July 1 marked the day your Colorado Buffaloes are officially members of the Pac-12 Conference. The 2010-11 sports seasons were a whirlwind of change, memorable victories, historic records set and an NCAA National Championship. It was also a year of tremendous strides in the Buff Club annual fund. Congratulations on being a part of helping increase membership over the last year, and we still have four months left in the calendar year to grow. One thing is for sure, if you are reading this letter, we could not have done it without YOU – renewing your membership, encouraging others to join or being a new member.

I would like to congratulate and recognize Emma Coburn for her first NCAA 3,000-meter steeplechase national title at the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. It has been a great year for Emma, who is one of 10 NCAA female athletes on the Bowerman Watch List, the top athletic honor in the track and field world. She represents our program with a competitive spirit and distinction that we strive to produce in all of our student-athletes.

In this issue of The Stampede you will meet our dedicated Buff Club staff. The Buff Club is the athletics development unit that is in charge of all private fundraising for Colorado Athletics under the direction of the CU Foundation. We are very proud of our partnership with the CU Foundation and the vital role our collective teams play in building a program of which we can be proud. This dedicated staff coordinates all fundraising initiatives for scholarships, capital projects and academic services, and are responsible for strong relationships to connect those with a passion for Colorado Athletics to their areas of interest. Please, never hesitate to contact any member of our development team to assist you with tickets, parking or any related issue.

The “Year in Pictures” issue is an annual favorite for us all, and is full of our valued CU student-athletes in action. We find photographs of athletes as inspirational as their talent and competitive passion leaps from each page. I trust you will enjoy this wonderful collection of photos from the 201-11 school year.

As always, thank you for being a loyal Buff Club member and playing an integral role in making so many special events and memories possible. Our institution boasts a bright future because of your commitment to stand Shoulder to Shoulder in support of the Colorado Buffaloes in the Pac-12!

Compliance CornerGreetings fellow Buffs. My name is Jill Gainey and I’d like to introduce myself as the new Associate Director of Compliance for Rules Education. I come to CU from Michigan State University, where I served as the Assistant Compliance Coordinator for almost four years. I look forward to working with the Buff Nation. Please do not hesitate to contact myself or the compliance office with any questions.

CU is responsible for its boosters and their actions. Our athletics compliance office is responsible for educating boosters in order to ensure compliance with NCAA, conference and institutional regulations.

For this month’s issue of The Stampede, I’ve selected some key compliance terms and defined them to help you better understand NCAA Rules:

Representative of Athletics Interest – Also known as a booster. CU fans, friends, alumni and employees are categorized as boosters. Specifically, the NCAA has determined that a booster is an individual or business that:• Is or ever has been a contributor to the CU Athletic Department• Has ever made a donation of any kind to a specific sport program• Is or has been a member of an organization promoting CU’s athletics program (e.g., booster club)• Has ever made a donation to the Buff Club• Is a former student-athlete at CU Boulder• Is an employee, or the spouse of an employee, of the University of Colorado• Has ever purchased season tickets for any of CU’s athletic programs• Have otherwise promoted CU’s athletics programs in any manner

Prospective Student-Athletes – Also known as a PSA/recruit. PSAs are ANY students who have started classes for the ninth grade, regardless of athletics participation. Student-athletes enrolled in preparatory school and junior colleges are also considered PSAs.

Recruiting – Any solicitation of a PSA or their relatives by an institutional staff member for the purpose of securing the PSA’s enrollment and ultimate participation in the institution’s athletics program. Only CU coaches are permitted to recruit PSAs. Boosters may not have any recruiting contact with PSAs.

Extra Benefit – Any gift or special arrangement by a CU employee or booster provided to a PSA or current student-athlete or their relatives or friends that is not expressly permitted by the NCAA. Some examples of extra benefits include:• A special discount, payment arrangement or credit on any purchase or service• Gifts of cash, clothing or any other tangible item• Loan of money or co-signing of a loan• An automobile, use of an automobile, or any trans- portation expenses• Free or reduced-cost services, purchases or rentals• Employment or loan arrangements for a PSA’s or current student-athlete’s friends or relatives• Free or reduced rent or housing• Payment to a student-athlete for a speaking engagement

If you don’t know this already, the Buff Club team is your go-to place for all things Colorado athletics. In the following pages, you are going to meet the Buff Club staff, which is comprised of seven fundraisers, two special events directors, a stewardship director, a c-club assistant director and three administrative assistants. You can find their offices in Gates 8 and 10 at Folsom Field, where year round they help Buff Club members make donations to Colorado athletics, navigate the season ticket process and get more involved with the 16 NCAA sports at Colorado. The Buff Club also features a former CU football player, a former CU track and field star who now runs professionally for Nike, a former professional football player for the Atlanta Falcons, and seven Colorado grads. You will also learn that they have a wealth of athletic development and administration experience with staff members previously working at Cal, UCLA, Kansas and Kansas State. Years of Experience at Colorado: Four.

Professional Background: Executive Director of the Williams Educational Fund and Assistant Athletic Director University of Kansas (15 years); Executive Director of the K-Club (Former Letterwinners); member of NACDA and NAADD; member of the National Collegiate Football Hall of Fame Board of Directors; Big 12 Development Council.

Alma Mater: University of Kansas. BS in Business/Education, 1977

Scott’s Day to Day: “Daily interaction with our donors, coaches and university partners. Creating positive relationships and finding ways to move CU athletics forward. Develop and manage both individual and corporate foundation prospects that have major gift potential. Oversee our endowment program for athletics, including prospecting, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship. Manage and supervise four direct reports on the development staff.”

What’s most rewarding about your job? “It’s two-fold: Getting rejuvenated at the start of every new school year and the excitement surrounding all of our sports programs, while providing opportunities for our student-athletes to compete at the highest level and to receive a top-quality education. Connecting people in a positive way with our sports programs is incredibly rewarding.”

Why are you excited about Colorado’s move to the Pac-12? “The opportunity to engage our alumni base on the west coast and the Pac-12 footprint with CU athletics. Joining the Pac-12 is a great fit for the University of Colorado both athletically and academically.”

What’s your favorite Colorado sports moment? “Our victory over West Virginia in football before a sold-out crowd on national TV. Great exposure for CU athletics and the University of Colorado as a whole.”

Tell us an interesting fact we don’t know about you? “I was the Sports Illustrated national ‘Back of the Week’ after the victory over Texas A&M 1974.”

Professional Background: Kansas State University: Senior Associate Athletic Director/External Relations (2008-2010), Associate Athletic Director/External Relations (2005-08), Assistant Athletic Director (2002-2005), Assistant Director of Development (2000-02); University of Idaho: Assistant Athletic Director (1999-2000)

Kurt’s Day to Day: “I’m raising funds for the Buff Club, endowments and capital projects. Assigned regions include the states of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Hawaii. I oversee the annual giving program.”

What do you find most rewarding about your work? “Building relationships with people – seeing them excited about supporting our student-athletes and coaches. Watching our student-athletes come in as freshmen and leaving with a degree in one hand and hopefully a championship ring on the other.”

Why are you excited about Colorado’s move to the Pac-12? “The opportunities for us to take our university – in so many ways – to new regions, and the ability to reach more of our alumni base. It is great to see how many people are on board with this move.”

What’s your favorite Colorado sports moment? “Beating Kansas State three times in basketball last year and in football.”

Years of Experience at Colorado: Three.

Professional Background: Product Marketing Manager for the Oklahoma Lottery 2005-2008

Alma Mater: University of Colorado, 2003

Natalie’s Day to Day: “I handle the marketing, communication, social media and fundraising efforts for the Buff Club annual fund. I enjoy sending a letter, email or Facebook post that inspires people to give back.”

What do you find most rewarding about your work? “I like that I get to be around a program that has been such an important tradition in my family. I love connecting with people who live the tradition and who are unconditional Buffs.”

Why are you excited about Colorado’s move to the Pac-12? “The Pac-12 under Larry Scott’s leadership is a phenomenal conference. Scott understands marketing and branding and his efforts will benefit every school in the conference. The Pac-12 will elevate Colorado to new levels of competition and academics.”

What’s your favorite Colorado sports moment? “Every football game I have watched with my dad are some of my favorite Colorado sports moments. My dad and I have been watching the Buffaloes play football since I was a little girl.”

Tell us an interesting fact we don’t know about you? “I’m a Colorado native.”

Professional Background: Worked in advertising on accounts such as Kohl’s, GM and Taco Bell prior to moving into college athletics. Worked at the University of California, Berkeley in the same role as Director of Stewardship.

Katie’s Day to Day: “Ensuring people feel good or acknowledged for their gift to the Buff Club. To help them realize that they are making a difference in the lives of our student-athletes.”

What do you find most rewarding about your work? “Seeing the energy in Folsom Field or Coors Event Center during a sell-out crowd. I also happen to have some great co-workers who I enjoy spending time with.”

Why are you excited about Colorado’s move to the Pac-12? “Being a California native, I became accustomed to following the Pac-10. I came to appreciate what an exceptional conference it is. It truly is a conference of champions, both academically and athletically, and I’m excited for Colorado, my alma mater, to be affiliated with such elite educational and athletically superb schools. Not to mention, road trips are much more desirable in the Pac-12 than in the Big 12!”

What’s your favorite Colorado sports moment? “The 62-36 victory over Nebraska and this past year’s men’s basketball comeback victory against Texas (down by 22 at halftime and came back to win).”

Tell us an interesting fact we don’t know about you? “My family has P.O. Box 1 in my hometown.”

Michael’s Day to Day: “I work with donors and Colorado athletics supporters to increase funding to enhance programs, scholarships and facilities for the continued success of Colorado athletics and student-athletes in all sports. Regional development areas include Southern California and Northern Colorado.”

What do you find most rewarding about your work? “Forging meaningful and lasting relationships with season ticket holders, donors and our world-class student-athletes, and knowing that I’ve made an impact in the lives of our student-athletes. Winning! Nothing beats the feeling of walking out of the building at the end of the day with a win.”

Why are you excited about Colorado’s move to the Pac-12? “It will provide many opportunities for Colorado alums and friends on the West Coast to engage with the Buffs on multiple levels. We belong in the ‘conference of champions.’ The tradition that the conference offers is amazing.”

What’s your favorite Colorado sports moment? “The men’s basketball upset over Texas in 2011.”

Tell us an interesting fact we don’t know about you? “I backpacked through China, Thailand and Malaysia for eight weeks after graduating college.”

RONSCOTTExecutive Director for the Alumni C Club

Years of Experience at Colorado: 21st year as an employee, returning in 2010 after a nine-year absence.

Professional Background: Worked in heavy highway construction equipment sales for 12 years out of college. Has had two separate entrepreneurial careers – one in hotel ownership and a home construction and development business called the Bison Corp. The balance of professional career has been with the Colorado Foundation and Athletics.

Alma Mater: University of Colorado, Business, 1968

Ron’s Day to Day: “I oversee the activities and management of the Alumni C Club – Colorado’s Letterwinners Organization. I also work with friends and alumni to build their involvement in Colorado athletics as donors.”

What do you find most rewarding about your work? “I have been blessed to have the opportunity to work for a place for which I care a great deal. Colorado is a way of life for my wife, Ann, and I. Ann is also a graduate and employee of the Colorado Foundation. Our family, friends, and just about everything we do, have some connection to the university. I was afforded the opportunity to attend Colorado on an athletic scholarship a very long time ago. Since my graduation, I have been forever grateful – not only for the education, but the bond I formed with teammates, fraternity brothers, classmates and colleagues. The relationships I have been able to form with so many individuals who have that same Colorado passion are very special to me. You did not have to attend Colorado to feel it is a very special place!”

Why are you excited about Colorado’s move to the Pac-12? “I’m excited about all of the excitement – the more I work with friends and alums in Colorado and the Pac-12 states, the more I realize what this will mean for Colorado. At my age, I am a bit of a traditionalist. I loved the Big 8, didn’t like the Big 12, but there is no comparison to the potential that is in front of us with our new conference – athletically and academically. I project our fan base will grow exponentially. What needs to happen is our financial support needs to do the same.”

What’s your favorite Colorado sports moment? “I can’t list just one – 1990 national championship, victories in Seattle ‘89, in Lincoln ’67 and ’90, and the 20-10 victory over the Huskers in ’86. The NIT run this year ranks pretty high, as well.”

Tell us an interesting fact we don’t know about you? “Four former student-athletes and I purchased and managed the Hotel Boulderado in the late ’70s. I became general manager late in 1979, and we sold the property in June 1980. We all are proud of our little role in the great history of this national landmark.

What do you find most rewarding about your work? “I love working with the athlete alumni and keeping their connection to Colorado with the various events the C Club plans. The most rewarding part of my job is putting on reunions, awards and events where I get to see how much fun alumni are having and how much support and pride they have in being a Colorado Buff!”

Why are you excited about Colorado’s move to the Pac-12? “I think it is a great fit for Colorado. There are so many alumni in these areas it will be fun to travel for each sport and have alumni support in each city. The tailgates should be fun!”

What’s your favorite Colorado sports moment? “Being a part of a national championship team – twice; we did it in cross country my freshman and my senior year (2000, 2005).”

Tell us an interesting fact we don’t know about you? “My husband, Steve Slattery, a Colorado track alum, and I love to ride his Harley (I have a pink helmet). Each year, we take a trip in the fall on the Sportster. In 2005, we went to Sturgis, S.D. It was one of the prettiest rides on which I have ever been.

Years of Experience at Colorado: Nineteen years.

Professional Background: Executive Director for Trebol Soccer Club in Boulder County the last four years. Trebol is one of 65 soccer clubs that provide youth soccer to more than 50,000 kids in Colorado. The club created opportunities for hundreds of youth, who otherwise would not have been able to play competitive soccer.

Alma Mater: University of Colorado

Scott’s Day to Day: “Overseeing the sales of suites, club seats and frontline fundraising for Colorado Athletics.”

What do you find most rewarding about your work? “Developing relationships that perpetuate the pride and tradition of the Colorado Athletics family.”

Why are you excited about Colorado’s move to the Pac-12? “I am excited for the opportunity to create new rivalries in all sports, and the first New Year’s Day when Colorado plays in its first Rose Bowl.”

What’s your favorite Colorado sports moment? “The surreal silence of 100,000 fans in the Big House after Kordell Stewart completed the ‘Miracle at Michigan’ pass to Michael Westbrook (with an assist from Blake Anderson).”

Tell us an interesting fact we don’t know about you? “My wife, Jennifer, and I were married on the day Sal Aunese passed away. We spent our honeymoon in Seattle/Vancouver to be at the Colorado/Washington game two weeks later.”

Years of Experience at Colorado: First.

Professional Background: Worked as a project manager for TicketsWest for two years, and also worked seasonally for the Rockies for seven seasons.

Alma Mater: University of Colorado, Geology, 2008

Kaitlyn’s Day to Day: “My day to day activities include various administrative duties such as merging letters, maintaining correspondence lists, answering the Buff Club main line and Buff Club emails, running donor reports as needed, and processing incoming gifts.”

What do you find most rewarding about your work? “I love being a part of two very great entities – Colorado athletics and the Colorado Foundation. All of the people I work with on both sides, as well as within the Buff Club, are amazing people who are inspiring in their work efforts and always add to an enjoyable work day. Plus, we have the most amazing fans who, when they call in or email, always share the most incredible stories of their ever-loyal support of the Buffs. At the end of the day, if I can help someone make a difference for Colorado athletics – whether it is in their job or in a donation – then it was a great day.”

Why are you excited about Colorado’s move to the Pac-12? “I’m excited to see new traditions formed and new experiences gained from seeing new sights within the newly-formed Pac-12 Conference. As we expand our horizons to the west and southwest, I think we can learn a lot athletically, academically and personally from our fellow Pac-12 schools.”

What’s your favorite Colorado sports moment? “It would have to be when we beat Oregon in the 1998 Aloha Bowl. I was there and it was an incredible time. It was also one of the first football games I can remember despite having attended dozens before that.”

Tell us an interesting fact we don’t know about you? “I was born a Buff. Both of my parents worked in the Colorado ticket office when I was born and for many years after. So I grew up running around Gate 5 and the Coors Event Center and Dal Ward and many other places around campus, with my brother tagging along on most adventures.”

Gina’s Day to Day: “Assisting the Buff Club annual fund with processing donations and mailing solicitations.”

What do you find most rewarding about your work? “I like the location of the office at Folsom Field with the Flatirons as a backdrop; it’s beautiful! I enjoy the variety of duties and the interesting people I work with.”

Why are you excited about Colorado’s move to the Pac-12? “I’m very excited to be competing in a new league.”

What’s your favorite Colorado sports moment? “The winning ones.”

Tell us an interesting fact we don’t know about you? “It is top secret.”

Professional Background: College Football Association, where I worked as an administrative assistant for Mike Bohn

Dawn’s Day to Day: “Support major gifts team, assist annual gift development team, gift processing, accounting, running reports and general administrative duties.”

What’s most rewarding about your job? “I love watching our student-athletes mature from the first day as freshmen until graduation day.”

Why are you excited about Colorado’s move to the Pac-12? The energy and excitement we get back from our loyal donors and the new friends (donors) that will join the Buff Club.”

What’s your favorite Colorado sports moment? “Every win is exciting.”

What do you find most rewarding about your work? “I love being involved with Colorado athletics on an everyday basis. I went to school here and was born in Boulder, so to be working here is very special. I also love the people I work with. I’ve gotten to know both my colleagues as well as all the great Buff fans over the years of working here.”

Why are you excited about Colorado’s move to the Pac-12? “I am excited for our teams to travel where we have a much larger fan base and to see great Buffs crowds at all of our away games.”

What’s your favorite Colorado sports moment? “The 2001 Colorado-Nebraska football game. I was a freshman at Colorado and remember it being the most fun I have ever had at a sporting event. I ran home after the game so I could buy tickets to the Big 12 Championship Game in Dallas.”

What’s your favorite Colorado sports moment? “I have two favorite moments. The first was the CU-Michigan game in 1994; it was one of the most exciting college football games I have ever seen. The Hail Mary at the end of the game was one of the most iconic plays in the history of college football. The second was the 1990 national championship reunion last year for the CU-Georgia game. It was a great opportunity to meet some of the best football players in the history of the University of Colorado and the win against Georgia topped the weekend off nicely.”

Tell us an interesting fact we don’t know about you? “I lettered 11 times in four sports during high school.”

When the CU Buffaloes kick off their season opener in Honolulu on Sept. 3, linebackers coach Brian Cabral will be walking the sidelines in his home state. Fellow Polynesian Ken Nuimatalolo, head coach at Navy, describes Cabral as an “icon in the island” saying, “He is not only one of the best coaches in the country, but he has done a lot for student-athletes on the West Coast and in the Hawaiian Islands.”

Cabral is one of the founding members of the Polynesian Coaches Association (PCA), which “has committed its efforts to increasing the enrollment of Pacific Islanders in colleges and universities across the country. Cabral has served as a mentor to many of the upcoming young Polynesian coaches in college and high school levels,” says PCA President Alema Te’o.

Why these comments about Coach Cabral? At this May’s 81st Annual Alumni Association Awards Ceremony, Cabral received a Robert L. Stearns Award in recognition for his extraordinary service to the University of Colorado, especially through his work with students. As the only member of the football department to ever be so honored, he certainly knows the importance of education for all student-athletes. His players do not play if they aren’t performing in the classroom. When someone is looking for Cabral, the frequent response is, “He’s out on campus making sure his players are in class.”

As daughters of fathers hired by President Robert L. Stearns, co-award nominator Mary

Ward Metzger and I know the significant impact that faculty and staff have on students. No doubt the Cabral home saw students return to share their success stories and seek guidance in their chosen fields as they did in ours. Cabral had career opportunities to move elsewhere, as did they, and chose to remain a Colorado Buffalo. Over the last two decades, he has played a huge part in keeping the CU football program going, twice serving as interim head coach.

When asked about his coaching plans for the 2011 season, Cabral commented, “This is going to be way too much fun. I wouldn’t miss it.” He is the only coach retained in the same position from the previous staff by Jon Embree. Cabral’s passion for the University of Colorado and commitment to assist five head coaches speak volumes about his influence both on and off the field.

During his 22-year tenure at CU, Cabral has annually mentored an average of eight to 10 student-athletes, thus impacting the lives of nearly 200 young men. As a student-athlete himself playing in 46 games from 1974-78, he is one of six known individuals to participate in an official capacity in over 300 Colorado football games.

Cabral has coached in 14 bowl games, winning eight. Add to that record three Big Eight Conference titles, four Big 12 North Division titles and four Big 12 Championship Games with one title win. In 1990, CU won the national championship.

Known as one of the top linebacker coaches in America, Cabral had his own successful NFL career, complete with a 1985 Super Bowl XX championship ring. A number of his standout athletes have furthered their playing careers with NFL teams. These players include: Matt Russell (1996 Butkus Award winner, Detroit Lions player, Denver Broncos director of scouting), Alfred Williams (1990 Butkus Award winner, 1996 All-Pro and Pro-Bowl selection, two-time Super Bowl winner with the Denver Broncos, 2010 College Football Hall of Fame inductee), All-Big Eight performers Greg Biekert (Oakland Raiders assistant coach, played 11 seasons with the Oakland Raiders and Minnesota Vikings), Ted Johnson (10 year career, three-time Super Bowl champion with the New England Patriots), and Chad Brown (15 year career with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots). Gifts to the University of Colorado take many forms, from brick and mortar or named buildings, to student scholarships, faculty support either as fellowships, designated chairs or for specific programs. Holding season tickets for various sports with an additional athletic scholarship donation is another means of support. Cabral’s gift has taken the form of teaching and coaching decades of student-athletes.

University of Colorado athletics, meet the new boss: Larry Scott.

Scott, commissioner of the Pac-10 now Pac-12, could be excused for taking a deep breath and savoring his accomplishments over the past year. He successfully negotiated the addition of Colorado and the University of Utah to the conference and, of even more importance to the member schools, Scott also oversaw the negotiations that led to the Pac-12’s lucrative television deal with ESPN and Fox, which will reap a reported $21 million per school per year (beginning in the 2012-13 season) and is paving the way for the league to begin its own television network.

Yet, Scott did not achieve such success by resting on his laurels. Scott already is looking ahead, and recently he sat down with The Stampede to discuss CU’s move into its new western digs.

What are the biggest ramifications of adding the Denver market to the Pac-12?That was a really important consideration. It was important to me that if we expand, that it add value to the existing 10 members of the conference. Part of that is adding media markets. That is particularly important in regards to the television network and having the state of Colorado, and the Denver market specifically, as part of our core footprint. That’s an essential component. Additionally, by adding Colorado and Utah, it allowed us to get to 12 teams, which was essential to be able to have a football championship game. That was a big piece of our ESPN/Fox deal.

How intriguing was it to tap into the vast market of CU alums living in California?It was an important component in terms of reinforcing the good fit. You heard the leadership of the university talk about how there is a very extensive network of alumni within the Pac-10 footprint. Much more so than within the Big 12. I think that was an important indicator for Colorado and the conference in that natural affinity Colorado has with the West Coast and the western states. And it certainly suggests that the level of fan support and attendance around events when Colorado is playing in the Pac-12 will be much more enthusiastic. That’s why I think the impact for Colorado, in terms of their alumni and their affinity and their connection to the school both through athletics and more broadly, will be much more robust.

How do you believe CU’s smaller (non-revenue) sports will fit in with the conference?When I think of CU, I think there is a shared philosophy of a broad-based commitment

in excellence across Olympic sports. In our conference, people don’t think of our schools as a “football school” or a “basketball school.” Our schools tend to have storied histories of excellent success in Olympic sports. As we sit here today, just this week with USC winning the NCAA men’s tennis championship, that was the 399th NCAA championship for the Pac-10. The Big 10, the next highest, has 205. By the time this article appears, I suspect we will have the incredible milestone of 400 NCAA victories in one conference. We’ve got two schools, UCLA and Stanford, that are the only two schools in the country that have more than 100 NCAA team victories as a school. USC is the third with 93, and that’s not counting football. If you count football, they’re over 100. It is very much part of the DNA of this conference – excellence and success in Olympic sports in addition to being a premier conference in football and basketball.

That is part of the unique definition and personality of this conference. When we think about CU, we think about a real commitment in coaching and facilities and philosophy to excellence in Olympic sports.

There has been media speculation that the new television deal will allow CU to add sports. Has this move been encouraged by the conference?It is a complex analysis with significant financial decisions. Obviously, that is a decision the university will have to make, but I certainly have offered my encouragement.

Do you believe the forthcoming Utah-Colorado football rivalry will find its place on a conference rivalry weekend that includes longstanding intrastate showdowns and college classics like UCLA-USC and Cal-Stanford?

Obviously, rivalries are something that get built over time. They have to be natural and they have to be authentic. I think we realize that. Having said that, we do hold out hope that the Utah-Colorado game will develop a special significance. Not just because theycame into the conference at the same time, or that they are geographically (close). But when you think about our conference, there are these natural in-state, or in-market, rivalries up and down the conference. You have thetwo biggest schools in Washington, the two biggest schools in Oregon, the two biggest schools in Arizona, and the two biggest schools in Southern California and the two biggest schools in Northern California. The hope is that the two biggest, most prominent schools in the Rocky Mountains will become natural rivals over time. There is a certain symmetry to it.

If you blinked more than a few times in the past 12 months, you surely missed something at the University of Colorado. And that’s no joke. Perhaps unlike any other single year in the history of CU athletics, the past 356 days were wild, crazy, uplifting, sometimes bizarre and – without a doubt – unforgettable.

And what better way to tell the story of “the year that was” than through a collection of photographs? There was the trip to the Garden, the hiring of a great Golden Buffalo and there was the wildly celebrated move to the Pac-12.

And there was this – CU’s 24th national title. Hauling in the NCAA skiing championship trophy seemed to be an appropriate way to enter the Conference of Champions.

The Climb toThe Pac-12 represents a bigger Buff Nation By Natalie Pigliacampo

Over the last year I have heard every reason why the move to the Pac-12 conference is great. Of all the reasons—likeness of schools and culture, television revenues, better away games— reason number one for me is that everywhere the Buffaloes go in the Pac-12, there will be Buffs - and a lot of them. I know having a packed visitors’ section matters a lot to our coaches, players and fans. The Buff Club recently hosted a Pac-12 tour in May. We took Coach Embree, Coach Boyle and Coach Lappe to Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Phoenix. I had the pleasure of meeting up with the tour in Phoenix and nervously drove three busy coaches and two Buff Club staffers from event to event through Scottsdale and Phoenix. Coaches are a unique breed. Their job is to win, to be the best, to cultivate student-athletes into precision performers and students. “No excuses” is what comes to mind when I think about a Division I coach. Despite this common vision of a coach, which all of our coaches embody in their own way, Jon, Tad and Linda were fantastic outside of their coaching worlds with fans, donors and soon to be donors. At the event we held in Scottsdale, each coach spoke about their program and the audience was captive. At one point near the end of Coach Embree’s talk, a table of young Buffs spontaneously erupted in the fight song and soon the whole room was shouting “shoulder to shoulder!” at the top of their lungs. It was thrilling to witness people from all different walks of life connecting, shoulder to shoulder, through a mutual love of the Buffs and the University of Colorado. At each stop of the Pac-12 tour we announced our ambitious goal to double Buff Club membership to 10,000 by the 2014 school year. By the end of the tour, we signed up 71 new Buff Club members. Our goal will only be accomplished with the collective effort of every member, fan and alum to make a gift of any size year after year, and to get other Buffs they know to sign up, too. No excuses. Colorado Athletics have adopted the slogan “Shoulder to Shoulder” as its campaign message to increase funding to athletics as wells as attendance and season tickets for our sports. If Buffs stand shoulder to shoulder in Arizona, Utah, California, Oregon, Washington and Colorado, 10,000 by 2014 is possible. GO BUFFS!
