-tank says. Kuwait signs new energy deal with EgyptKuwait City

Kuwait said yesterday it has signed a new a

multi-billion-dollar deal to supply Egypt with crude oil and petroleum products for the next three years.

Under the deal, Kuwait will supply Egypt with two million

barrels of crude per month and 1.5 million tonnes of petroleum products annually over three years, state-owned Kuwait Petroleum Corp. said in a statement.

It said the deal is worth over $4bn (3.75bn euros) based on current market prices.

The previous three-year deal, signed after Egypt’s military removed Islamist president Mohamed Morsi, expired in December.

Kuwait was among the Gulf countries that offered Egypt several billion dollars of aid following Morsi’s ouster in July 2013.

US may widen ban of carry on computers on planesWashington

The United States may soon expand its ban on air

passengers carrying computers on board on US-bound flights, Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly said Wednesday.

The threat of a terror group trying to blow up an aircraft mid-flight is constant, he told a Senate hearing on border security, suggesting that the current ban might not have gone far enough.

“It’s real, I think it’s getting realer,” he said of the threat. “ W e

may take measures in the not-too-distant future to expand the number of airports.”

Last month, Washington banned passengers on direct flights to the United States from 10 airports in eight countries from carrying on board laptop computers, tablets and other

electronic devices larger than cellphones.

The affected airports are in Turkey, North Africa and the

Middle East.Britain followed

with a similar ban applying to incoming

flights from six Middle East and North African

countries.The move, which forces passengers to put their d e v i c e s

into checked baggage, came as counter-terror officials developed concerns that jihadist groups were devising bombs disguised as batteries in consumer electronics.

A bomb that blew a hole in the fuselage of a Somalian airline in February 2016, killing one person, is believed to have been built into a laptop computer carried into the passenger cabin.

Dozens of terrorist cells discuss such attacks “on any given day,” Kelly said.

“You just watch them over time and see if they go from talking to actually doing something,” he said. “There is a real threat all of the time.”

“If we cannot get our arms around the current threat, you can expect additional protocol adjustments in the very near future,” he added of the computer restrictions.

Doctors Without Borders said yesterday that its team had

found victims showing symptoms consistent with toxins such as sarin gas after the attack in Syria.

The team saw victims at the Bab al-Hawa hospital, 100 kilometres

(62 miles) north of the attack on Tuesday, the charity said in a statement.“Eight patients showed symptoms –- including constricted pupils, muscle spasms and involuntary defecation -– which are consistent with exposure to a neurotoxic agent such as sarin

gas or similar compounds,” the statement said. The team also visited other hospitals where casualties were being treated “and reported that victims smelled of bleach, suggesting they had been exposed to chlorine”. Meanwhile, death toll in the attack rose to 86 yesterday.

Washington

US President Donald Trump warned that Bashar al-Assad’s

Syrian regime had crossed a line with its latest alleged chemical attack and faces a US response.

Trump described the strike as an “affront to humanity” and warned it had changed his view of the Russian-backed Syrian leader.

He also renewed his criticism of his predecessor Barack Obama who in 2013 famously failed to take action after Assad crossed a “red line” with a previous chemical

attack.“It crossed a lot of lines for

me,” Trump said, at a joint White House news conference with Jordan’s King Abdullah.

“When you kill innocent children, innocent babies, little babies ... that crosses many, many lines, beyond a red line, many, many lines,” he warned.

“I will tell you, it’s already happened, that my attitude towards Syria and Assad has changed very much ... You’re now talking about a whole different level.”

Cairo

Arab League chief Ahmed Aboul Gheit said

yesterday that a suspected chemical weapons attack on a rebel-held town in Syria that killed 72 people was “a major crime.”

“Targeting and killing civilians with these prohibited methods is considered a major crime and a barbaric act,” Aboul Gheit said.

“Whoever carried it out will not escape from justice,

and must be punished by the international community

according to international law and international

humanitarian law,” the Arab League chief said, without specifying who he held responsible.

The Arab League suspended

Syria’s membership at the end of 2011

following months of brutal repression of anti-

government demonstrations and an opposition movement supported by Gulf monarchies.

Russia set to continue military operation to back Assad’s forces

Vatican City

Pope Francis yesterday condemned the chemical weapons attack as an

“unacceptable massacre”.“We watch horrified as the latest events

in Syria unfold,” Francis said at his midweek public audience in St Peter’s square.

“I completely deplore the unacceptable massacre that took place in Idlib province yesterday, where dozens of defenceless people, including many children, were killed.”

Brussels

International donors yesterday pledged $6.0 billion in aid for

Syria this year at a conference overshadowed by the chemical attack.

The Brussels meeting, co-chaired by the European Union and United Nations, was a follow-up

to a meeting last year in London which raised $12 billion (10.1 billion euros) in all for humanitarian aid programmes.

“Our conference is sending a powerful message, we are not letting down the people of Syria,” EU Humanitarian Aid Commissioner Christos Stylianides told delegates.

Moscow

Russia on yesterday said it was pushing on with its support for

President Bashar al-Assad’s forces in Syria, after deflecting blame from Damascus over the suspected chemical attack.

“Russia and its armed forces are continuing the operation to support the anti-terrorist

operation to liberate the country, which the Syrian armed forces are conducting,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists.

Russia’s defence ministry said earlier that Syrian jets bombed a rebel depot in Khan Sheikhun housing “toxic substances” that were being put in bombs.

projects planned in the coming years across the region,” Al Rumaihi said pointing out that in Bahrain that figure is over $32 billion - of which real estate is an important component.

Warren Buffett becomes face of Coke in ChinaBeijing

The likeness of billionaire Warren Buffett is gracing

Cherry Coke cans in China, where the company’s largest investor enjoys a legendary reputation.

Coca-Cola announced over the weekend that a grinning cartoon portrait of the American business magnate would adorn cans and bottles of his favourite flavour after it was introduced in the country on March 10.

Berkshire Hathaway, Buffett’s investment firm, is Coca-Cola’s biggest shareholder with a 9.3 percent stake valued at about $17 billion.

“Incidentally, there is no

compensation involved,” Buffett told Yahoo Finance of the use of his image for “a limited promotional period.”

The 86-year-old investor and philanthropist has been photographed on numerous occasions taking a swig of Cherry Coke, earning him the title of “best-known fan” from Coca-Cola chief executive Muhtar Kent.

In Communist-ruled China, where Chairman Mao portraits are as ubiquitous as brand-name logos, Buffett’s business acumen has made him a celebrity and inspired thousands of Chinese investors to reportedly flock to Omaha, Nebraska, for Berkshire Hathaway’s

annual meeting last year. While the meeting was

livestreamed around the world, simultaneous translation was only offered in Mandarin.

Buffett has in turn lauded China’s “totally miraculous” growth.

As for his enduring appreciation of Cherry Coke -- he invested in Coca-Cola as early as 1985 -- Buffett admitted in his shareholders’ letter last February that he consumes enough Coke and candy “to satisfy the weekly caloric needs of an NFL lineman.”

“There’s nothing like eating carrots and broccoli when you’re really hungry,” he added, “and want to stay that way.”

Have an Opt-Out OptionYou have to let people know how they can stop receiving your messages. In most cases, you can just put directions in your mes-sage. Something like “text STOP to opt-out” works great. It’s also very impor-tant that you monitor and analyze all of your results so you make sure you’re sending the most relevant information to a relevant audience.

Timing Is EverythingNo one wants to receive a coupon after they’ve already made a purchase. Consider writing the message in advance then send-ing it later. You don’t want to overload consumers with messages so they get annoyed and start to ignore/delete them upon receipt. Most businesses that use SMS marketing only send one text per week. (Searchenginejournal)

Be Clear and BriefAny message that is over 160 characters will be broken up by the phone company into multiple texts, and this could cause a variety of problems including making the entire message undeliver-able and incurring extra fees for the business owner. Make sure you include a call to action so readers know what is expected of them and what steps they need to take next. It’s an art coming up with an engaging message and a CTA all in 160 characters, but it’s at least better than Twitter, right? A phone number or URL are great examples of effective CTAs. Avoid slang and above all, be creative. You’re not the only business using SMS marketing so you want to make sure your texts stand out against the competition.

Right ContactsSMS would not be successful if you didn’t have anyone to receive your messages. Law states that you can only send text messages to those who have opted to receive them. The best thing you can do is give your customers the choice to receive your messages by ask-ing them during a subscription pro-cess online or ask-ing them to text a certain term to your company number.

SMS marketing has the potential to greatly grow your business if done correctly. Below lists several things you need to keep in mind when you set out to create an SMS campaign:

Offer Variety

You should never send someone the same

text message twice. Make sure you’re always chang-

ing up your message and keeping things

interesting.

Watch Your Database

Mobile phone numbers get changed and deleted all the time, so it’s impor-

tant you check regularly to make sure you’re sending

your messages to the right people.

manufacturer Recaro Aircraft Seating to supply Recaro CL3710 economy class aircraft seats for the airline’s 10 new Boeing 787-9 aircraft and 29 Airbus 320/321neo aircraft.

The contract, which is valued at over 35 million euros, was signed at this year’s Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg.

Gulf Air’s first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner and Airbus 320neo deliveries are scheduled for 2018 and the airline’s A321neo aircraft delivery will start in 2020. “Recaro’s economy class seats fit perfectly into our new cabin concept, guaranteeing a pleasant travel experience for our passengers and standardising our product across our short and long-haul fleet,” said Maher Salman Al Musallam, Gulf Air Chief Executive Officer.

Dubai

Stock markets in the Middle East firmed yesterday with

Abu Dhabi outperforming its peers for a second day as institutional investors targeted blue chips, while crude oil near a one month high boosted Saudi Arabia.

Abu Dhabi’s index climbed 2.0 per cent on the back of a 4.1pc jump in shares of newly merged lender First Abu Dhabi Bank. It has now soared by 10.7pc since

Sunday, when the National Bank of Abu Dhabi and First Gulf Bank tie up became official in very high volumes.

Farid Samji, head of asset management at Dubai-based Daman Investment, attributed the exceptionally high volumes to the inflow from the change of weighting in the emerging market indexes, including the MSCI Emerging Market index and the FTSE secondary emerging market index.

“But that alone does not explain the spike in turnover, the other factor is that people are taking a positive view on the stock because of the synergies post the merger and those who sold ahead of the combination are now returning to buy,” Samji said.

In neighbouring Dubai, the index rose 0.4pc, it sixth consecutive session of gains, as most blue chips outperformed their smaller peers. Emaar Properties climbed 0.9pc, but a 4.5pc slump in Emirates Integrated T e l e c o m m u n i c a t i o n restrained gains as its shares went ex-dividend on Wednesday.

In Saudi Arabia, all but one of the 13 listed petrochemical producers rose, helping lift the index 0.9pc higher.

Shares of electronics retailer United Electronics the first company to report first quarter results, jumped 7.4pc after the company

swung to a net profit of 12.9 million riyals ($3.44m), compared to a loss of 45.9m riyals in the prior year period.

The company estimated total sales for the first quarter to have increased 8.3pc to 805m riyals compared to the same period last year.

Egypt’s index closed 0.2pc higher at 13,290 points, but 117 points off its intra-day

high. The only share on that index that closed higher was Commercial International Bank, which added 0.9pc.

Most other shares wiped out gains from earlier in the day. Investment firm EFG Hermes closed down 1.5 percent to 25.59 Egyptian pounds($1.42), after hitting a session high of 26.45 pounds. (Reuters)

Pierce Brosnan on Tuesday told Jimmy

Kimmel that he has not been approached to play Cable in the Deadpool sequel, despite rumours that began when he took some silly pictures with star Ryan Reynolds and Wolverine actor Hugh Jackman.

“Not true. Nothing has come my way yet,” Brosnan said. “It’s completely made up.”

The James Bond actor explained the story behind the photos. “We were sitting, waiting for a plane, the three of us, and the guys said, ‘Quick, let’s get a photograph,’” he explained. “Mr.

Reynolds said, ‘Let’s do three wise monkeys,’ and we put it out there and it went viral.”

Brosnan promised Kimmel he was not lying about the casting.

Michael Shannon has emerged as the frontrunner for the role of Cable, The Hollywood Reporter first learned in late March.

Shannon, who if he got the role would be crossing over from Marvel (Superman) to DC just like Reynolds did (Green Lantern), is not the only one on the studio’s list. Stranger Things actor David Harbour is also on the

shortlist. However, Shannon is in the prime spot. Kyle Chandler’s name was tossed around

last summer, but sources say he was never in contention for the role. (hollywoodreporter.com)

The prospect of a sibling can shake any child’s world. So,

idea, or even name, wise, The Boss Baby seems completely appropriate. However, this DreamWorks animation isn’t content to leave it at that, stretching and stretching till a good enough premise is spread so thin that the stitches begin to show.

Alec Baldwin, the stand-up of the moment, is the Boss Baby, throwing around lines like fired, hired, promoted, and upper-rung and middle-rung management. He is one of the employees of

Baby Corp, whose goal is to ensure that babies remain central to the universe. Employees such as him are fed on a formula that forever keeps them a baby, and all they aspire for is a corner office and private parties. He is brought home by the unsuspecting parents of Tim (voiced by Miles Bakshi) who, like parents of all newborn, put up with all he does, including wearing a suit and tie and carrying around a briefcase.

Tim is suspicious, but his doubts are brushed away as sibling rivalry.

McGrath swings between trying to keep the humour very, very basic — including bare butts and baby farts — and trying to elevate it to something more. He gets a few laughs here and there, particularly when Tim and the Boss Baby are left to themselves, but towards the middle, there are just two many things being juggled around. That includes the hunt for a mysterious new puppy, since Baby Corp feels threatened that humans are replacing their love for babies with that for the four-legged creatures.(ie entertainment)

Oslo

Norway yesterday unveiled plans to build

the world’s first sea tunnel to pass through a mountain, avoiding dangerous waters that intimidated even the Vikings.

Built to bypass the Stad peninsula, a storm-swept area in western Norway, the Stad ship tunnel will be 1.7 kilometres (one mile) long and 36 meters wide, making journeys safer.

“The Stad tunnel for boats will finally be built,” said Norwegian Transport Minister Ketil Solvik-Olsen, presenting a comprehensive transport plan for the period 2018-2029.

“The government is now ensuring a safer and more reliable passage of the most dangerous and harsh waters for the transport of goods along the Norwegian coasts,” he said in a statement.

Panama on Tuesday seized a helicopter belonging to

a wealthy former president, Ricardo Martinelli, whose family is under suspicion of accepting bribes from a Brazilian construction group.

Prosecutors said in a statement they had taken “provisional possession” of the Airbus aircraft, registration N16261,

after it was confiscated by authorities in Mexico.

Although the prosecutors’ statement did not name Martinelli as the owner, the former leader and his lawyers confirmed ownership.

Martinelli, who went to live in self-exile in the United States after his 2009-2014 term, said on Twitter he was preparing a lawsuit for “helicopter theft.”

Mexico City

In a bid to save the world’s smallest species

of porpoise from extinction, the Mexican government announced plans Tuesday to place some of them in a temporary refuge.

The environment ministry said the “ambitious emergency plan” to save the vaquita marina porpoise would be carried out with help from international conservation groups.

However, the plan is controversial with

conservationists, who say the vaquita is not an animal that can thrive in captivity.

Scientists warned earlier that there are only 30 vaquita remaining, and the species faced extinction by 2022.

The porpoise is native to the Gulf of California, where illegal fishing nets are threatening to wipe it out.

Under the Mexican plan, some animals will be transferred to a refuge, where they will be able to reproduce without the risk of being caught in gillnets.

Manila

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte faced

criticism yesterday for defending adultery by a powerful political ally.

Duterte had said that like himself, House of Representatives Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez -- who has made public his extramarital affairs -- had “many wives”.

“This is a world of hypocrisy. Who among you here does not have a mistress?” the president said in a speech aired live on television on Tuesday night, adding it was “a non-issue”.

The comments drew sharp rebukes in the conservative and mainly Catholic nation that remains the last holdout against divorce -- apart from the Vatican itself.

“All of it is sexist and

misogynistic to explain improper behaviour simply by virtue of being male,” Senator Risa Hontiveros said.

“It sends a message that undermines the many struggles and gains so far for women’s rights and gender equality.”

Alvarez, the country’s fourth-highest official, is an old friend and political ally of Duterte.

The politician made headlines in the past week when he publicly admitted having sired eight children, six of them with two women other than his wife.

Duterte, in the televised speech to government employees in Manila, admitted his comments defending Alvarez’s affairs were “a chauvinist statement”.

“But really there are so many women and you (have) so short a time in this world. My God!” he said in comments that drew laughter from the crowd.

“The thing there is that you’re able to support the children. That’s it.”

Duterte said that unlike married Christian Filipinos who are allowed a single wife, Alvarez “never converted to Christianity. So he is not bound by the rules of the number of women that you can have.”

“Who isn’t entitled to happiness? Ask these lawmakers, how many of them have two, three or four mistresses? Ask them,” Duterte said on Sunday in his first public comments on the Alvarez controversy. (AFP)

Donald Trump’s daughter Ivanka, an unpaid White

House adviser to the American president, says she has her father’s ear and can disagree with him with “total candor.”

In an interview Ivanka Trump said she will continue the advocacy work she was doing in the private sector, which includes pushing for the economic empowerment of women and on issues involving education.

“I’m still my father’s daughter,” she said. “But I’ll weigh in with my father on the issues I feel strongly about.”

In late March, the White House announced that the

35-year-old First Daughter would be working in the White House along with her husband Jared Kushner, an unpaid senior adviser to the president. Neither has any

experience in elected office or public policy.

The president’s daughter urged critics “not to conflate lack of public denouncement with silence.

Boxing legend George Foreman says Britain’s Anthony Joshua is his favourite to win this

month’s clash of the heavyweight giants against Wladimir Klitschko.

“If I were a gambler, I’d see Joshua as a 6-5 favourite. So I’d put him just in front,” the 68-year-old Foreman told German magazine Sport Bild.

Londoner Joshua will fight Hamburg-based Klitschko at Wembley Stadium on April 29 with the WBA ‘Super’, IBF, and IBO world heavyweight titles on the line.

Joshua, 27, the 2012 London Olympic champion, has won all of his 18 professional bouts so far, but Foreman, a former two-time world heavyweight champion, says Klitschko provides his ‘first real test’.

Leipzig trim Bayern lead

Berlin

Naby Keita’s superb solo goal settled second-placed

RB Leipzig’s frantic 3-2 win at 10-man Mainz yesterday to trim Bayern Munich’s lead to 10 points in the Bundesliga.

After runaway leaders Bayern had their 20-match unbeaten run ended by a 1-0 defeat at Hoffenheim on Tuesday, RB were made to work for the win at Mainz to narrow the gap.

Striker Timo Werner, who made his Germany debut in last month’s friendly win against England, and midfielder Marcel Sabitzer scored for Leipzig early in the second half.

Sweden’s Emil Forsberg assisted both goals including a deft backheel from a cross from which Sabitzer gave RB the lead on 48 minutes.

Werner then added Leipzig’s second, his 15th league goal this season, four minutes later when he got on the end of a Forsberg cross to leave the visitors in control at 2-0 up.

But Mainz sprang into life with 30 minutes to go as their Spanish midfielder Jairo converted a penalty on 69 minutes.

Mainz’s Levin Oztunali had the ball in the RB net again seconds later, but the effort was ruled offside.

Keita, who scored twice on his return at the weekend after suffering a circulatory collapse, then dribbled through the Mainz team and slotted home on 81 minutes.

However, in a frantic finish, Mainz had Jean-Philippe Gbamin sent off for a foul on Rani Khedira, brother of

Germany star Sami, on 89 minutes.

Japan’s Yoshinori Muto then headed Mainz’s second goal in the dying stages, but Leipzig held on.

The win keeps RB on course for a Champions League place next season, but Mainz are just above the relegation places.

This was Mainz’s fourth straight defeat to increase the pressure on coach Martin Schmidt.

Hertha Berlin’s Champions League ambitions suffered another set-back as they crashed to a third straight defeat in losing 1-0 at Borussia Moenchengladbach.

Gladbach’s 19-year-old defensive midfielder Laszlo Benes gave the hosts an early lead and Thorgan Hazard hit the post in the second half in

the hosts’ deserved win.Hertha are now sixth, 10

points from the Champions League places with seven games left, while Gladbach are ninth.

Bayer Leverkusen pulled away from the relegation mire to go 10th with a 2-0 win over bottom side Darmstadt thanks to goals by Germany pair Julian Brandt and Kevin Volland.

Wolfsburg, the 2009 champions, are now just a point from the relegation places after their 1-0 defeat to Freiburg thanks to striker Florian Niederlechner’s second-half winner.

Ingolstadt, 17th in the table, boosted their survival chances with a 3-2 win at Augsburg to leave them just four points from safety as midfielder Almog Cohen scored twice.

Madrid

Lionel Messi scored twice on his return from suspension as Barcelona piled the pressure

on Real Madrid yesterday by moving top of La Liga with a 3-0 win over Sevilla.

Messi was banned for his last two outings for club and country but looked rested rather than rusty as he took his tally for the season to 43 goals in 41 games.

The Argentine also played his part in setting up Luis Suarez’s stunning overhead kick to open the scoring.

Barca lead Real by a point, but Zinedine Zidane’s men have two games in hand, starting at Leganes later Wednesday.

Madrid, though, will have to do without Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale after they were rested by Zidane.

Defeat continues Sevilla’s slump and a sixth straight game without a win sees them remain three points behind Atletico Madrid in the battle for third place.

A visit to the Camp Nou offered Sevilla boss Jorge Sampaoli a final chance to make his case for the Barca job at the end of the season.

Sampaoli was one of the leading candidates when Luis Enrique announced his decision to step down at the end of the season last month.

However, Sampaoli was left to rue another night of missed chances as a three-goal blitz in eight first-half minutes secured the three points for the hosts before half time.

Messi fired an early warning as he blasted a shot off the underside of the bar from outside the area after just three minutes.

Sevilla had two glorious chances to open the scoring as Steven N’Zonzi fired too close to Marc-Andre ter Stegen when clean through before Vitolo headed over when unmarked inside the area.

Suarez made no such mistake as he caught Messi’s deflected cross flush with an overhead kick to break the deadlock with his 31st goal of the season.

Barca’s star front three were all involved for their second on the counter-attack as Suarez turned Neymar’s cross back into Messi’s path to slot low past Sergio Rico.

Messi doubled his tally for the night six minutes later when he volleyed home a loose ball inside the Sevilla area.

The five-time World Player of the Year then passed up a huge chance for his hat-trick just after the break when he didn’t get enough loft on an attempted chip to beat Rico.

Sevilla had a series of chances to at least claim a consolation as Pablo Sarabia twice tested Ter Stegen with fierce efforts.

Barca could afford the luxury of replacing Suarez, Gerard Pique and Ivan Rakitic in the final half hour to keep them fresh for a huge month with both legs of their Champions League quarter-final against Juventus and a trip to Real Madrid to come in the next 18 days.

Sevilla’s misery was complete when Spanish international Vitolo was sent off in stoppage time for a second yellow card after chopping down Neymar. (AFP)

Kohli, Misbah, Younis get Wisden honoursLondon

In d i a c a p t a i n

Virat Kohli has been named as

the Leading Cricketer in the World in the 2017

edition of the respected Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack, -- ‘cricket’s bible’ -- published this week.

Meanwhile Pakistan’s Misbah-ul-Haq and Younis Khan were named as two of Wisden’s Five Cricketers of the Year.

According to editor Lawrence Booth, Kohli had “the year of his dreams” in 2016, “averaging more with the bat in each of the three formats than anyone: 75 in Tests, 92 in one-day internationals and 106 in Twenty20 internationals”. Under Kohli, India won series trophies in all three formats against England in 2016/17.

Booth said the star batsman’s 235 in the fourth Test against England at Mumbai confirmed him as the “spiritual successor to Sachin Tendulkar”.

Kohli is the third Indian to win an award that has only been in existence since 2003 and is designed to recognise achievement in all forms of the international game in the previous calendar year. Dynamic

opener Virender Sehwag won twice, in 2008 and 2009, with Tendulkar himself awarded the title in 2010.  The 2017 women’s award was won by Australia’s Ellyse Perry.

While the Leading Cricketer of the Year award is a relatively new concept by the standards of Wisden -- a British-based publication which has appeared every year since 1864, with not even the First and Second World

Wars halting its print run -- the Five Cricketers of the Year is a tradition that dates back 128 years.

Veteran batsmen Misbah and Younis were both honoured in the context of their performances during Pakistan’s 2-2 Test series draw in England -- a result that saw Pakistan, under Misbah’s captaincy, briefly rise to number one in the world Test rankings.

England all-rounder Chris Woakes was also one of Wisden’s Five Cricketers of the Year.

Middlesex’s Toby Roland-Jones, whose hat-trick against Yorkshire at Lord’s sealed the County Championship title for the London club, and Northamptonshire batsman Ben Duckett, who scored 2,706 runs in all formats during a prolific season, completed the quintet.

De la Cruz attacked towards the end of the fifth and final climb of the day, 15 kilometres from the end of the 160.5km ride from Vitoria to San Sebastian.

And he just had enough to hold off former world champion Michal Kwiatkowski and Australia’s Jay McCarthy in second and third respectively by three seconds in a

winning time of 3hrs 54mins 25secs.

“When I saw I was alone at the front I thought it was an ambitious move because there was still a long way to go to the finish line,” said De la Cruz.

“But I tried my luck and it came off.”

De la Cruz leads from McCarthy and Kwiatkowski in the overall standings by three seconds.

Pre-race favourites Alejandro Valverde and Alberto Contador are also three seconds back overall as

Valverde was fourth on the day with Contador a lowly 33rd.

De la Cruz will be confident of defending his lead in today’s 174.1km fourth stage from San Sebastian to Bilbao before Friday’s

queen stage with two category one climbs from Bilbao to Eibar.

“This is a very tough tour with a lot of high-quality riders, but it is true we are in a good position,” added De la Cruz.

Philippine world boxing champion Manny

Pacquiao is to fight undefeated Jeff Horn on his home turf in Australia, the Filipino star’s camp said yesterday.

The announcement of the July bout ends months of speculation on who the

38-year-old Filipino dubbed “Pac-Man” would face next as he seeks to prolong a stellar career that saw him win world titles in eight different weight classes.

“We signed the Jeff Horn contract this morning. Fight is July 2 in Brisbane, Australia,” Pacquiao’s adviser Michael

Koncz said by text message.Koncz said Pacquiao would

be staking his World Boxing Organization welterweight crown against Horn, 29. He declined to say what the prize money would be.

Pacquiao’s American promoter Bob Arum had been originally pushing for

the Filipino to face Horn in Australia but in a surprise development, Pacquiao and British boxer Amir Khan announced separately in February that they would fight on April 23.

But the deal spectacularly fell through with Arum describing the reported $38 million United Arab Emirates fight to the Los Angeles Times as “pie in the sky”.

After Horn, Koncz said he was still hoping to set up a Pacquiao fight with Khan in either the Middle East or the Philippines in October or November. Pacquiao, who has been hailed as a virtual national hero in his home country, briefly retired early last year and then ran and won a seat in the Philippine senate.
